Chapter 1. Outline of Japan Agency <strong>for</strong> Marine- Earth Science and Technology 1. Activities (1) Objective The objective of the Independent Administrative Institution, Japan Agency <strong>for</strong> Marine-Earth Science and Technology (hereinafter referred to as "JAMSTEC") is to contribute to the development of academic ocean research as well as to elevate the level of ocean science and technology through comprehensive activities such as fundamental ocean research and development, and cooperative academic ocean research according to the philosophy of contribution to peace and welfare (Article 4, Law concerning the Independent Administrative Institution, Japan Agency <strong>for</strong> Marine-Earth Science and Technology [hereinafter referred to as the "Law"]) (2) Scope of activities (Article 17, Section 1, No. 1 to 7 of the Law) 1) To conduct fundamental ocean research and development. 2) To make the achievements of the above activity wellknown and promote their utilization. 3) To cooperate with universities and inter-university research institutes in academic ocean research through operation of vessels, etc. 4) To make the facilities and equipment of JAMSTEC available <strong>for</strong> use by those who conduct research and development or academic research in science and technology. 5) To train researchers and engineers in ocean science and technology and enhance their qualifications. 6) To collect, organize, store and provide internal and external in<strong>for</strong>mation and materials on ocean science and technology. 2. June 1990 The system of SHINKAI 6500 was completed. March 1995 KAIKO succeeded in the world's deepest dive in the Mariana Trench. October 1995 Mutsu Office was opened. September 2000 Washington Office was opened.
