Duke swimming comes under new leadership in the
2005-06 season as Dan Colella begins his tenure at
Duke as head coach. Colella brings skills from a successful
career as head coach of the women’s swimming
program at the University of Tennessee, where
his teams figured prominently on both the conference and national level, for
the past 12 years.
Ten of Colella’s 12 teams at Tennessee finished in the nation’s top 25,
including the 2004-05 group, which tied for 24th. At the 2005 NCAA Championships
in March, his team claimed 11 All-America honors and broke five
school records. Colella has coached 34 student-athletes to a total of 143 All-
America honors, and eighteen of his student-athletes have earned Southeastern
Conference titles.
In just his third year of serving as head coach at Tennessee, Colella
guided one of the school’s most successful teams to a top 10 showing at the
NCAA Championships, where the team finished ninth. Along the way, Colella’s
student-athletes picked up 30 All-America nods, and Nicole deMan won the
school’s first NCAA individual championship in the 50 freestyle.
Colella’s teams were known for their academic as well as athletic
achievements. Not only did he coach 15 individual Academic All-Americas,
but his team also received the CSCAA Academic All-America Team Award,
earning an “Excellent” designation for GPAs between 3.00 and 3.24.
Colella’s coaching accomplishments have not been limited to the collegiate
level. He has tutored athletes who have competed in the Olympic
Games, Olympic Trials, Pan American Games, Pan Pacific Games, World
Championships and World University Games. Recently, three of his swimmers
made appearances at the 2004 Olympic Trials, and former Tennessee
swimmer Fabiola Molina represented Brazil at the 2000 Olympics.
Colella arrived at Tennessee in 1990 as the assistant women’s swimming
coach and served in that capacity until being promoted to head coach in
1993. From 1986-90, he was the assistant swimming coach at Indian River
Community College in Fort Pierce, Fla., where he helped guide his team to four
NJCAA national men’s and women’s championships. He taught science at
Fort Pierce Central High School in 1985-86 while also serving as the school’s
assistant swimming coach.
Colella earned a B.S. degree in natural resource management and geology
from the University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn., in 1984. In addition to
being a member of the Order of the Gownsmen, an academic honor society,
and Beta Theta Pi, Colella was a member of the school’s swimming team.
He served as captain for two years and earned three accolades as the
team’s MVP from 1981-83. Colella earned two Southern College Athletic
Conference titles by winning the 100 and 200 backstroke in 1981. Over the
course of his collegiate career, he never fell below seventh place in the
conference in any individual event. Specializing in butterfly and individual
medley events, Colella was the university’s all-time leading scorer in championship
meets when he graduated.
Colella and his wife, Victoria, have two children, Henry and George.

