SCHOOL. NEWS The adventures of Paddington Readers of the Glebe Report will recall that Paddington Bear left Antoinette Chéné's Kindergarten class at Mutchmor School on April 14th for a summer job at Expo '86 to install flags at the Canadian pavilion. During the week prior to the opening in Vancouver, children were arriving at school almost daily with pictures of the Expo site and clear evidence of their bear's progress at his new job. So it was with equal measures of surprise and concern that on Tuesday, April 29, the children witnessed the arrival of Paddington at Mutchmor in an ambulance, in the care of attendants Michael Dunlop and Jeff O'Hearn. According to Paddington's description of events, it was in a moment of sheer bear carelessness that he slipped and fell from the bucket of a cherry picker, By Antoinette Cherie Doctors and nurses, David, Sarah, Pamela and Christina take good care of their bear. suffering a scraped nose, a broken arm, bruised ribs and a number of other contusions, the location of which was made apparent from many bandages on his bear body. During his convalescence this past few weeks, his spirits have been improving under the tender, loving care of his classmates. David Howman invited him to his 6th birthday party. Stéphane Coté took him to a picnic and canoe ride on the Rideau Canal. Julia Gomez brought him to see the water skiing at Dow's Lake and David Coyle had him for a week-end outing at his home. Paddington is enjoying the attention his classmates are lavishing upon him so much that he is almost over the disappointment of not being able to work this summer and save for the purchase of his dream motorcycle - oh well: Better luck next time Paddington. Corpus Christi news update As a Lenten project, Mr. McEvoy's grade 2 and 3 bilingual classes donated their change for the poor. On March 26 they turned over $82.07 to Mr. Chris MacDonald for use by the Good Shepherd Society (St. Brigid's Soup Kitchen). The junior kindergartens of Corpus Christi faithfully brought in their nickels and dimes and collected $80 for a needy family. It was a tremendous accomplishment for such little people and thanks must also go to their parents. Corpus Christi grade 4 classes celebrated the Sacrament of Reconciliation on April 25. Fathers French, O'Donnell, Whelan and Bernardo officiated at the ceremony. Afterwards parents, teachers, priests and students enjoyed a luncheon party. The grade 6 students of Corpus Christi received their confirmation on April 30 at St. Patrick's Church. The Most Reverend Archbishop Plourde officiated and a reception was held afterwards in the parish hall. The grade 2 children received their first communion on Sunday, May 4, at Canadian Martyrs Church and on Sunday, May 11, at Blessed Sacrament Church. A reception was held afterwards in the parish hall. Our congratulations to all the children of Corpus Christi who received these important sacraments. Corpus Christi celebrated a fabulous Education Week. We have certainly started "refining our gold". On Wednesday, May 30, the school presented its Spring Concert which was a great success. On Thursday, May 1, a Marian liturgy was held honouring our Blessed Mother. On Friday, May 2, a variety of activities took place. Students taught egg decorating and origami. Simon Brascoupé, an Indian artist and parent, demonstrated some of his artistic techniques. The Ottawa Public Library came in to give a library presentation. Les Gorman, a teacher from St. Joseph's High School, came to sing some of his original compositions. David Cohen conducted a chess competition. The Scottish Highland and Country Dance Society came in to give dance lessons to all of us. It was a wonderful rewarding week. Last but not least, Jim Downey, custodian of Corpus Christi, was feted at a retirement party held in Corpus Christi School gym on Wednesday, May 28. This warm, humorous, friendly man has had 21 years of service at the school.
