Foreword
The EUROPHRAS 2008 conference was made possible through financial support from eight
institutions and a generous donation from Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Mieder. The institutions are: Finnish
Academy of Science and Letters, Federation of Finnish Learned Societies, Emil Öhmann
Foundation, German Academic Exchange Service, European Society of Phraseology, University
of Helsinki, German Department of the University of Helsinki and Modern Language Society in
Helsinki. I would like to express my heartfelt thanks again to all sponsors as well as special
thanks to the European Society of Phraseology and the German Department of the University of
Helsinki for approving the grant for the printing of the essay volume. I am also very grateful to
the other members of the organization committee (Prof. Dr. Irma Hyvärinen, Dr. Antje Heine, Dr.