Dawn Chuck joins the Duke swimming and diving staff
in 2005-06 as an assistant swimming coach. A graduate
of Brown University and eight-year member of
the Jamaican National Swimming Squad, Chuck brings
extensive international and collegiate swimming experience
to the Duke team.
Chuck is a two-time participant in the Olympic Games, having represented
Jamaica in 2000 and 2004, and has earned medals in the Carifta
Games, Caribbean Island Swimming Championships, Centro Americano y del
Caribe Nataciones and Caribbean and Central American Games.
Chuck graduated in 2002 with a B.S. degree in Psychology from Brown,
where she was a team captain her senior year and is still on the record
books for being a member of the 400-freestyle and 800-freestyle relay teams
that set school records in 2001. She was the Ivy League Champion in the 200
Freestyle in 2001 and the 100 Freestyle in 2002 and participated in the 2002
NCAA Championships.
Chuck went on to earn a master’s degree in Human Performance at the
University of Florida in 2005. While in Gainesville, she worked as a swimming
instructor for Swim America of Gainesville and the Gator Swim Club. The
position at Duke is her first at the collegiate coaching level.
Chuck is originally from Kingston, Jamaica, but joins her sister, Mariana,
at Duke. Mariana, who swam at Brown from 2001-2005, is pursuing a
graduate degree at Duke.
Andy Scott enters his fourth season as the diving
coach for the Blue Devils this year. Under his tutelage
Tim Hyer qualified for the NCAA Zone Regional
Championship in both the one- and three-meter
events in 2002-03 and recovered from an injury to
place 10th in both events at the 2005 ACC Championships. With four promising
freshman divers added to the roster this season, Scott continues to
build the diving program at Duke.
Prior to arriving at Duke, Scott served as an assistant coach for
the men’s and women’s programs at Springfield College in Springfield, Mass.
A former diver for Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Ark., from
1996-00, Scott was a four-year letterman
for the Tigers. As a diver, Scott earned
NAIA All-America honors on both one and
three meters in 1997 and was the NSISL
conference champion on one and three
meters in 1999. Scott was also chosen
for the honor of Arkansas Male College
Diver of the Year in 1999 and 2000.
In addition to his coaching responsibilities,
the Mineral Springs, Ark.,
native enjoys hunting, fishing, playing the
guitar and driving down country
backroads.
Scott received a B.S.E. in biology
with a coaching endorsement from
Ouachita Baptist University in 2000 before
earning his M.Ed. in physical education
from Springfield College in 2002.
Scott is a science teacher at
Rogers-Herr year-round middle school
and resides in Durham.

Duke University’s spacious Taishoff Aquatics Paviliion, completed in
1972, serves as the home for the Duke University Swimming and Diving
teams. The facility boasts a 25-yard, eight-lane racing pool with sevenfoot
lanes and a depth tapering from four-and-a-half feet at each end to a
depth of seven feet in the center. Other features include custom built
stainless starting blocks and ample spectator seating. An eight-lane Omega
electronic timing system with a full eight-lane display board is used for all
collegiate meets.
The facility includes one of the few indoor 10-meter towers in the
Southeast as well as five and seven-meter platforms. The facility also
has two one-meter and two three-meter springboards equipped with
Maxiflex boards. The separate diving well measures 66 feet by 42 feet
with a depth of 17 feet.
The Taishoff Aquatic Pavilion is in a prime location at Duke, mere
steps from Cameron Indoor Stadium – the home of the basketball, volleyball
and wrestling teams – and Wallace Wade Stadium – the site of home
football and track and field events. Not far away are the school’s soccer
and lacrosse fields and tennis courts, making the area perfect for Duke
fans of all sports.

understanding and preventing athletic
injuries. In the case of injury,
one of the nation’s best sports
medicine staffs is available to treat
student-athletes and help them
recover. Student-athletes at Duke may also use elite weight rooms and
training facilities to aid in their athletic performance.

SEASON HIGHLIGHTS
Nine new school records were set by the Blue Devils during the 2004-
2005 season, including two by the women and seven by the men. On the
women’s side, junior Katie Ness once again posted NCAA “B” standards
in the 100 fly and 200 IM. Ness was an All-ACC qualifier after her third
place finish in the 200 IM at ACCs. The team of freshmen Danielle Spearman,
Ness, Nora Stupp, and Julia Lewis broke the 400FR school record at
ACCs. These four ladies also combined to break the school record in the
200MR. Sophomore Jackie Rodriguez also posted an NCAA “B” standard
in the 200 breast. The men had an outstanding year, breaking four new
individual school records, and posting Duke bests in three out of five
relays. Sophomore Kevin Arthofer broke the school record in the 100
breaststroke in November. The record, set in 1980, was currently held by
All-America Eric Steinhouse. Senior John Humphrey broke the 100 fly
record, and classmate David Peck came off a two-year setback from an
injury to shatter the 100 and 200 backstroke records. The Blue Devil men
came together to break three relay records - 200 FR (Ryan Packer, David
Peck, Kevin Arthofer, Billy Pearce), 200 MR (Peck, Arthofer, Humphrey,
Pearce), and 400MR (Peck, Arthofer, Humphrey, Pearce).

