Dates: June 10 to July 26<br />

Science Projects<br />

o One 3-week project designed for ris<strong>in</strong>g 9 th grade students<br />

o Two 5-week projects designed for ris<strong>in</strong>g 10 th -12 th grade students<br />

o Hands-on<br />

o Typically based <strong>in</strong> environmental science, but other project ideas are welcomed<br />

o Go from beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g to end<br />

Research background materials (read<strong>in</strong>gs and studies)<br />

Develop hypothesis<br />

Develop method to test hypothesis<br />

Collect and analyze data<br />

Draw conclusions<br />

o Presented to panel of scientists at end of summer <strong>in</strong> written and <strong>in</strong> oral form<br />

Group paper compiled dur<strong>in</strong>g f<strong>in</strong>al week<br />

throughout summer students develop their <strong>in</strong>dividual papers<br />

<strong>in</strong>dividual papers used to compile group paper<br />

<strong>in</strong>dividual papers are scored us<strong>in</strong>g a rubric at the end of the summer<br />

Power po<strong>in</strong>t presentation<br />

Student Groups<br />

o ~15 to 20 students per science project group<br />

o Mixed abilities<br />

o 5-week projects - are mixed (10 th , 11 th & 12 th graders can all be <strong>in</strong> same group)<br />

Teacher Responsibilities<br />

o Develop project and paper outl<strong>in</strong>e prior to start of summer<br />

o Assist students <strong>in</strong> the development of the project (we want students develop<strong>in</strong>g the project – not just<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g told what to do next)<br />

o Assist students <strong>in</strong> the writ<strong>in</strong>g of their scientific papers<br />

o Grade papers throughout the summer us<strong>in</strong>g our rubric<br />

o Provide feedback to students and make sure they are mak<strong>in</strong>g revisions based on feedback<br />

o Assist students <strong>in</strong> prepar<strong>in</strong>g their weekly and f<strong>in</strong>al oral presentations<br />

Schedule:<br />

o Spr<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Develop project <strong>in</strong> conjunction with RMSC staff<br />

Project must be fully developed prior to staff tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

o Staff Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

Typically 3 or 4 days of tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g (Thursday, Friday, Monday & Tuesday)<br />

One day dedicated to present<strong>in</strong>g science projects to other staff members<br />

o Senior Week- (Wednesday, Thursday & Friday follow<strong>in</strong>g tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g week)<br />

TBD<br />

o Week #1 – background <strong>in</strong>vestigations, write <strong>in</strong>tro sections of paper and develop methods<br />

o Week #2 – write methods sections, collect data and revise <strong>in</strong>tro & methods<br />

o Week #3 – collect & analyze data and revise <strong>in</strong>tro & methods<br />

o Week #4 – draw conclusions & f<strong>in</strong>alize <strong>in</strong>dividual papers (a lot of writ<strong>in</strong>g & revis<strong>in</strong>g)<br />

o Week #5– compile group papers and work on group presentation<br />
