4 Summary <strong>and</strong> conclusions<br />

The end-user survey showed th<strong>at</strong> many installed small-scale solar he<strong>at</strong>ing <strong>and</strong> cooling plants<br />

are not truly pre-engineered. This explains many of the problems with the installed plants<br />

mentioned in the survey.<br />

For example, the evalu<strong>at</strong>ion of the install<strong>at</strong>ion period showed th<strong>at</strong> some install<strong>at</strong>ions have<br />

much too long periods of time for install<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>and</strong> many people involved. The communic<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

between the involved parties seemed to be difficult in some cases (chiller provider, solar<br />

thermal collector provider, installer, planner <strong>and</strong> owner). In some cases the commissioning<br />

didn’t happen <strong>at</strong> all. During oper<strong>at</strong>ion, the range of work for the plant owners reaches from<br />

hardly anything to do (everything runs autom<strong>at</strong>ically) to daily adjustments. The answers<br />

given by the plant owners concerning maintenance show th<strong>at</strong> only some plant owners were<br />

well informed about the main maintenance items of a solar cooling system; the rest<br />

mentioned only parts of the necessary maintenance items or nothing <strong>at</strong> all. In most of the<br />

evalu<strong>at</strong>ed plants, the average investment costs are too high for wh<strong>at</strong> is already possible to<br />

achieve.<br />

Small-scale solar he<strong>at</strong>ing <strong>and</strong> cooling systems can be bought from specialized companies as<br />

complete packages, including the entire solar thermal plant with hydraulics, he<strong>at</strong> storage<br />

tank, absorption or adsorption chiller, he<strong>at</strong> rejection system, possibly cold storage tank <strong>and</strong> a<br />

control system of the whole install<strong>at</strong>ion. The degree of pre-fabric<strong>at</strong>ion varies from supplier to<br />

supplier. In some cases, all pumps are pre-defined depending on the flow r<strong>at</strong>e <strong>and</strong> an<br />

assumed pressure drop, taking distances between components into account. In other cases,<br />

these components need to be sized specifically for each installed system. These preengineered<br />

packages are then connected to he<strong>at</strong>, cold <strong>and</strong> domestic hot w<strong>at</strong>er distribution<br />

systems.<br />

Packages, available on the market, offer different cooling capacities. The number of smallscale<br />

thermally driven chillers available on the market is not vast, often the chosen chiller<br />

represents the starting point for design. The rest of the system is then pre-engineered to fit<br />

the chiller size. For the purpose of choosing the correct size of the package for a given<br />

applic<strong>at</strong>ion, an assessment of the cooling load of the building has to be carried out. System<br />

suppliers help the customer in the planning process or recommend charging a planning<br />

office, to identify the cooling load of the building.<br />

Suppliers of such systems typically have affili<strong>at</strong>ed installers th<strong>at</strong> carry out the install<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

work. The commissioning is then done by the supplying companies themselves, to ensure<br />

proper install<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>and</strong> oper<strong>at</strong>ion of the plant. Many companies offer monitoring <strong>and</strong><br />

optimiz<strong>at</strong>ion processes of the system. Since this is a rel<strong>at</strong>ively new technology, this should<br />
