ADS are made up of normal police officers armed for emergencies, they are not standing SWAT units. Police officers are in fact supposed to be unarmed on general duty, but many wear guns anyway. The issue
handgun of the New Zealand police has been the 9×19mm Glock 17 since the early 1990s. The ADS units have 5.56×45mm Colt AR-15A1 Model 613 assault rifles and pump-action shotguns for emergencies.
