Getting Started
During orientation week students should complete all items in the “Start Here” folder
in the ANGEL course site under the course materials tab. Completion of the Precourse
Assessment, Student Information Survey, and Course Procedures Quiz are
required before access to the unit one materials will be provided. The first item to be
completed is the Pre-course Assessment. The purpose of the Pre-course
Assessment is to determine the students’ baseline level of knowledge on concept
and principles that will be taught in the course. This is not a graded assessment.
Upon completion of this assessment students will be granted access to the second
required item, the Student Information Survey. Students should answer all
questions on the Student Information Survey completely and honestly so we may
better serve students’ needs. The final required item in the “Start Here” folder will
appear after the first two are completed. The Course Procedures Quiz will cover
processes and procedures outlined in this syllabus. Bonus points will be earned for
these items according to the rules outlined in this syllabus. Note that in order to pass the course
students must earn 800/1000 points including points earned on the final AND students must
earn at least a 70% on the final. If BOTH criteria are not met the student will not pass the
course.
Instructional Videos: Students are REQUIRED to watch ALL course instructional videos.
There are approximately 5 hours of video for each unit. Two week units will have approximately
10 hours of instructional videos. Students are encouraged to begin watching the videos as soon
as they are made available. Students should have printed relevant materials for the unit (study
guide, powerpoint, ASR answer sheet) available while watching the instructional videos.
Videos may be viewed in two different formats in the unit folder on ANGEL course site or they
may be accessed via iTunesU. For those watching videos in ANGEL please pause the video at
the beginning and let it fully load (green bar will move completely to the right) before watching.
This will give the best video and audio. The iTunesU option allows students to download the
videos and watch them from their own computer over and over again, burn them to a CD, USB
drive, or DVD, or transfer them to a video iPod. Complete instructions on how to access videos
BEHP 5001 – Syllabus –April 2012 (rev 03/123/12KM)– Copyright J. Martinez-Diaz & ABA Technologies, Inc. – All rights reserved 10
via I-tunes U can be found under Course Materials on the ANGEL course site.
Students may also listen to the videos via the podcasts posted in the unit folders on the ANGEL
course site. Listening to the videos should be used to supplement and review the material and
should NOT be used in place of watching the instructional videos.
Acquisition ASRs: Acquisition ASRs are Active Student Responding exercises presented in
the video lectures. The instructor will ask a question and the student will have several seconds
to respond by writing their response on the ASR worksheet specific to that unit. The instructor
will also provide the correct answer. Answers to Acquisition ASRs should be typed into ANGEL
after watching the interactive videos and prior to your online session. For units that are two
weeks in length, ASR answers should be entered into ANGEL after watching ALL of the videos
and before the SECOND online meeting for the unit. ASRs must be completed in ANGEL
before access to the unit test will be permitted. Fifteen points per unit (105 total) may be earned
for completing all the Acquisition ASR exercises. Note that points are earned by completing the
Acquisition ASRs, not for correctness. Incorrect answers will not count against your Acquisition
ASR score. Completion of ALL unit ASRs is REQUIRED. Failure to complete ALL ASR
assignments may result in the failure of the course.
Online Meeting Assignment: You must be assigned to an online section and you must attend
the Online Meetings for your assigned section only. You may not attend on-line sections to
which you are not assigned (other than formal make-up sessions). The student is responsible
for assuring his or her own assignment to an online section. This must occur no later than the
3 rd week of classes, since each week without having an assigned section will count as a missed
class. Those who remain unassigned into the 4th week of the course will not pass the course,
having missed more than 3 online classes. When selecting an online meeting, keep in mind
that you are responsible for viewing all videos for the unit PRIOR to the online meeting.
Online meetings: Students must attend a minimum of 7 out of 10 Online Meetings, earning a
total of 35 attendance points to pass the course. Two (2) make-up meetings count towards this
minimum of 7. However, you are strongly encouraged to attend all 10 Online Meetings.
Attendance Bonus: If 10 of 10 online meetings are attended the student will receive an
attendance bonus of 10 points. Make up meetings (up to 2) count toward this bonus.
Participation in Online Instructional Meetings: Five points may be earned for participating in
each of 10 Online Instructional Meetings. Students are expected to attend AND participate in
online meetings. Participation includes asking questions, answering polls, etc. Students logged
in, but not participating during an online meeting will be logged out by the co-instructor and will
not receive credit for the session. If illness or other circumstances keep you from fully
participating in an online meeting please alert the co-instructor to these circumstances by using
the chat or private chat function in the classroom at the beginning of the session.
Missing an Online Meeting: If you miss an instructional Online Meeting, you receive a 0/5 for
that session. You must attend the Online Meetings you are assigned to. You can miss only 3
instructional Online Meetings and still pass the course!!!
Online Make-up Sessions: Two missed instructional Online Meetings may be made-up by
attending one of the designated make-up sessions for that unit. Remember that online meeting
weeks run Tuesday through Monday for each unit. So if you miss your online meeting you must
attend a Make-up meeting BFORE the end of the unit week. Detailed instructions regarding how
to reserve a spot and attend a make-up session will be posted on the ANGEL course site, in the
online meeting folder, under the course materials tab. Attendance points will be earned for
make-up meetings attended for up to 2 make-up sessions. Make-up instructional Online
Meetings beyond 2 will count as missed sessions. Make-up meetings will not be held on
University approved holidays unless otherwise noted.
Note: Students who miss in excess of 3 online meetings (earn less than 35 attendance
points), regardless of the reason, will not pass the course!!!
Holidays, Conferences and Online Meeting Cancelations: Online meetings will NOT be held
on University approved holidays. Selected online meetings may also be canceled during certain
conference events (FABA and ABAI). Those students assigned to sessions scheduled to take
place on a University approved holiday or during a conference for which online meetings are
cancelled, will automatically receive attendance points for the meeting even though their
meeting did not take place. Additional online meeting makeup sessions will be offered during
weeks when online meetings are canceled due to a holiday or conference. Students may opt to
attend a make-up meeting without penalty (it will not count toward the limit of 2 make-up
sessions) if they so choose, but are not required to do so. A list of additional makeup meetings
will be made available to students prior to the canceled meeting(s) and students will not be
required to reserve a “seat” to attend one of these special makeup meetings. In the unlikely
event of an unscheduled cancelation of an online meeting, alternative options will be provided
and/or attendance credit will be given.
Online Meeting Attendance: Following each online meeting Co-instructors will enter
attendance points for those students who attended the session into ANGEL. Students should
also track their attendance points in the provided progress record. If attendance points are not
entered by the co-instructor within 24hrs of the online meeting students should contact their coinstructor
and copy caharris@fit.edu. Students who do not attend their regular online session
will receive a zero for that meeting until they attend a make-up session. Questions about
attendance should be directed to the student’s co-instructor.
Tests: All tests and exams are "closed book.” Seven 100-point tests will be administered for
a total of up to 700 points. You may not refer to any book, article, notes, email, or web page
source. You may NOT refer to any course documents or videos including, but not limited to,
those provided in ANGEL. You may NOT have anyone else helping you while taking a test or
receive answers from another individual or provide answers to another student. You may use a
basic calculator. Academic honesty is taken very seriously. Students found to engage in or
suspected of engaging in inappropriate conduct risk failure in the course. Academic honesty
checks will be conducted throughout the term and ALL student’s (not just those suspected of
academic dishonesty) will be notified via email following integrity checks. Students are
encouraged to view their grades in ANGEL after each integrity check notification is received.
Each unit test should be taken in one, uninterrupted sitting. Students may not stop and restart a
test. Time limits apply for all unit tests. See test instructions in ANGEL for more information on
time limits. Students must be able to respond to test items accurately and with fluency (quickly).
Once the time limit is exceeded the test will automatically be submitted even if the test is not
completed. Tests will be based on the objectives covered by the interactive videos and
instructional Online Meeting prior to the test and/or the readings, which are assigned prior to
that time, but may include material covered earlier on. All tests are multiple-choice. Two
alternate forms of each Unit Test are available starting the last Friday at 12:01am of a unit and
through the following Tuesday at 11:59pm of the next Unit. Form A must be taken first and then
form B may be taken if you so choose. You earn the better of the two grades. If taking both
versions of the exam you must complete BOTH versions prior to the deadline. If form A is taken
on-time, form B may NOT be taken late for any reason.
Test Bonus: A 3-point bonus is awarded in each unit for taking Test A on time (Up to 24 bonus
points).
NOTE: NO TEST MAY BE COPIED AND/OR PRINTED IN ANY MANNER. NO TEST OR
EXAMINATION (QUESTIONS/ANSWER-SHEET) IS EVER TO BE DUPLICATED OR
REPRODUCED. TEST ITEMS (OTHER THAN ASR FLUENCY DRILL ITEMS) MAY NOT BE
PRINTED, WRITTEN DOWN ON PAPER, TYPED ON A COMPUTER, OR COPIED IN ANY
WAY. ALL TEST MATERIALS ARE AND REMAIN THE PROPERTY OF THE INSTRUCTOR.
COPYING OF TEST ITEMS OR CHEATING ON UNIT TESTS MAY RESULT IN FAILING THE
COURSE ACCORDING TO FLORIDA TECH’S ACADEMIC HONESTY POLICY.
