s o n g b o o k
The church is forever creating new sounds and new songs!
New composers are developing a new repertoire in a fresh
contemporary style, and GIA is proud to contribute to
this creative energy and effort with the publication of
Cross Generation.
We gathered a committee of distinguished pastoral
musicians who combed the popular resources available
today and chose the very best songs currently in use in
contemporary worship settings.
But Cross Generation is more than just a collection of
terrific music: it is a truly effective tool to assist worshipers
and seekers alike in the ongoing process of catechesis.
This songbook includes great music by established
writers like Tony Alonso, John Angotti, Steve Angrisano,
John L. Bell, Tom Booth, Ed Bolduc, Rory Cooney, David
Haas, Marty Haugen, Paul Tate, Lori True, and more.
In addition, there is a broad range of exciting new songs
from budding composers like Shannon Cernenka, Chris
de Silva, Orin Johnson, Michael Mahler, and Paul Melley.
“Heritage” music—classic examples of chant, hymnody,
world music, and early American folk tunes—will broaden
and deepen our insight into faith and history.
And the brilliance of Cross Generation comes through the
succinct yet meaningful explanations and quotes placed
throughout the book, connecting the music to the liturgical
seasons, our sacraments and rites, and our venerable
past.
Add in the signature GIA indexes and cross-references,
the convenient supplemental editions, the affordable
price, and the eye-catching design—and the result is a
truly groundbreaking contemporary music resource.
We Walk His Way: Shorter Songs for Worship
John L. Bell
We Walk His Way is the third in a series of shorter songs for worship from John
New! L. Bell and the Iona Community. The songs included in this collection are from
many different cultural traditions, including Taiwanese, South African, Asian,
and Guatemalan. Iona’s previous collections, Come All You People and There Is One among
Us, have proved to be useful in English-speaking countries, and several of the songs have been
translated into other European languages. The global scope and versatility of these simple songs
for worship can link us to the greater universal church.

The short and memorable melodies on this CD are very sensitive and soulful, and many have
a sincere and solemn tone. They bear continual repetition for meditation or as an accompaniment
to liturgical action. Many of the selections are a cappella or include very simple accompaniments
and instrumentation. They are easily taught, and the texts contain a wealth of spiritual, scriptural,
and theological meaning.
Give Me Jesus
Singing, Praying, and Celebrating Our Life In Christ
David Haas
A compilation of David’s most heartfelt songs about the many facets of Jesus Christ,
New! savior, teacher, healer, victim, redeemer…and our complicated and often challenging
relationship with the Man-God. Give Me Jesus presents a musical journey that invites us
to sing, pray, and celebrate our lives in Christ. It also calls us to realize our role in salvation history; how we
internalize the lessons of faith, hope, and love, and then use them in our daily lives.
The two-CD set includes 44 songs categorized into different aspects of our relationship with Christ. The
planned accompanying prayer book will provide reflections for breaking open the mystery of Christ Jesus.
Used together the Give Me Jesus CD set and prayer book can provide an opportunity for spiritual growth
and conversion. The accompanying prayer book is currently in preparation and will be available soon.
Humbled Paul Melley
Music collection now available!
In the Sight of the Angels Michael Joncas
Containing themes of divine providence, rescue, and sustenance, In the Sight of the Angels comes from
the heart of Joncas’s own suffering due to a bout with Guillain-Barré syndrome. After his recovery, Joncas
experienced a new surge of musical creativity that gave birth to this new collection.
The lush choral music and elaborate instrumentation make In the Sight of the Angels a beautiful
collection replete with psalm settings, including “Drink in the Richness of God,” “In the Sight of the
Angels,” and “Till the End of My Days.” Also present are settings of the three New Testament Lukan
infancy canticles—the “Canticle of Zechariah,” the “Canticle of Mary,” and the “Canticle of Simeon.”
But, perhaps most appropriate in light of Joncas’s recent experiences are the songs delineating the work
of the Holy Spirit, God’s breath (ruach): “All Who Are Led by the Spirit,” “Lord, Send Out Your Spirit,”
and “Veni, Sancte Spiritus.” Those who sing it, play it, and/or hear it will grow closer to God.
This thoughtful and sincere recording by new GIA artist Paul Melley contains poignant
New! and relevant texts, many straight from the Lectionary for Mass. With solid Catholic theology
and a contemporary Christian music style, Humbled will truly inspire both your
worship and your private meditation.
Contemplative songs like “Out of the Depths,” “You Will Know,” and “I Am” feel like a warm embrace
of peace and comfort while “Our Help Is from the Lord,” “Faith, Hope, and Love,” and “The Lord Has
Done Great Things for Us” will stir your spirit and move you to sing and dance for joy. You can’t help but
become involved in this music.
