The <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>n agricultural equipment market is estimated at approximately $919<br />
million. Tractor sales constitute sixty percent of the total agricultural equipment market<br />
followed by combine and baler sales. Five percent of all new agriculture equipment is<br />
produced locally, ninety five percent of all agriculture equipment and parts is sourced<br />
from international markets and at least twenty percent of new equipment is sourced<br />
from the U.S. Used equipment has limited market opportunities.<br />
Agriculture is an important component of the <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>n economy, accounting for<br />
about 15% of GDP, with substantial growth potential. Although 80% of <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>’s<br />
land is used for agriculture, only 15% of that is arable, with the rest used for pastoral and<br />
other purposes.<br />
Compared to the rest of <strong>Africa</strong>, <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong> has by far the most modern, productive and<br />
diverse agricultural economy. Although <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong> is currently experiencing a shortage<br />
of wheat, it remains a net exporter of maize and other agricultural food products and is
