But there is one more interesting aspect shown in the table: it is not only the question of how much knowledge is needed over
time but it is also the question of which type of transfer is appropriate during the different phases of the innovation cycle. As can be
seen in the invention phase, spin-offs are of high importance while at the end more consulting is needed. Under the consideration of
patents and licenses and publications, they all together form the most common transfer forms observed in the practice.
It should be mentioned that not all of the listed transfer possibilities are equally important nor equally appropriate for each type
of firm or each type of problem. Due to the limited resources, especially SMEs are managing co-operation projects in a different way
than bigger enterprises. The following table provides an overview of the broad range of existing transfer forms, whereby the importance
for SMEs is marked within the last column:
