<strong>IEA</strong> SHC Task 38 <strong>Solar</strong> Air Conditioning <strong>and</strong> Refriger<strong>at</strong>ion Subtask A Report, D<strong>at</strong>e: November 2010<br />

1 Background<br />

The office building was renov<strong>at</strong>ed in 2004 <strong>and</strong> the solar cooling device was installed in 2008.<br />

The office façade has a south <strong>and</strong> west orient<strong>at</strong>ion. To reduce the solar gains external<br />

shading devices are installed <strong>at</strong> each glazing. Because of internal gains <strong>and</strong> ventil<strong>at</strong>ion via<br />

windows, active cooling is indispensable. The solar cooling equipment is installed in a so<br />

called “CoolCabin” placed in front of the office. The solar collectors are installed on the roof.<br />

The hybrid cooling tower is placed on the fl<strong>at</strong> roof of the office building. The cooling load of<br />

the office rooms is taken out via ceiling cooling elements.<br />

A closed absorption cycle for gener<strong>at</strong>ing cooling energy is employed. Autonomously solar<br />

thermal gener<strong>at</strong>ed he<strong>at</strong> by high temper<strong>at</strong>ure fl<strong>at</strong> pl<strong>at</strong>e collectors is used to regener<strong>at</strong>e the<br />

process. Within the absorption cooling machine w<strong>at</strong>er is used as refrigerant <strong>and</strong> lithium<br />

bromide is used as solvent. The cold w<strong>at</strong>er gener<strong>at</strong>ed by the absorption cooling machine is<br />

used to cover internal <strong>and</strong> external he<strong>at</strong> gains. In winter the solar collectors are in assistance<br />

to the conventional space he<strong>at</strong>ing. In summer <strong>and</strong> winter the solar gener<strong>at</strong>ed he<strong>at</strong> is stored<br />

in one buffer storage <strong>and</strong> all energy dem<strong>and</strong> is taken out of it. The additional he<strong>at</strong> from the<br />

district he<strong>at</strong>ing is not stored in the tank but directly carried to the space he<strong>at</strong>ing system. A<br />

special applic<strong>at</strong>ion is the direct usage of the hybrid cooling tower for free cooling via chilled<br />

ceilings.<br />
