karen davies - 2000
Karen Davies came to the University of
Florida as a freshman from England. She
would leave as one of the most decorated
golfers in program history, a distinction
she still holds to this day. Davies is one of
only six golfers in school history to win an
SEC individual championship, which she
accomplished in 1986 as a sophomore. She
was a three-time All-American who also
helped the Lady Gators to two SEC team titles, in addition to being
a member of back-to-back NCAA Championship teams (1985-86).
Davies also excelled in international competition as she helped the
European team retain the Curtis Cup twice from 1986-88. Davies in
still an active player on the LPGA Tour and has garnered more than
$250,000 in career earnings.
Page dunlap - 1998
Page Dunlap arrived in Gainesville in
1984, following her older brother Scott’s
footsteps to become a Florida golfer. She
made an immediate impact and was
named a two-time All-American, while
also being a member of two-straight NCAA
Championship squads in 1985 and 1986.
The 1986 Lady Gator golf team was the
only team in the history of the program to
win the state, conference and national titles all in the same season.
Dunlap continued to make history in 1986 after being named an
All-Conference selection and becoming the first and only female
golfer in school history to win an individual NCAA Championship.
She also received the Broderick Award for golf in 1986-an award
given annually to the nation’s top female collegiate student-athlete
in each sport.
Mary Hafeman - 1998
Mary Hafeman transferred to the University
of Florida from the University of South
Florida in 1977. Hafeman easily adjusted to
her new surroundings and was named team
captain and MVP two years in a row. She
twice ranked among the top-five amateur
golfers in the country by Golf Digest. In
1980, Hafeman helped the U.S. Team retain
the Curtis Cup with a 13-5 victory over the
Europeans. She played professionally on the LPGA Tour until 1985,
when injuries forced her to retire. In 1987, Hafeman was elected
a member of PGA of America, becoming one of the few woman
professionals in the country at that time. In 2003, she was appointed
Golf Director of the Ocean Hammock GC in Palm Coast, Fla., where
she is considered one of the top-50 female golf instructors in the
nation. Hafeman took her experience to the next level as she was
recently named the new Director of Golf at LPGA International Golf
Courses in Daytona Beach, Fla.
donna Horton - 1978
Donna Horton was the biggest name in the
young history of the women’s golf program
when she arrived on campus from UNC
Greensboro in 1974. Horton would go on to
win the Tucker Invitational during her first
season as a Gator and would follow the win
with three more victories during the 1975
season. However, those accomplishments
paled in comparison to the year she had in
1976. In January, she was named to the U.S. Curtis Cup team (the
female equivalent of the Walker Cup). The Horton-led United States
team defeated the Europeans 11-6 to retain the cup. The high point
of the year came in August when she defeated Marianne Bretton to
win the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship. Horton would go on
to have a 15-year LPGA career before retiring in 1992 with more than
$900,000 in career-earnings.
Suzanne Jackson - 2006
A native of LaGrange, Ga., Jackson was
named UF’s Woman Athlete of the Year in
1974, while also earning team Most Valuable
Player recognition twice. She captured
three collegiate tournament titles before
graduating with a degree in journalism in
1974. Following her college career, Jackson
became an instrumental figure at the LPGA,
earning the rank of Director of Tournament
Operations in 1984. She went on to become one of the first three
women to ever officiate the U.S. Open Men’s Championship, and
she also served as an official at The Masters during her career. In
1996, Jackson was awarded the Patty Berg, named after the founder
of the LPGA and given in acknowledgement of her diplomacy,
sportsmanship, goodwill and contributions to the game. Prior to her
passing in 1998, Jackson was widely regarded as one of the world’s
top experts on the Rules of Golf.
deb Richard - 1995
If there is one name that stands as the bar
by which all other Lady Gators golfers
are measured, that name is Deb Richard.
Richard is the only female golfer in school
history to win multiple SEC titles, which
she did three times in a row (‘82-’84). Her
titles were not the result of luck, as she won
all three by at least three strokes. In 1984,
Richard helped the Lady Gators to the SEC
team title and won the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship. Then
in 1985, as a senior, Richard was named the initial SEC Women’s
Golfer of the Year. She capped off her collegiate tenure by finishing
second in the NCAA Championship and receiving the Broderick
Award for golf. Richard has continued her success on the professional
level where she has earned almost three million dollars during her
17-year LPGA career.