Missed/Late Tests: You must complete all tests. Missed tests should be made up within one
week of original end date for that test. If you must take a test late you do not need to ask for
permission as long as it is taken within one week of the original test end date. For those taking
a unit exam past the test deadline only ONE form of the test (form B) will be available. A
second form of the test will not be available to those taking the test late. BONUS POINTS WILL
NOT BE ASSIGNED TO TESTS TAKEN LATE. If due to an emergency or other unforeseeable
circumstance you must take a test more than 1 week late points will be removed from the total
possible score. That is, tests taken in excess of 1 week late will be docked 10 points per week
past the 1 week deadline (e.g. if you take the test 2 weeks late the highest score you can
receive is a 90). Late tests must be submitted by the unit 7 test deadline. The unit 7 test and
final exams may NOT be taken late.
Participation in Surveys: You will receive bonus points for every available survey that you
participate in up to a maximum of 12 points.
Final Exam: A comprehensive final examination worth 145 points must be completed at the
conclusion of the course and will be proctored via the required Securexam Remote Proctor
(SRP) device. Prior to taking the exam, students are required to take the Securexam practice
test in angel to ensure the device is working properly and must read and follow all exam
instructions. You must complete the entire final exam and score 70% or greater on the
final exam in order to pass the course, even if you have earned 800 or more points before
the final exam. You may take two forms (A and B) of the final exam if you so choose. If both
versions of the final are taken, you earn the better of the two grades. Exam B is optional and
may be taken: 1) if the student scores less than 70% on form A or 2) if after taking form A the
student has not accumulated enough total points in the course. Form A must be taken first. If
you choose to take both forms of the final exam you must wait 24 hours between taking form A
and form B of the exam. If you choose to take both forms of the test BOTH must be taken
before the test deadline. Exam dates are available in the session summary of this syllabus.
Please note, the form A exam deadline is before the form B deadline. Students will NOT be
permitted to take either form of the final exam late for any reason. Please note that illness, or
technical difficulties will not result in an extension of the final exam deadlines. For this reason
students are encouraged to NOT take their final exam on the last day it is offered. The exam(s)
will be available on-line, but the Securexam Remote Proctor Device provided must be used. The
device will authenticate the student’s identity and monitor both the student and the student’s
computer for the entire testing period. More information and final exam instructions will be
distributed at the end of the term. Please read all exam instructions thoroughly.
Final Exams taken outside of the USA: All final exam criteria will be the same for students
living outside the United States. However, International students may have to pay an import tax
fee on the proctoring device or may be required to provide a web camera and microphone for
proctoring of the final exams. Email abaproctor@fit.edu for more information.
*Final Exam Proctor: Legislative action through the Higher Education Opportunity Act requires
that any college offering distance learning courses for credit “…have processes through which
the institution establishes that the student who registers in the distance education…course or
program is the same student who participates in and completes the program…” Sec 49b (20
U.S.C. 199B (ii))
In an effort to comply with the Higher Education Opportunity Act, ensure the credibility of the
ABA online course series, uphold the integrity of the final exam(s) and protect our students we
are now utilizing Securexam Remote Proctor (SRP) for all final exams. For questions about final
exams proctoring please contact abaproctor@fit.edu.
Identity Verification- Students may be asked to verify their identity and/or unannounced, realtime
identity checks conducted one or more times during the term.
Final Grade: Your total earned points for online meeting attendance, ASR entry, test grades
and final exam will be summed. Points for items submitted late will be deducted according to
the rules outlined in this syllabus. Bonus points earned (attendance bonuses, on-time test
bonus, Surveys) will also be summed and added to the total accumulated points. The resulting
number will be divided by the maximum possible points (1000), to give a final percentage in the
course. This course is graded pass/fail. Students are required to accumulate 800 total points
and score a 70% on the final exam to pass the course.
The Passing Criterion of 800 points INCLUDES points earned in the final. Please note that
deduction of points earned in ANGEL for late entry of ASRs or late completion of tests is done
by hand at the end of the term. If assignments are completed late the progress record in
ANGEL may be incorrect until the grade book is updated to include these deductions. For the
most accurate progress record students should indicate on their progress record all points
earned AND any deductions that will be taken, according to the syllabus, for late assignments.
University Policies
Academic Honesty: All forms of academic dishonesty, including cheating, fabrication,
facilitating academic dishonesty and plagiarism are subject to disciplinary action up to and
including suspension or expulsion from the university. Periodic academic integrity checks will
be conducted. Students suspected of academic dishonesty on a unit exam will receive a zero on
that unit test and may face additional disciplinary action. Cheating in the online environment
includes but is not limited to; giving or receiving information during an exam, using unauthorized
material (like notes) during an exam, unauthorized dissemination or receipt of exams, exam
materials, contents, or answer keys, taking an exam for another student or asking someone to
take an exam for you. For complete information about academic dishonesty policies and
definitions please see http://www.fit.edu/current/documents/plagiarism.pdf.
