To act as a role model and assist with the delivery of <strong>Club</strong> activities.<br />

The <strong>Caledonian</strong> <strong>Club</strong> is an educationally based project with a longterm<br />

vision to facilitate true social change in the communities<br />

Glasgow <strong>Caledonian</strong> University serves. We work with young people,<br />

from nursery age through all school stages and their families to raise<br />

the life‐long learning aspirations of our members and equip them<br />

with key life skills. We achieve this by offering targeted nursery,<br />

primary and secondary schools a linked set of activities delivered by<br />

staff and students from GCU.<br />

Working as a <strong>Student</strong> <strong>Mentor</strong> will offer you first and foremost the<br />

opportunity to earn money in a part‐time job with the flexibility to fit<br />

around your studies. However, it will also allow you to fulfil a role as<br />

an active citizen, develop skills to improve your future employment<br />

prospects and meet and work with other GCU students from a<br />

variety of disciplines. You will also be eligible to enrol on GCU’s<br />

<strong>Student</strong> Leaders Programme.


Person Specification<br />

Education • <strong>Student</strong>s must be registered on an undergraduate GCU programme.<br />

Experience • Experience of working with young people is advantageous, however<br />

full training is given prior to participation.<br />

• We aim to recruit students from a wide variety of entry routes into<br />

Higher Education and are particularly (though not exclusively) keen<br />

to recruit mentors either from GOALS/FOCUS West schools or from<br />

our own <strong>Caledonian</strong> <strong>Club</strong> schools, so they can return to their former<br />

school as role models. The <strong>Caledonian</strong> <strong>Club</strong> secondary schools are:<br />

All Saints Secondary, Drumchapel High, Springburn Academy, St<br />

Margaret Mary’s Secondary and Whitehill Secondary.<br />

Knowledge • Knowledge of the GCU campus is essential.<br />

• Appreciation of widening access initiatives is expected.<br />

• Knowledge of the Scottish education system would be<br />

advantageous.<br />

• We aim to recruit students from a variety of schools and<br />

departments across the University, who can apply their knowledge<br />

to the activities of the <strong>Caledonian</strong> <strong>Club</strong> and act as ambassadors for<br />

GCU. In addition to our general mentors, we are also interested in<br />

students with expertise in animation, dietetics, music, drama or art,<br />

so please make this clear on your application if you have any of<br />

these additional skills.<br />

• <strong>Student</strong>s should have access to the internet, an e‐mail address and<br />

ideally a mobile phone, in order to sign up to activities and keep in<br />

touch with the <strong>Caledonian</strong> <strong>Club</strong> office and other students.<br />

• <strong>Student</strong>s should be prepared to travel to local schools alongside<br />

<strong>Caledonian</strong> <strong>Club</strong> staff. <strong>Student</strong>s who have their own car can claim<br />

back mileage if they use it to transport other staff and mentors to<br />

<strong>Caledonian</strong> <strong>Club</strong> activities, but must have the appropriate business<br />

insurance.<br />

If successful at group interview stage, any appointment is subject to<br />

receipt of satisfactory references and a PVG member check. In addition,<br />

all students must participate in skills training for the various elements of<br />

the programme and associated focus groups to enable the <strong>Caledonian</strong><br />

<strong>Club</strong> to grow and develop.

As a <strong>Student</strong> <strong>Mentor</strong>, you will be given the opportunity to be trained and take part in some<br />

or all of the following activities alongside <strong>Club</strong> staff and subject experts.<br />

Other Activities<br />

<strong>Mentor</strong>s work with pupils in their pre‐school nursery year to help them<br />

understand where they are in their educational journey by leading them<br />

through activities relevant to their age and stage. This visit takes place<br />

over half a day at GCU and parents are invited to come along. Through<br />

participation, pupils are inducted into the <strong>Club</strong>.<br />

<strong>Mentor</strong>s work with pupils in school for half a day over a four week<br />

period to create the story, art work and narration of a digital and print<br />

book in our ‘Molly and Cally’ adventure series. The project culminates in<br />

a showcase for pupils, parents and teachers the following month.<br />

<strong>Mentor</strong>s work with groups of pupils in school and on campus on a quiz<br />

to learn about university and drama and animation workshops based on<br />

a particular theme, which links into the school curriculum. <strong>Student</strong>s<br />

assist pupils in creating stop‐motion animations, which are screened a<br />

few weeks later to pupils and their families.<br />

<strong>Mentor</strong>s work with groups of pupils in school and on campus to assist<br />

them with their SQA options and choices through various workshops<br />

and challenges. This projects aims to give pupils a better understanding<br />

of how their school subjects link practically to future study and careers<br />

and raises their aspirations.<br />

<strong>Mentor</strong>s are assigned a group of pupils to work with over a half day in<br />

school and two days at GCU. <strong>Student</strong>s aid pupils in completing a real<br />

life business marketing challenge by working through the various stages<br />

of the brief and giving them the confidence to pitch their ideas to a<br />

panel of experts.<br />

<strong>Mentor</strong>s work with those pupils who took part on the S6 challenge but<br />

who are now considering Higher Education when they leave school.<br />

They take them to first year classes in a subject they are interested in to<br />

help them confirm their intention to apply for a specific course.<br />

<strong>Mentor</strong>s may have the opportunity to take part in other <strong>Club</strong> activities<br />

such as our nursery nutrition project, P2 music project, S6 mentoring<br />

and community engagement activities and the promotion of the <strong>Club</strong><br />

within and outside the university.
