1 Background<br />

The install<strong>at</strong>ion is loc<strong>at</strong>ed in Zaragoza (Spain) <strong>at</strong> the indoor sports centre of the University of<br />

Zaragoza <strong>and</strong> it is used to cool a gymnasium. This install<strong>at</strong>ion was designed as a<br />

consequence of the overhe<strong>at</strong>ing in the existing solar collectors. In summer, the solar field<br />

was oversized because solar power was higher than needed.<br />

2 System Design<br />

• Reasons for designing the system the way it has been designed<br />

This solar cooling install<strong>at</strong>ion was designed as a consequence of the overhe<strong>at</strong>ing problems<br />

of the existing solar filed used to contribute to the domestic hot w<strong>at</strong>er supply of the building.<br />

In the summer, to solve this problem <strong>and</strong> to use this solar waste energy, the chosen solution<br />

was the install<strong>at</strong>ion of an absorption chiller. Therefore, the solar collector field of the solar<br />

air-conditioning system has 37.5 m 2 of useful area. Problems encountered<br />