It wasn’t as easy as the year before, but UF took home the
NCAA Championship trophy for a second-straight year,
matching Miami’s back-to-back national titles in 1977-78. To
add icing to the cake, Florida junior Page Dunlap claimed
the individual crown with a one-stroke victory over New
Mexico’s Caroline Keggi and Michelle Estill of Arizona
Teeing Off for The Breakthrough Season
seC ChaMpionship TeaMs
1981, 1982, 1984, 1986, 1987, 1991, 1995
From 1981 to 1987, lady Gator
golfers claimed five of seven SeC
Titles. Also during that reign, the
1983 and 1985 teams each came
in second at the conference
tournament. In addition, lady
Gator golf teams brought home
first-place hardware from two
nCAA national Championships
during the six-year span.
The 1986 team not only won the SEC Title, but also claimed the NCAA Championship.
The 1985-86 team still holds the school record for most tournament titles won in a season
(10). Karen Davies won the SEC individual title as a sophomore.
The 1991 team claimed the program’s fourth SEC Title, as the Lady Gators outplayed the
field by six strokes.
The 1984 Lady Gators claimed the program’s third SEC Title with a six-stroke victory.
The 1987 team successfully defended its SEC Championship Title with a two-stroke
victory to earn back-to-back conference titles.
The 1995 Lady Gator golf team earned UF’s most recent women’s SEC title.
Florida’s lineup of Dina Taylor, Kimberly Little, Sarah Jones, Jeanne-Marie Busuttil
and Ann Pohira each earned All-SEC honors in 1995, an unprecedented feat in league
history. Taylor was crowned the individual SEC medalist, as she shot a 217 (69-76-72)
at the league championships.
lynn Connelly
71-72-68=211 (1981)
Lynn Connelly became the first Lady
Gator to win an SEC Championship
when she captured the title by eight
strokes in 1981. Her win was the largest
margin of victory in any of Florida’s
SEC Championships.
Connelly was one of the leaders on the Florida team which
also captured the championship at the inaugural SEC Women’s
Golf Championships.
74-72-71=217 (1983)
73-73-72=218 (1984)
Deb Richard is the only Florida women’s
golfer to win multiple SEC titles. She
won her first in 1982 and then captured
two more in 1983 and 1984.
Richard recorded a four-stroke win in 1982, while she outplayed
the field in 1983 by three strokes, and captured her third title in
1984 six shots ahead of the competition.
Richard was also the 1984 U.S. Women’s Amateur Champion.
As a senior in 1985, she was named captain of the Lady Gator
golf team and received the Broderick Award as the outstanding
female collegiate golfer. She was the winner of seven
tournaments in her UF career, as well as runner-up at the 1985
NCAA Championships.
karen davies
77-75-69=221 (1986)
Karen Davies narrowly escaped with
her SEC Championship, winning by one
stroke as a sophomore in 1986.
She was a three-time All-America
selection (1986, 87, 88). In 1987,
the season after she won her SEC
Championship, she was named SEC
Player of the Year.
Cheryl Morley
75-68-68=211 (1988)
Cheryl Morley won the 1988 SEC
title with a two-shot margin over the
tournament field.
In Morley’s career as a Lady Gator (1986-
89), she was named All-SEC three times
and All-America all four years of her collegiate career. She was
the first UF women’s golfer to receive All-America honors every
year of her playing career.
In her senior season, Morley battled back from an early season
shoulder injury, which kept her out of the line-up for most of
the fall. But she came back strong, posting top nine individual
finishes in every spring tournament except the NCAA
Championships, where she finished 11th.
As a freshman, Morley was a member of the Lady Gator squad
which captured the 1986 national championship. It was the
second consecutive title for the Florida women’s golf program,
still the only women’s golf program in SEC history to win a
national title.
dina Taylor
69-76-72=217 (1995)
Dina Taylor won her title by the
closest margin of any Lady Gator
SEC Championship medalist. The
win came down to a one-hole playoff
against teammate Jeanne-Marie Busuttil
for Taylor to win her conference
championship in 1995.
In addition, the 1995 team also won the SEC team title to mark
the first time Florida had swept the SEC team and individual
crowns since 1986. Taylor received honorable mention All-
America honors as a freshman in 1993 and as a junior in 1995
by the National Golf Coaches Association. During her 40tournament
career, Taylor finished in the top-10 21 times. Her
career stroke average was 76.73. Taylor’s career low round
was a four under par 68 at the 1993 Ryder/Florida Women’s
Collegiate. Her low tournament also came at the Ryder, when
she finished with an overall score of 214.
Aimee Cho
72-73-71=216 (2003)
Aimee Cho became the second freshman
in UF history to win medalist honors
at the SEC Championships. Cho sank a
30-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to
win the title by one stroke. She shot an
even-par 216 (72-73-71) to win the title,
including a career and tournament-low
one-under-par 71 in windy conditions on
the final day. The freshman was named GolfWorld Player of the
Week after her performance at the SEC Championships. Cho
left the team in July of 2004 to pursue a professional career.
