Guided by the Strategic Plan that was
approved by Duke’s Board of Trustees in
April of 2008, White made an immediate
successfully oversaw Duke’s fundraising efforts during an
economic downturn; completed partnerships with major corporate
entities to enhance revenue streams; commissioned a master
facilities plan to position Duke well into the 21st Century; and
emphasized a stronger commitment to the university’s intramural,
club and recreational sports programs.
In his first year at Duke, White oversaw a program that won a
national championship (women’s tennis) - the school’s 10th overall -
two individual NCAA Championships (fencing and women’s tennis)
and four ACC titles (men’s basketball, men’s lacrosse, women’s
White and his wife, Jane, a former college track and field
coach, have fi ve children and eight grandchildren.
Duke Fencing Facilities: The Duke fencing team has access to
some of the finest athletic and academic facilities in the country.
From the Duke Fencing Gym to the Michael W. Krzyzewski
Center for Athletic and Academic Excellence, Duke University
provides all of its student-fencer athletes with the facilities they
need to succeed in and out of the gym.
The Duke Fencing Gym: The Fencing Gym is an effi cient,
well-designed, air-conditioned, high-tech fencing gym that meets
the needs of the fencers in numerous levels: eleven grounded
strips with permanent scoring machines and repeaters on each
end of each strip, all overhead reels; mirrors on three walls;
speed-of-reaction training machines; practice dummies with
electric vest and scoring machine; electric point control station
and storage for bags, weapons, masks and shoes. Adjacent to
the Fencing Gym is a full Armory where all gear is maintained
for the fencers.
The Murray Building: The Murray building houses a studentathlete
weight-training facility as well as the student-athlete
athletic training room. Duke’s strength and conditioning staff
consists of fi ve full-time coaches, including Alayne Rusnak,
who instructs all of Duke’s fencers. Duke also boasts 12 athletic
trainers, including Kristi Hall, who is in charge of treatment of
Duke’s fencing team. In addition, Dr. Bytomski, the Duke Athletics
doctor, sees all student-athletes in the Murray Training Room.
The Michael W. Krzyzewski Center for Athletic and Academic
Excellence: The “CAE” is the newest addition to Duke’s athletic
facilities, having been completed in February, 2008. In addition to
basketball courts and weight training facilities, the center boasts
numerous study rooms, computers and a lounge where Duke’s
student-athletes can work on their class assignments.
Yoga And Pilates Class: Specifi c to Duke’s fencing program,
Lisa Jindra serves as the team’s Yoga and Pilates instructor. The
yoga/pilates sessions, held once or twice weekly, evolve over
the semester in intensity and focus, acting as a counterpoint
to the weight and fencing training programs, helping to create
complete and balanced physical training.
What The Parents Are Saying
“Being part of the men’s fencing team has been
the highlight of our son’s experience at Duke. The
camaraderie among the team members has been
exceptional. At Duke, academics come first. The
fencing team has accommodated our son’s engineering
class schedule. The Duke Home Meet is
a unique and unparalleled college fencing event.
Coach Beguinet and the fencers transform Card
Gym into an exquisitely decorated venue in which
the fencers duel in a setting invoking eras long
past.”
Jerry and Lydia
Eitel, parents of
David Eitel, Duke ’09
“One of the things we like about Duke Fencing is that
the men’s and women’s teams train and travel together. The
team quickly became a big part of our daughter’s social life,
as it was in high school, and we like the fact that she has a
terrific group of people, both male and female, looking out
for her. We also appreciate how nice Coach Alex Beguinet
and his wife, Elizabeth are to the parents. They know that
we miss our kids and miss seeing them fence, and they are
so welcoming when we visit for Parent’s Weekend or for the
annual Duke tournament. That tournament, by the way, is
a fantastic, well-run event that we wouldn’t miss. It’s one of
the many times you’ll feel proud your son or daughter is at
Duke.”
Kathy and Paul Shaskan parents of
Noel Shaskan, Duke ’09
“Over the years I
have witnessed many talented
fencers leave the sport. It is a testament
to Coach Alex and his
staff that my son’s experience as
a Duke fencer not only helped
him grow as a responsible human
being, but also instilled a
greater love for his sport. For
these, I am eternally grateful.”
Jon Moss, father of
Zach Moss, Duke ’07
“I would say that we did not
feel any pressure in reaching out to
Duke or Alex to express our desire
to attend the university and be part
of a special fencing team. Andrew
is very happy that there is a pre-season
program for the team. It helps to
not only prepare them physically for
the season, but also allows the team
to bond and make a commitment to
each other. There is no meet like
the Duke Meet. No school has a
coach that works so hard to make
the Duke Meet the most memorable
event in the fencers’ season. The
pomp and circumstance that Alex
creates makes every fencer feel like
a champion, and the vision of the
flags, posters and decorated strips,
and the cheers from fellow fencers,
students and parents will be treasured
forever.”
