KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER
Figure 11: Innovation process
If these two processes - the knowledge transfer process and the innovation process - are brought together, the linkages between
them could be multifarious, as the following figure depicts:
Figure 12: Knowledge transfer and innovation process
One the one hand it is hard to understand what these processes actually look like and how they work, considering that the reality
is much more complex than the theoretical mapping. On the other hand it is necessary to be informed about the general processes
which are going on in order to better understand and to better support the needs of the enterprises as well as the requirements of
the research institutions. In the past we tried to answer some of these questions and gained the following results:
Depending on the progress of the innovation process, firms are faced with different problems and due to that reason they have
different needs for external support. One example: In the phase of idea generation they would probably need external persons who
would enhance the creativity process by having a different view on the organization. In the phase of idea acceptation and realization
of ideas more technical support could be needed by creating feasibility studies or testing the first prototypes.
But it is does not only depend on the point in time, the fundamental question whether the enterprise undertakes more basic research
or more applied research projects seems to be relevant as well. Nevertheless, it seems to be logical that in the earlier phases
of the innovation process there should be more intensive contacts with the external partner and therefore more linkages with the
