north aisle of the nave (nV) which, with its
strong Marian significance, sets the tone for the
entire programme. The windows east of the
screen, in the most liturgically important part of
the building, depict an almost continuous
narrative from the birth of the Virgin to the
descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, a cycle
in which the redemptive act of Christ's Passion
and Crucifixion dominates in the chancel east
window. The different elements of the cycle are
associated with the three altars at the east end:
the life of the Virgin and the birth and infancy
of Christ in the Lady Chapel; the Passion,
Crucifixion, Deposition, Entombment and
Harrowing of Hell in the two chancel windows;
and episodes following the Resurrection and
leading up to the Ascension of Christ in the
Corpus Christi Chapel.