Blue Devil Tradition and Athletic Excellence
Duke University is an institution rich with tradition. Year after year,
past and present Blue Devils come back to celebrate the excellence
and excitement surrounding Duke athletic events. As Duke heads towards
yet another year of success and commitment, the traditions
established continue to bring pride to all of those involved.
Duke’s athletic program ranks among the finest in the entire nation.
In 2004-05, Duke secured its highest-ever finish in the 2005
United States Sports Academy Division I Directors’ Cup Standings, a
measure of a school’s all-around athletic success, on the strength of a
women’s golf national championship, five additional top five finishes
and 11 overall top ten finishes. Duke topped all other Atlantic Coast
Conference schools for the second time in the 12-year history of the
Director’s Cup.
Six Blue Devil teams have captured national championships - men’s
basketball in 1991, 1992 and 2001, women’s golf in 1999, 2002 and
2005 and men’s soccer in 1986. Duke has been a very successful
postseason school, sending multiple teams every year to the NCAA
Tournament.
Duke Swimming & Diving
Duke swimming and diving continued its record-setting performances
in 2004-05, breaking nine school records. The women’s
team had a tough act to follow after setting 14 records in 2003-04, but
two relay teams still managed to knock their times last year. Danielle
Spearman, Katie Ness, Nora Stupp and Julia Lewis proved to be the
magic combination, swimming school-best times in both the 400
freestyle and 200 medley relays. Ness once again led the women’s
group at the ACC Championships, placing third in the 200 IM to earn
All-ACC honors.
The men’s team had a breakthrough year, setting seven school
records -- four individual and three relays. Kevin Arthofer shattered
All-America Eric Steinhouse’s 24-year old 100 breaststroke mark, while
John Humphrey added his sixth record to his total mark by swimming
Duke’s fastest 100 butterfly. David Peck notched two top times in the
100 and 200 backstroke. The men’s group also earned best times in
the 200 freestyle, 200 medley and 400 medley relays.
In 2003-04, Ness became Duke’s first ACC Champion and NCAA
Championship participant since 1981. She qualified for the 200 IM
after winning the ACC Championship with an automatic NCAA-qualifying
time in the event (2:00.27). Ness also notched All-ACC honors
in the 100 fly with another Duke record-breaking mark.
Ness, along with Amy Halligan, Julia Lewis and Nora Stupp set
the 800 freestyle relay record, and individually, Halligan shattered
the nearly quarter-century old 400 IM record. Jackie Rodriguez
firmly established herself by breaking a pair of 23-year old distance
freestyle records set by former Olympian Nancy Hogshead.
The 2003-04 men’s team established a new record time in the
800 freestyle relay, which still stands. John Humphrey broke the
200 and 400 IM times.
The history of Duke’s swimming and diving programs dates
back to 1927. The Blue Devils have had just four coaches over those
75 years, including Duke Hall of Fame member Jack Persons, who
coached the Blue Devils for 46 years. Former head coach Thompson,
who retired in 2005 after 26 seasons, had the second-longest
swimming and diving coaching streak in school history.
Nancy Hogshead is the most celebrated swimmer in school
history. A four-time ACC Champion and a
two-time All-America selection at Duke,
Hogshead still owns school records in
five of the nine events she swam in as a
Blue Devil. Hogshead went on to capture
four medals (three gold and one silver) at
the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, Calif.
For her accomplishments, she became
the first female inducted into the Duke
Sports Hall of Fame in 1994.
On the men’s side, Don Schumacher,
Steve Smith and Eric Steinhouse were all
three-time ACC Champions. Steinhouse,
an All-America selection in both the 100
and 200 breaststroke in 1980, was the
ACC Swimmer of the Year and finished
fourth in the 100 breaststroke at the 1980
NCAA Championships.

Duke University has a commitment to the pursuit

One of the characteristics that distinguishes universities
from most small colleges is the unusual
array of resources that enhance the learning experience.

connected to the campus network are fully accessible
to undergraduates.
