10. International collaboration Ocean observation and research on a global scale is required to deal with the issues of global-scale environmental variations including climatic change. To elucidate these issues and promote ocean observation and research more effectively and efficiently, JAMSTEC is striving to promote joint international projects, and to maintain and establish good cooperative relationships with United Photo 3 GODAC receives its 60,000th visitor (cumulative total). JAMSTEC is also a member of POGO (Partnership for Observation of the Global Oceans), a forum of major oceanographic research institutions around the world. Upon the request, JAMSTEC sends researchers to other oceanographic international organizations to contribute to their Photo 4 "Seaside Classroom" (beachcombing and handicrafts classroom). (3) Cooperation under the Intergovernmental Cooperative Agreement JAMSTEC conducts cooperative research based on the Intergovernmental Cooperative Agreement concluded among the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy, India, Australia, Canada, South Korea, China, Germany, France, Russia, the EU and Japan. (5) Others In May 2007, Prince Andrew, Duke of York of England's Royal Family visited JAMSTEC, where he toured the Earth Simulator at the Yokohama Institute for Earth Sciences (YES) and spoke informally with English researchers. After moving to the Yokosuka Headquarters, Prince Andrew viewed the deepsea cruising vessel Urashima and the manned research submersible Shinkai 6500. In November, President Riger Wolfrum of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea visited JAMSTEC and exchanged views on "Treatment of Marine Genetic Resources in International Waters" under the enforcement of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and viewed JAMSTEC's facilities, centering on the Extremobiosphere Research Center. Also in November, the 4th Annual Meeting of the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) and a Cabinet Summit were held in Cape Town, Republic of South Africa. A Japanese delegation of 25 persons attended, headed by Kisaburo Tokai, Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. Two representatives from JAMSTEC (Institute of Observational Research for Global Change: IORGC) attended the GEO meeting. An exhibition was also presented on the construction of the Hydrometeorological Array for Isv-Monsoon Automonitoring (HARIMAU; under the MEXT Global Earth Observation System of Systems: GEOSS), which is being carried out by JAMSTEC. In February 2008, Dr. Patricio Bernal, Executive-Secretary of the IOC visited the Yokosuka Headquarters and toured the facilities.
