Report on Operations Human Resources Human Resources embarked on a number of initiatives to improve and increase the effectiveness of its function. These include: A quick glance at the quantity of items used this year. ■ 14000 aluminium meals on wheels containers. ■ Our patients have breakfasted on 9792 weet bix . ■ Development of a general orientation program, including a comprehensive checklist to provide new staff with a smooth transition when joining the Health Service. ■ ■ Washed them down with 3744 litres of fruit juice. 60,000 latex gloves have been used. ■ Ongoing monitoring and updating of employee Performance Appraisal function. ■ 3,400 Adaptic dressings have been used. ■ ■ ■ Development and implementation of ‘Request from a Third Party for Information’ policy. Implementation of ‘Consent to Provide Information to a Third Party’ form. Development and implementation of an exit interview process, including an exit questionnaire. ■ Investigation into pay point progression of RN Division 2 Nurses and implementation of a monitoring system to enable pay point assessment Futher activities are focusing on workforce strategies, which will encompass the ageing workforce and the retention of staff. Stores The year has seen the full establishment and utilisation of the State Government’s Health Purchasing Victoria (HPV) ordering system. The new system is designed to save money for public hospitals by using the combined purchasing power of the State’s health services to provide incentive for suppliers to reduce tender prices on main stream items and pass savings onto the consumer. Other improvements that have occurred in the supply department include: ■ Testing of a walk behind pallet shifter to assist with the unloading of heavy items to prevent injuries to staff through manually handling. ■ A number of accreditations have come and gone again this year and the supply department has received excellent feed back from the people who have inspected the stores area. Occupational Health and Safety The Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) committee meet monthly throughout the year and continue to work towards ensuring a safe work environment for all staff. The Committee commissioned an OH&S audit by an external auditor in January 2006. The purpose of the audit was to ensure Yarram and District Health Service was meeting its requirements under the revised Act and the Service achieved a 74% compliance rating. An action plan has since been developed and all priority one tasks were completed by June 2006. Membership of the OH&S committee was reviewed and expanded to include all the designated workgroups and OH&S committee members were surveyed to ascertain their thoughts on the structure and frequency of meetings. The exercise resulted in consensus on the frequency of meetings and enhanced participation in the committee. From early 2006, all OH&S minutes and agenda’s were made available online under “OH&S Information for Staff”. The Committee was involved in the “Manual Handling in Hospitals Project”, conducted by Worksafe. No notices were issued to Yarram and District Health Service. The Committee investigated 20 hazard reports, revised the Emergency Management Manuals. It also liaised with Yarram’s Emergency Services, for example, SES, CFA and the Police, providing a tour of the health service and copies of Emergency Manuals so that staff residents, visitors and patients will be protected in case of an emergency. Deanmac Emergency Management Consultants provided Fire Equipment and Emergency Management Training to staff at Yarram and District Health Service.