Rob and Lori Simon, parents of
Andrew Simon, Duke ’09
“The pre-acceptance experience was pain free. We were
amazed especially after hearing about all the horror stories
from other fencers. When other fencers got to their university,
things were not as promised. …When Becca arrived at
Duke, things were exactly the way it was promised. Direct
honesty is very refreshing. We were informed very well
about the recruiting process. Even in our final visit to
Duke, Elizabeth and Alex took extra care to make sure
that our time together met the exact letter of the NCAA
rules. The information provided was extremely helpful
in sorting out what could and could not be
done…the process was painless. Due to sponsorships,
we were very careful …any questions we had
were promptly researched and answered by the Duke Compliance
people.
My daughter is sooo happy at
Duke. She had to change a class
and met with her athletic academic
advisor. The problem was handled
promptly and without any fuss.
It was wonderful to see how well
they worked with her.
After meeting with Alex and
Elizabeth, there was no question
that we wanted our daughter to be
a Blue Devil. Having been in the
fencing world 9 years, we saw so
many fencing coaches that were
in it for themselves and just NOT
nice people. Then we met Alex.
We didn’t believe he could be real.
He was completely approachable.
Alex was honest and up-front. We
asked around at meets, too. No one
had a single bad thing to say about
Alex and Elizabeth. We are quite
satisfied Blue Devil Parents.”
Duke University was created in 1924 by
James Buchanan Duke as a memorial to his
father, Washington Duke. The Dukes, a Durham
family who built a worldwide financial empire in
the manufacture of tobacco and developed the
production of electricity in the two Carolinas,
had long been interested in Trinity College. Trinity
traced its roots to 1838 in nearby Randolph
County when local Methodist and Quaker communities
joined forces to support a permanent
school, which they named Union Institute. After
a brief period as Normal College (1851-59), the
school changed its name to Trinity College in
1859 and affiliated with the Methodist Church.
The college moved to Durham in 1892 with
financial assistance from Washington Duke
and the donation of land by Julian S. Carr. In
December 1924, the school’s trustees gratefully
accepted the provisions of James B. Duke’s
indenture creating the family philanthropic foundation,
The Duke Endowment, which provided,
in part, for the expansion of Trinity College into
Duke University.
As a result of the Duke gift, Trinity underwent
both physical and academic expansion. The
original Durham Campus became known as East
Campus when it was rebuilt in stately Georgian
architecture. West Campus, Gothic in style and
dominated by the soaring 210-foot tower of Duke
Chapel, opened in 1930. Academic expansion of
the university included the establishment of new
graduate and professional schools.
Modern times have seen Duke realize its
founder’s aspirations to become a major center
of learning. The Duke University Medical Center
has achieved international prominence, and
many Duke schools and departments are consistently
ranked among the nation’s best.
Some quick facts about Duke include:
• Duke has a student:faculty ratio of 10:1
• Seventy-five percent of classes at Duke have
16-35 students
• Student-athletes make up more than 10 percent
of the Duke student body
• Duke has six professional schools — Fuqua
School of Business, Divinity, Nicholas School
of the Environment and Earth Sciences, Law,
Medicine and Nursing —and two undergraduate
schools — Trinity College (Arts & Sciences) and
Pratt School of Engineering
• Ninety-three percent of Duke students graduate
in four years

The average temperature in Durham
is 59 degrees, and snowfall totals
less than eight inches per year. A
temperate climate and unique blend
of big-city activity with an unfrenzied
pace make Durham a great place to
call home.
Located in the heart of North Carolina’s rolling
Piedmont region, Durham stands out as a gem
among southern cities. Through the years, the
city has evolved from a tobacco and textile town
into an international center for medicine, scholarship,
biotechnology and electronics.
Founded in 1853, Durham is widely recognized
for its diversity. Originally a manufacturing
center, the city now is known for excellence in
medicine, education, research and industry. The
wide range of activities available in the area lends
the city a multifaceted appeal that strikes even
fi rst-time visitors.
Durham has a natural appeal as well, characterized
by 98,000 acres of hardwood and evergreen
forests including the only remaining old
growth Piedmont bottomland forests and 7,800
acres of cropland. Hills and dales, meandering
rivers and streams, several lakes, 26 rare plant
species and several rare species of birds and
animals can also be found here.
With 187,000 residents in the one-city county,
Durham is the fourth-largest city in North Carolina.
It is ideally located on the large and small scale.
Within the immediate area it stands as the pinnacle
of the “Triangle” region of North Carolina,
a metropolitan population of 1 million people that
includes Chapel Hill to the south and west and
Raleigh, the state capital, to the south and east.
On a regional level, this area is the primary center
of culture, sports, education and government
between Washington, D.C., and Atlanta.
With excellent sports and cultural activities
in the area, Durham is a fun place to be. People
from all walks of life — academic, industrial,
professional, agricultural — blend to provide a
warm, rich sense of hospitality and diversity.
