KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER
The empirical results of a just finished investigation illustrate a slightly different picture. Within this diploma thesis 14 members of
Styrian SMEs were asked concerning external knowledge transfer with research institutions. Answering the question “What are the
most important forms of knowledge transfer?”, they mentioned the following ones as important for them:
Practically the decision of how to work together with external organizations is not quite easy and there are numerous existing
criteria influencing it. Among others, financial resources, the type of problem, the kind of knowledge to be transferred, the industry
sector and personnel resources available are factors to be considered and are restricting parameters. In any case it is essential to find
the appropriate way of co-operating depending on the given requirements and possibilities.
6.3.3 Motivation for knowledge transfer
From literature and practice we know that there are many different motives for transferring knowledge and technologies from
customers and suppliers as well as from research institutions. For the most part the motives depend on the size of the enterprise,
because the bigger the enterprise the more resources are available and the more basic research is needed.
The following table includes the most important motives from the existing literature combined with the results gained from the
qualitative empirical investigation:
