5 Global Oceanographic Data Center 1 Outline of Activities The Global Oceanographic Data Center (GODAC) was established for the purposes of promoting the development of human resources in multimedia fields and attracting information and communications-related companies and creating employment in the northern part of Okinawa Prefecture, which are being promoted by Nago City, Okinawa Prefecture. Since FY 2007, the infrastructure system for the Biological Information System for Marine Life (BISMaL) has also been created (Photo 1). As results of digital archiving work for FY 2007, the Center encoded 1,907 deep-sea videos taken by the manned research submersible Shinkai 6500 and others, and created 28,971 shots as indexing work, inputting various types of information as image data divided into shots. Up to the end of March 2008, approximately 14,000 shots of deep-sea images were available at the GODAC website (Earth's Environment Portal Site). publications, including the JAMSTEC Newsletter "Natsushima," "Mirai" cruise reports, and others. In addition to these, the Center has digitalized and makes available 730 graphic-type items, such as cruise tracks, the prize-winning entries in the 10th National Children's Picture Contest "Ocean Dream Picture Postcard," etc. GODAC also performed database-related work such as support for the construction of a rock database, support for the construction of a press release materials database, etc., and manages and operates GODAC websites, including the Earth's Environment Portal Site, the Coral Reef Network web system, and others. In particular, the Coral Reef Network web system was renovated in March 2008, and began distributing not only photographs of coral reefs, but also moving pictures photographed by the underwater compact TV camera robot (ROV) owned by GODAC (Photo 2). GODAC websites have been accessed approximately 1.43 million times. 3 Increasing Understanding of Marine Science and Technology (Public Relations) To increase understanding of marine science and technology and for popularization/education of residents of the region, GODAC opens its facilities and equipment, including the Conference Room in the users' Public Area and user terminals (personal computers) and allows local children to use these facilities. The Center also employs various types of contents, such as videos, poster panels, and models, to explain marine science and technology and global environment change, centering on the research achievements of JAMSTEC. In November, the exhibition in the Public Area was renewed, and a Planning Corner was created. Four special exhibits were presented, "Special Exhibit Commemorating the 1000th Voyage of the Shinkai 6500," "Dangerous Sea Life," "Frontline of Earthquake Observation," and "What is a Coral Reef?" The number of visitors in FY 2007 totaled 13,768, which was an all-time high, and on September 26, the cumulative total of visitors reached 60,000 persons (Photo 3). As popularization/educational activities for the general public, the Center held 5 seminars on marine science and technology (May 12, May 31, July 22, December 1, and January 15). For children, the Center also held three "Seaside Classrooms," combining beachcombing and handicrafts. Other activities included experience in maneuvering the compact underwater TV camera robot owned by GODAC (Photo 4). On May 12, GODAC held a general open house of its facilities, and received 156 visitors. The marine science and technology school "Coral Reefs of the Beautiful Sea and Global Environmental Change" sponsored by the GODAC Public Relations Division over a 3-day period (March 10-12) was the first event of its kind in Okinawa, and used GODAC and Nago City's North Lifelong Learning Center as its sites. Among other activities, GODAC also cooperated in exhibitions at various events in Okinawa. The main events are listed below (Photo 5). Nago Cherry Festival (sponsored by the Nago City Tourist Association), exhibition booth, video recording (January 26- 27). Girl Scout Kyushu Camp (sponsored by the Kyushu District of the Girl Scouts of Japan), experience maneuvering ROV and beachcombing and handicrafts classroom (March 26). In its work experience training and internship program, GODAC received a total of 41 students from 13 schools, centering on elementary, middle, and high schools and universities in northern Kyushu.
