market in front of the Golden Roof. 40 years later and the unique Alpine<br />

town presents the traditional alongside the modern, mountain<br />

Years<br />

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the <strong>Christmas</strong> Market in<br />

front of the Golden Roof – the traditional market in the historic,<br />

medieval Old Town was born in the year 1973. Celebrate with us<br />

and experience a glittering birthday party in this unique market atmosphere,<br />

now with over 70 stalls. A visit to the viewing platform<br />

over the hut rooftops or the enchanting “Fairytale and Giants Alley”<br />

is an absolute must – on a stroll through the market you will find<br />

<strong>Christmas</strong> tree decorations, arts and crafts and a few curiosities.<br />

Then round off your evening under the magnificent <strong>Christmas</strong> tree<br />

in front of the Golden Roof, with the traditional sounds of the tower<br />

trumpeters filling the crisp air each day and a mug of mulled wine<br />

warming your hands.<br />

This traditional, cosy, Tyrolean village-style market is an experience<br />

the whole family will love. The huge range on offer, including<br />

a puppet show, storytelling, pony rides, petting zoo, nostalgic carousel<br />

as well as music groups and folklore, charms visitors young<br />

and old alike. The real eye-catcher though is the glittering Swarovski<br />

crystal tree that towers over the whole square; it is one-of-a-kind<br />

and stands over 14 metres high! More than 60 market stalls selling<br />

<strong>Christmas</strong> products and a variety of food stands add to the market’s<br />

appeal and make it a popular meeting place.<br />

Innsbruck’s main shopping street will once again dazzle visitors<br />

with a cornucopia of lights, glass and crystal – an avenue of glittering<br />

illuminated trees, with modern lighting design and vivid mountain<br />

crystal, giving this <strong>Christmas</strong> market a very special flair. The 30<br />

stalls offer an exciting array of international <strong>Christmas</strong> products and<br />

all manner of delicious treats. It’s clear to see the world comes to<br />

On the Hungerburgbahn funicular, getting to the “highest” <strong>Christmas</strong><br />

Market is an experience in itself. Once at the top, not only are you<br />

guaranteed breathtaking views of Innsbruck, the small-but-special<br />

market also offers an array of culinary delights and a wide range of<br />

<strong>Christmas</strong> souvenirs. From here you can also hop aboard the panoramic<br />

cable car and continue on up to the Seegrube and even<br />

further up to the Hafelekar at 2,256m. Mountains have never been<br />

The <strong>Christmas</strong> market at Wiltener Platzl is calm and contemplative.<br />

Heavenly aromas of gingerbread and candied nuts waft from the<br />

stalls and the gentle sounds of <strong>Christmas</strong> fill the cold wintery air.<br />

Dozens of lanterns bathe the <strong>Christmas</strong> market at Wiltener Platzl in<br />

an Advent ambience. The perfect place to listen to tales of <strong>Christmas</strong><br />

or sample a traditional dish or two.<br />

Crystalline World Sensation<br />

The Swarovski Crystal Tree<br />

Making its first appearance in 2012, the global sensation by Swarovski<br />

will again stand resplendently at Marktplatz square, beside<br />

the river Inn. At over 14 metres high, the “crystal tree” can be seen<br />

for miles around. It is made up of more than 170,500 Swarovski<br />

crystals, equipped with special energy-saving LED lights, and glitters<br />

over the entire market and beyond.

CHRISTMAS MARKETS OPENING CELEBRATIONS<br />

<strong>Christmas</strong> Market in the Old Town & Marktplatz<br />

Fri 15 Nov. <strong>2013</strong>, from 5 pm<br />

For the 40th anniversary of the <strong>Christmas</strong> market in Innsbruck’s<br />

Old Town, visitors can look forward to a journey through time before<br />

the 1,300 (or more) lights on the <strong>Christmas</strong> tree in front of<br />

the Golden Roof are switched on. At Marktplatz square, the giant<br />

Swarovski crystal tree shines in all its glory. The opening celebrations<br />

will again be staged with an abundance of music, angels,<br />

light and sparkle.<br />

Hungerburg <strong>Christmas</strong> Market<br />

Fri 22 Nov. <strong>2013</strong>, 5 pm<br />

The traditional opening of this market up on the Hungerburg<br />

takes place with a magnificent view across the whole city. Visitors<br />

can expect an atmospheric programme accompanied by the<br />

children’s choir.<br />

<strong>Christmas</strong> Market in Wilten<br />

Mon 25 Nov. <strong>2013</strong>, 4 pm<br />

<strong>Christmas</strong> magic begins in the district of Wilten on 25th November.<br />

Look forward to various arts and crafts, traditional gifts and<br />

many a curiosity at this market.<br />

A spectacular fire show always sets the perfect mood on the<br />

opening day of this market. Excitement builds to the sounds of<br />

that gets the whole family in the <strong>Christmas</strong> spirit. The festive procession<br />

goes down Maria-Theresien-Straße, Marktgraben, Herzog-<br />

Otto-Straße and Herrengasse and on to the State Theatre (Landestheater),<br />

where all join in to sing “Silent Night”. Admission free!<br />

Fairytale and Giant’s Alley<br />

Set off on an exciting journey through the alleyways of the Old<br />

Town. On a walk through the “enchanted forest” you will encounter<br />

28 life-size characters from fairytales and legends, who all<br />

look on from the historical facades, and three impressive giants.<br />

The daily fairytale performances at the Theatre Wagon in Kiebachgasse<br />

lane delight both young and the young-at-heart. Fantastic<br />

prizes are to be had in the great fairytale competition, in which<br />

every child can paint his or her own favourite fairytale. Card for<br />

painting on is available from the angels at the infor-mation stand<br />

in front of the Ottoburg restaurant in the Old Town.
