universities and research agencies.<br />

Such organisations therefore help to deliver sustainable development and economic growth <strong>of</strong> industry<br />

through:<br />

Supporting strategic manufacturing (and allied) industries and their enabling technology sectors.<br />

Giving greater access and direct exposure <strong>of</strong> SME firms to new and emerging technologies.<br />

Providing skilled technological assistance to a range <strong>of</strong> companies, particularly SMEs, who need and<br />

want varying degrees <strong>of</strong> such assistance i.e. extend the range <strong>of</strong> SMEs assisted.<br />

Facilitating collaboration and cooperation between new product development contributors.<br />

Stimulating and implementing collaborative activities between Multi-National Corporations (MNCs),<br />

SMEs and micro-enterprises and industry Associations.<br />

Establishing key mechanisms to enhance university and graduates and industry interaction.<br />

Disseminating industry best practices to companies on a coordinated national basis.<br />

<strong>Improving</strong> the capacity <strong>of</strong> national non-pr<strong>of</strong>it industry support organisations and centres <strong>of</strong> expertise<br />

to support the objectives <strong>of</strong> the IIW and its members working together.<br />

These outcomes can be delivered in the technology diffusion processes that occur within and also<br />

across “industry verticals“, and involve the application <strong>of</strong> technologies and skills which are pervasive and<br />

transforming in nature.<br />

8.2.2 Key Actions and Activities in Technology Diffusion<br />

Technology Diffusion is a vital element <strong>of</strong> the total innovation process with the key activities being as<br />

follows:<br />

Initially identifying and analysing the needs <strong>of</strong> industry.<br />

Sourcing solutions to meet these needs including R&D.<br />

Diffusing the technology and information into companies, particularly SMEs and micro-enterprises.<br />

Adopting, adapting and implementing new technology/information by technology receptors.<br />

<strong>Improving</strong> performance <strong>of</strong> the companies through innovation.<br />

Providing feedback for further national improvement at each stage <strong>of</strong> this technology and<br />

information process.<br />

Many IIW Members have strategic plans containing a number <strong>of</strong> the key actions shown below, as well as<br />

conducting many <strong>of</strong> the key activities listed against each key action.<br />