This disciple of Christ sings his faith from the heart, and the songs on this recording go beyond mere
The Conductor as Leader
Principles of Leadership Applied to Life on the Podium
Ramona M. Wis
How do you inspire the musicians in front of you, help them to catch the fire of your vision for the group, and learn
to work together as people, instead of just learning to sing or play on the beat together? How do you lead them?
The leadership role of conductors is, on the one hand, obvious. As leaders, conductors have the job of cueing
entrances, holding fermati, and executing final cutoffs with a flourish.
But there is so much more to musical leadership: vision, trust, persuasion, and character are just a few of the
concepts explored in this remarkable volume that brings the wealth of leadership literature to bear on the business
of running a musical ensemble. Think Stephen Covey (of 7 Habits fame) meets Benjamin Zander (of the Boston
Philharmonic).
At last there is a book that applies the principles business leaders have turned to for years to the task of leading
a musical ensemble. Whether you stand before a fourth grade chorus or a philharmonic orchestra, The Conductor
as Leader will inspire you to go beyond teaching notes and rhythms to learning how to build connections between
people that enhance their quality of life—and their musical performance.
The newest release in the GIA ChoralWorks series
Inscape Choral Music of Gerald Custer
The Voices of Anam Cara—James Jordan, conductor
Inscape firmly establishes Gerald Custer as a major talent in choral composition. Gloriously performed by the voices of Anam
Cara, conducted by James Jordan, this CD is simply breathtaking. As beautiful as this music is, most is readily accessible to
high school and college choirs, and is published as part of GIA’s Evoking Sound Choral Series. This project is a culmination of
a remarkable friendship and true synergy between Custer and Anam Cara. Writes Jordan: “I hope this recording will serve to
introduce you to this honest, fresh, and gifted compositional voice. Gerald Custer is an amazing combination of composer, poet,
and scholar, which produces choral music of not only great beauty but also profound message… As choral musicians, we all
know that great choral music takes us on such profound inner journeys.” This recording certainly achieves its ambitious goals.
The Biblical Way of the Cross
David Haas
Like the Stations initiated by Pope John Paul II in 1991, The Biblical Way of the Cross offers a scriptural account of the
condemnation and crucifixion of Jesus. This deeper and more accurate portrayal of Jesus’ final steps begins with Jesus
praying in the Garden of Olives and journeys through his betrayal, condemnation, scourging, crucifixion, and burial. Haas
also includes an optional fifteenth station commemorating Christ’s resurrection.
Haas’s sensitive treatment of the Way of the Cross includes Scripture readings, communal participation, and music by
the celebrated composer himself as well as his contemporary, Marty Haugen. The glorious beauty of Nicholas Markell’s
iconic art graces the pages within and provides striking visual inspiration.
The Biblical Way of the Cross is appropriate for any Lenten celebration and is perfect for Good Friday. These Stations
are sure to touch the heart and draw people into a more meaningful experience of this beloved Lenten ritual.
Not My Will But Yours Be Done
William Rowan
Not My Will But Yours Be Done is a wonderfully musical yet relatively
brief setting of the Stations, based on a striking fifteen-stanza hymn text
by Thomas Troeger, set to a tune by William Rowan. Each station includes a
simply chanted versicle and response at the beginning and end, one stanza
of the hymn, a biblical text for reading by a leader, and a spoken psalm
excerpt as the response of the assembly. Good for repeated use throughout
Lent. The organ accompaniment offers numerous settings and variations on
the Rowan tune.
Who Calls You by Name, Volume II
Like the first collection, this volume from David Haas provides hymns, songs, psalms, acclamations, and litanies
for the seasons and rites of the RCIA. Contains music for the rite of acceptance, election/sending, the
scrutinies, the Easter Vigil, and the period of mystagogia. Unique to Volume II are some models of how music
can help amplify the Liturgy of the Word, especially during the period of purification and enlightenment
(Lent), with the powerful scrutiny gospels. Also includes acclamations to accompany the catechumens and
candidates as they go forth to break open the word, music for catechetical sessions, and music for the great
period of mystagogia.
Also unique to this collection is a third edition for readers and musicians containing proclamations of the
three scrutiny gospels.
For Organ and Highland Bagpipe...
My Shepherd Will
Supply My Need
Arranged by Timothy Cummings
Based on the southern Appalachian hymn tune
resignation, this hauntingly beautiful instrumental
arrangement pairs organ and highland bagpipe
in a duet that paints a picture of dawning hope.
The two come together briefly in a rich harmonic
exchange only to repeat their eloquent discourse as they ascend toward a
triumphant ending. Easy. Parts also included for C and B-flat instruments.
That You May Have Life Resources
Marty Haugen and Susan Briehl
Marty Haugen’s musical That You May Have Life proclaims the Gospel of John through song. An eclectic array of musical
styles sets the stage for each chapter, bringing the emotion of the characters to life. Musical selections range from
beautiful melodic ballads to lush choral harmonies. Haugen incorporates narration, sung dialog, and song in a way that
conveys more than just the biblical texts. This musical includes such familiar narratives as the woman at the well, the raising
of Lazarus, and the washing of the feet at the Last Supper. The depth and breadth of each tale blooms forth, enticing us
into a personal relationship with these familiar biblical figures. That You May Have Life sings these stories “that you may
believe that Jesus is the Messiah and that through believing you may have life in his name.”
Bring Us Home: Celebrating God’s Love and Mercy Paul Tate
In Bring Us Home Paul Tate nimbly weaves songs of hope, joy, and promise with songs of soulful supplication.
Tate’s wistful “Magnificat” blissfully ascends heavenward while the quiet yet powerful pleading of “If You Love Me”
implores, “Love one another as I have loved you.” The jewel of this recording is most assuredly “Anima Christi.”
At its beginning, this haunting a cappella piece mirrors the stark open harmonies of ancient monastic hymnody but
soon reveals the salvific power of God’s love and mercy.
Arranged for flute, oboe, and clarinet
this evocative arrangement on w o n d r o u s
l o v e begins with eight measures of thematic
music that returns between each
arrangement of the hymntune. The result
is a gentle and mysterious new setting of
a beloved lament in D Dorian mode. This
work is excellent for Good Friday, Lent,
or any celebration of the cross.
This Joyful Eastertide
for Organ with Brass Quartet (optional Quintet)
This Eastertide hymn, set for brass quartet or quintet and organ, is a lively setting of the hymntune v r u e c h t e n. The
brass carries the melody while the organ playfully creates a delightfully pastoral feel. The optional quintet includes a
part for tuba. Also included is a part for horn in F that can be substituted for the first trombone part. This arrangement
is perfect for an Easter morning prelude.
Lift High the Cross
for Organ with Brass Quartet (optional Quintet)
This skillful arrangement of the popular hymntune c r u c i f i e r makes a perfect postlude for Easter Sunday. The toccatalike
writing of the organ accompanies the tune, which is carried by the brass quartet. A key change and broadening
of the tempo in the final stanza brings this piece to a triumphant end. This setting is also appropriate for your Passiontide
and other celebrations.
Sung Passion Gospels
The Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ
All four Passion Gospels for Passion (Palm) Sunday
and Good Friday edited by Robert J. Batastini
Nothing lends dignity and solemnity to the Passion Gospels more than observing the practice of three
deacons or cantors proclaiming these stories according to the traditional chant. Based on the 1988 Vatican
edition of the Passion Gospels, this setting of the Passions according to Matthew, Mark, Luke, and
John from the revised Lectionary is beautifully bound in a cloth-covered “worthy” book.
Liturgists, theologians, Scripture scholars, and pastors alike are growing in their awareness of the
total inappropriateness of having the assembly “play act” by shouting, “Crucify him!” and “Let his
blood be upon us and upon our children.” Why do some insist on asking people to say things they don’t
mean? No wonder assemblies never really shout, “Crucify him!”
This edition restores the Passion Gospels to the idiom of proclamation before the assembly. Modeled
after the Vatican edition and adapted from the Vatican chants, this classic publication printed in black
and red ink captures all the beauty of the original Latin. Large enough so three Passion chanters (Narrator,
Christus, and Speaker) can read from one book, or take advantage of the special pricing by ordering
three copies. Notated in modern, stemless chant notation.
to contemporary English and is ideal for use with the chanted Passion. Can also be used in the context
Beyond its beautiful cover, Oramos Cantando/We Pray in Song contains 86 of the most glorious hymns,
psalms, and songs translated from Spanish to English and English to Spanish. Virtually everything has been
translated, making this hymnal truly the most comprehensive bilingual resource available today.
Oramos Cantando/We Pray in Song provides a satisfying selection of liturgical music, including
17 bilingual psalms and Donna Peña’s new bilingual Lenten Mass, intended to encompass the repertoire
demands of the entire church year. This affordable softcover edition makes the perfect supplement for
multicultural parishes (Latino/Anglo) in need of a bilingual resource to complement their already existing
hymnals. It is a tool that will help such parishes explore the richness in the music of each other’s culture
and potentially begin a trend of worship where all present can fully participate together and celebrate their
diversity.
This softcover edition—which stands on its own—is a prelude to the complete hardcover hymnal.
GIA’s mission for this forthcoming hymnal is to create a resource that will be an exhaustive worship aid for
either Latino communities or Anglo communities and can also serve as a common hymnal for combined
celebrations.
Also available is a complete recording of the contents within Oramos Cantando/We Pray in Song.
This recording is the perfect teaching/planning tool for musicians of multicultural parishes.
