In December 1973, we saw the birth of Innsbruck’s first Christmas
market in front of the Golden Roof. 40 years later and the unique Alpine
town presents the traditional alongside the modern, mountain
adventures together with urban diversity.

Christmas Market in Innsbruck’s Old Town –

Years
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Christmas Market in
front of the Golden Roof – the traditional market in the historic,
medieval Old Town was born in the year 1973. Celebrate with us
and experience a glittering birthday party in this unique market atmosphere,
now with over 70 stalls. A visit to the viewing platform
over the hut rooftops or the enchanting “Fairytale and Giants Alley”
is an absolute must – on a stroll through the market you will find
Christmas tree decorations, arts and crafts and a few curiosities.
Then round off your evening under the magnificent Christmas tree
in front of the Golden Roof, with the traditional sounds of the tower
trumpeters filling the crisp air each day and a mug of mulled wine
warming your hands.

Christmas Market at Marktplatz – the family market

This traditional, cosy, Tyrolean village-style market is an experience
the whole family will love. The huge range on offer, including
a puppet show, storytelling, pony rides, petting zoo, nostalgic carousel
as well as music groups and folklore, charms visitors young
and old alike. The real eye-catcher though is the glittering Swarovski
crystal tree that towers over the whole square; it is one-of-a-kind
and stands over 14 metres high! More than 60 market stalls selling
Christmas products and a variety of food stands add to the market’s
appeal and make it a popular meeting place.

the modern market

Innsbruck’s main shopping street will once again dazzle visitors
with a cornucopia of lights, glass and crystal – an avenue of glittering
illuminated trees, with modern lighting design and vivid mountain
crystal, giving this Christmas market a very special flair. The 30
stalls offer an exciting array of international Christmas products and
all manner of delicious treats. It’s clear to see the world comes to
Innsbruck! Also open after New Year’s Eve until 6th January 2014.

Hungerburg Christmas Market – the panoramic market

On the Hungerburgbahn funicular, getting to the “highest” Christmas
Market is an experience in itself. Once at the top, not only are you
guaranteed breathtaking views of Innsbruck, the small-but-special
market also offers an array of culinary delights and a wide range of
Christmas souvenirs. From here you can also hop aboard the panoramic
cable car and continue on up to the Seegrube and even
further up to the Hafelekar at 2,256m. Mountains have never been
so close! Open every Fri – Sun from 12 noon – 7 pm

Christmas Magic in Wilten – the arty market

The Christmas market at Wiltener Platzl is calm and contemplative.
Heavenly aromas of gingerbread and candied nuts waft from the
stalls and the gentle sounds of Christmas fill the cold wintery air.
Dozens of lanterns bathe the Christmas market at Wiltener Platzl in
an Advent ambience. The perfect place to listen to tales of Christmas
or sample a traditional dish or two.

Crystalline World Sensation
The Swarovski Crystal Tree

Making its first appearance in 2012, the global sensation by Swarovski
will again stand resplendently at Marktplatz square, beside
the river Inn. At over 14 metres high, the “crystal tree” can be seen
for miles around. It is made up of more than 170,500 Swarovski
crystals, equipped with special energy-saving LED lights, and glitters
over the entire market and beyond.

CHRISTMAS MARKETS OPENING CELEBRATIONS
Christmas Market in the Old Town & Marktplatz
Fri 15 Nov. 2013, from 5 pm
For the 40th anniversary of the Christmas market in Innsbruck’s
Old Town, visitors can look forward to a journey through time before
the 1,300 (or more) lights on the Christmas tree in front of
the Golden Roof are switched on. At Marktplatz square, the giant
Swarovski crystal tree shines in all its glory. The opening celebrations
will again be staged with an abundance of music, angels,
light and sparkle.
Hungerburg Christmas Market
Fri 22 Nov. 2013, 5 pm
The traditional opening of this market up on the Hungerburg
takes place with a magnificent view across the whole city. Visitors
can expect an atmospheric programme accompanied by the
children’s choir.
Christmas Market in Wilten
Mon 25 Nov. 2013, 4 pm
Christmas magic begins in the district of Wilten on 25th November.
Look forward to various arts and crafts, traditional gifts and
many a curiosity at this market.

A spectacular fire show always sets the perfect mood on the
opening day of this market. Excitement builds to the sounds of
international music as the highlight of the evening draws near:

Cumbersomely, the mystical figures struggle forwards in their heavy

Accompanied by shepherds, angels and sheep, the Christ Child makes
his way across Innsbruck in his magnificent carriage. More than
500 children from Innsbruck’s schools provide a joyful atmosphere
that gets the whole family in the Christmas spirit. The festive procession
goes down Maria-Theresien-Straße, Marktgraben, Herzog-
Otto-Straße and Herrengasse and on to the State Theatre (Landestheater),
where all join in to sing “Silent Night”. Admission free!

Christmas melodies from the balconies of the Golden Roof, Weinhaus

Impressive
Fairytale and Giant’s Alley

Set off on an exciting journey through the alleyways of the Old
Town. On a walk through the “enchanted forest” you will encounter
28 life-size characters from fairytales and legends, who all
look on from the historical facades, and three impressive giants.
The daily fairytale performances at the Theatre Wagon in Kiebachgasse
lane delight both young and the young-at-heart. Fantastic
prizes are to be had in the great fairytale competition, in which
every child can paint his or her own favourite fairytale. Card for
painting on is available from the angels at the infor-mation stand
in front of the Ottoburg restaurant in the Old Town.

The Night-watchman Narrates
In the stillness of dawn, the night watchman moves through the dark
alleys of the Old Town. Let him guide you by lantern light - exciting

for energy and, if you wish, a climb up the city tower by night (special
opening time, entrance fee) round off your evening’s adventure.

Celebrate New Year’s Eve just like the grownups – as part of
Children’s New Year’s Eve in Innsbruck, children can do exactly that.
Heaps of fun attractions and play stations will be set up across the
entire Old Town. To top it all off, there will be a fireworks display at
Marktplatz Square at 5 pm.

The centrepiece of the museum is Innsbruck’s giant panoramic
painting (Riesenrundgemälde), which depicts across 1,000 m²
the Tyrolean struggles for freedom of 1809, presented as a fascinating
and breathtaking 360 degree view. The exhibition area,
“Schauplatz Tirol” (scene Tyrol), impresses with some surprising
exhibits.
