almost 60 %, with <strong>the</strong> value <strong>of</strong> arms exported <strong>to</strong> <strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong> stand<strong>in</strong>g at almost 236 million crowns. 19<br />

The State Statistical Office’s summaries, however, obviously did not (and for many reasons<br />

could not) record all arms supplies <strong>to</strong> <strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong>. <strong>Arms</strong> sales <strong>to</strong> <strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong> and <strong>the</strong> entire share <strong>of</strong> arms<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>to</strong>tal <strong>Czechoslovak</strong> exports <strong>to</strong> <strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong> were thus presumably considerably higher than that<br />

stated <strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficial statistics. 20<br />

Paradoxically, <strong>the</strong> grow<strong>in</strong>g tension <strong>in</strong> Central Europe (and <strong>the</strong><br />

related arms boom <strong>in</strong> <strong>Czechoslovak</strong>ia) and <strong>the</strong> dramatic political-military situation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Far<br />

East (<strong>in</strong>timately connected <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> grow<strong>in</strong>g demands for arms) first stimulated <strong>Czechoslovak</strong><br />

exports <strong>to</strong> <strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong> <strong>to</strong> a record performance, but subsequently led <strong>to</strong> its collapse.<br />

exports figures presented are not representative <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> actual amount (number <strong>of</strong> pieces) <strong>of</strong> commodities, due<br />

<strong>to</strong> chang<strong>in</strong>g prices and <strong>the</strong> Czech crown’s exchange rate. Available statistical materials from <strong>the</strong> State Statistical<br />

Office unfortunately mostly do not present numbers <strong>in</strong> pieces for <strong>in</strong>dividual items. They usually provide<br />

only <strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>tal weight. Such figures <strong>of</strong>ten have very questionable <strong>in</strong>formation value, particularly concern<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

production <strong>of</strong> arms. Actual data concern<strong>in</strong>g numbers stated <strong>in</strong> pieces have <strong>to</strong> be found elsewhere, for example<br />

<strong>in</strong> company archives.<br />

20 Statistical summaries issued by <strong>the</strong> State Statistical Office have <strong>to</strong> be compared <strong>to</strong> data from o<strong>the</strong>r sources,<br />

particularly pert<strong>in</strong>ent documents from <strong>in</strong>dividual company archives.
