Jetline gives back to education
CHRISTO VERMAAK
Jetline George is part of a progressive South
African copy shop chain, that’s moving to
make books more affordable in the country’s
urban centres.
Jetline, which has 43 branches throughout
South Africa, is looking to address students’
problems with affordable accessing of text-
books and other resources that they require
for their studies.
More than most other places in the country,
George and South Africa’s city centres are
teeming with books.
Almost all of them, however, are locked up in
commercial book stores, out of the reach and
budget of those who need them most.
Jetline has recently signed up with Paperight,
a Cape Town-based start-up that allows any
copy shop to legally print books for their customers
on demand, to help alleviate this problem.
The owner of Jetline George, Greig Fleet
said: Jetline hopes to address the issue of
unaffordable books by deciding to slash printing
prices for students printing books or other
documents through Paperight. Students
can now print their choice of hundreds of
books and other documents on demand for
only 50c per double-sided A4 page, half the
price of the average photocopy, at Jetline
George. Understanding the current crises in
distribution of educational material throughout
South Africa, Jetline hopes to prove
that money can be made by simply making
books cheaper for urban students.”
Fleet confirmed that Arthur Attwell, Paperight’s
CEO and Founder, said that the
offshoot of this is that Jetline will achieve the
high volume of printing jobs needed to allow
them to offer such low printing charges
to their customers. “It’s a cycle that benefits
everyone in the long-term, but it requires a
small leap of faith to kick start it. By doing
this, Jetline is vividly illustrating their determination
to address George and the whole
of South Africa’s problems in effectively distributing
educational material.”
Jetline has recently signed up with Paperight, a Cape Townbased
start-up that allows any copy shop to legally print
books for their customers on demand.
A university staple such as The Great Gatsby
can cost R80-R120 in a commercial
bookstore. Through Jetline, a Paperight edition
of the same book can cost as little as
R40. Jetline is also reducing delivery costs
of printed Paperight documents for customers
in remote areas, meaning that students
don’t have to live in the city to take advantage
of Jetline’s price cuts.

Students gain workplace
experience
The Wholesale and Retail Seta’s workplace experience
and employment grant (WEEG) launch, hosted
by education partner, South Cape FET College,
was a resounding success.
This project, currently in its second round, involves
close integration between three partners, namely
South Cape College, the Seta and various host employers.
The first round kicked off two years ago,
with the initial group of placed students finishing
their internships in January this year. This second
round started on 1 September and will be concluded
at the end of February next year, with a possibility
of extending the employment grant.
The project provides funds allocated by the Seta
for paying stipends to students being employed to
gain work experience at host employers. The current
revised project guidelines stipulate an employment
contract between the college and the student,
with the funds from the Seta being paid to the college.
The college then in turn pays the students.
A memorandum of understanding is then signed
between the college and the host employer. “These
new arrangements protect all parties, make provision
for the legalities of the project and ensure that
the college assists in sharing the responsibility for
the project,” said Mrs Tercia Terblanche, deputy
chief executive officer: Academic, at South Cape
College.
SCC is the first college in the province rolling
out this project. Feedback from one of the previous
host employers, Waltons, was given by Ms
Anne-Mare Tredoux, who praised the skills and
diligence of the students and the opportunities offered
to host employers through these. Tredoux
emphasised that gaining exposure at host employers
is imperative and invaluable. It adds value
to students’ resumes.
One of the ex-students, Modiege Modikwe also
provided feedback. She completed a stint at
Pick n Pay in Oudtshoorn, starting with packing
shelves and cleaning the floor to advancing to the
cash registers and finally ending up in the office.
She is currently employed as a job placement intern
at SCC.
NQtac Hotel School graduates are instantly
employable on completion of their studies.
Many NQtac graduates are happily working on
ships, in London in the UK, Australia, the Netherlands
and in many other parts of the world.
“Our courses are internationally recognised and
designed to equip students for a career in the
hospitality industry.”
Owner Irene Smith explained : “NQtac is a hospitality
training organisation, started in 1995, to
develop and train employed staff from four and
five star hotels throughout Southern Africa, in
order for them to have formal, recognised national
qualifications.
“Since then we have stretched our boundaries
to include training for international clients
throughout Africa, including Namibia, Botswana,
Tanzania, Nigeria and the Seychelles.”
She added, “In 2003, we opened our Hotel
School in George to allow students to study in
the same way as we train people in the industry,
to obtain a working qualification.”
NQtac students achieve international vocation-
al qualifications, through City & Guilds of London,
which entails a percentage of theory, and
a percentage of actual working experience in
operational hotels, restaurants and kitchens.
This allows them to glide smoothly into any
aspect of the hospitality industry on completion
of their qualifications, with a CV containing
Diploma qualifications and up to three years
working experience.
NQtac also offers short courses, varying from
5 days to 16 weeks, in Housekeeping, Food
and Beverage or Professional Cookery and
also on-line studies for those who can’t stop
work to study. The Social Cooking evenings
on Thursdays are very popular and they are
now starting a Kid’s Cooking Class on a Friday
afternoon.
