Rookie David Wilson and the Giants special teams unit had a record breaking day, as the
Giants defeated the Saints, 52-27, in a pivotal game that helped New York stay atop of
the NFC East.
The Saints got the scoring started when cornerback Elbert Mack made a bobbling interception
off an Eli Manning pass that he returned 72-yards for a touchdown. On the
ensuing kickoff, Wilson returned the kickoff 97-yards to tie the score at seven apiece.
On several drives when the Saints offense was moving the ball, it seemed like the Giants
were always able to generate turnovers at the right time. Stevie Brown intercepted two
passes, while Linval Joseph and Antrel Rolle added fumble recoveries in the first quarter.
The explosive kickoff returns of Wilson and Jerrel Jernigan, along with the four turnovers
forced by the defense allowed the Giants to start many of their drives in Saints territory.
Wilson set the Giants single-season record with kickoff return yards with 1,301. Brown
also set a franchise record, by amassing 259 interception return yards so far on the
season.
Wilson became the first player in NFL history to rush for 100-yards with two touchdowns
and record more than 200 kickoff return yards and a touchdown, as he accumulated
337 all-purpose yards for the day. Manning went 22-of-35 passing for 259 yards, four
touchdowns and two interceptions. Victor Cruz caught eight passes for 121 yards and a
touchdown and he surpassed 1,000 receiving yards for the second season in a row. The
Giants scored four touchdowns in five trips to the red zone.
The Giants eclipsed the 50-point scoring mark for the first time in 26 years.
