Treatment
• Few large-scale studies have been possible due to small
numbers and there are therefore no firm guidelines for the
management of these conditions
• Hemiballismus, hemichorea, athetosis – pharmacological
therapy comprises anti-dopaminergic therapy with typical
and atypical neuroleptics and catecholamine-depleting
agents.
• Dystonia - treatment options may be used alone or in
combination
– Botuline toxin injections have been a major breakthrough in the
management
– Other treatments include benzodiazepines, baclofen,
anticholinergic drugs and dopamine-depleting/blocking agents