Withdrawal Policy: To withdraw from a course, the student must complete a withdrawal form
within 6 weeks of the course start date. Failure to attend classes or verbal notification to
instructors does not constitute an official withdrawal. Students who withdraw without filing the
proper form will receive a failing grade of F. When a student drops a course on or before the last
day to do so, as shown in the Academic Calendar, the course will not appear on the permanent
academic record. After this date, a W will appear on the permanent record for each dropped
course. Students withdrawing from a course will forfeit all registration and fees paid to the
University for the course. Please note the ABA Online program academic calendar is different
than the on-campus or the extended studies academic calendar. Students are encouraged to
assess their own situation before the withdraw deadline and apply for a withdrawal from the
course if they, for any reason will not be able to satisfactorily complete the course.
Incomplete Policy: Incompletes will be considered on a very limited basis. An “I” is given when
a course cannot be completed because of extraordinary circumstances beyond the student's
control. An “I” indicates that course work is qualitatively satisfactory and there is reasonable
expectancy that completion of the remaining work would result in a passing grade. The student
must submit a signed letter to the ABA office officially requesting an Incomplete. In addition the
student may be required to submit appropriate documentation to verify the life event that
prohibits the on time completion of the course. Examples include a letter from a doctor, death
certificate or obituary. The instructor (co-instructor) must provide a statement of the work to be
completed to the head of the academic unit. Only those students who have a reasonable
likelihood of passing the course based on an assessment of their grades by their co-instructor
will be considered. Those students who are granted an incomplete must complete the work at
the earliest possible time but prior to the beginning of the seventh week of the following term,
unless an earlier deadline is established at the time the “I” is recorded and the student is notified
of this fact. The “I” will automatically become an F in the seventh week unless an approved
waiver has been filed with the Office of the Registrar. Students with incomplete status will only
be permitted to take ONE form of the final exam. In addition, those requesting an incomplete
may NOT begin the next course in the series until the previous course is completed.
RECOMMENDATIONS FOR SUCCESS IN CLASS (READ THOROUGHLY)!
This syllabus will serve as our “contract” for the course. It explains, as clearly as possible, all of the
requirements for this course. As such, it is expected that you will be familiar with this syllabus and keep it
for reference throughout the term. For each Unit, follow these steps:
A. Print and Familiarize:
1. If you did not purchase the Course Handbook, print all documents that are part of the Instructional
Handbook (provided on ANGEL ) as they are posted. Keep all documents in a 2-inch, or 3-ring
binders. Separate sections by Unit.
2. Prior to watching the interactive videos, familiarize yourself with the Study Guide, PowerPoint
slides, and “Acquisition ASR” Sheets that will be covered in that interactive video for that
Instructional Unit.
B. Watch and participate in the Webcasts (unit videos) by completing the Acquisition ASRs
NOTE: Each Instructional Unit is broken down into several interactive videos by Study Guide
Objectives.
1. Plan to start watching an interactive video as close to the first date listed for that unit as possible.
2. When you watch the interactive video, actively respond by writing down the key words in the Guided
Notes in the corresponding Study Guide. If you miss any key words, you can look them up in the
PowerPoint slides after completing the interactive video.
3. Take additional notes. “Examples” and “non-examples” are particularly helpful.
4. You should take a break after each segment. You may do related reading assignments.
5. Watching about one hour each day works better than watching for five hours straight.
6. If you find yourself drifting, stop viewing the interactive video and log-in at a later time.
7. During the interactive video, respond to each of the Active Student Responding exercises in the
Acquisition ASR Sheet (many are provided in the PowerPoint slides). Feedback is provided on the
interactive video.
8. After completing the Acquisition ASR Sheet, please enter your responses on ANGEL. Please do not
enter your ASR answers into ANGEL until you have completed ALL the ASR.
C. Reading Assignments & ASR Fluency Drill (Prior to Online Meeting with Co-Instructor):
1. After finishing watching a segment or the whole interactive video, complete your reading
assignment.
2. Relate the reading assignments to the objectives in the Study Guides.
3. Refer to and review the Study Guides and PowerPoint slides while reading.
4. Take the Unit ASR Fluency Drill. Review your results (feedback is provided instantly). Your data will
be used by your co-instructor to determine what needs to be emphasized during the Online Meeting
for that unit.
5. Prepare questions to ask the co-instructor during the online instructional meeting.
D. Instructional Online Meeting with Co-Instructor:
1. Prior to the first Online Meeting, get a headset for your computer
2. Log-on to the Adobe Connect Online Meeting at least 3 minutes before the start time BUT NO
MORE THAN 5 MINUTES BEFORE THE START TIME.
3. Actively participate in the instructional Online Meeting with the co-instructor by asking and
answering questions and “polls”.
E. Focus on Fluency in a Cumulative Manner:
Learn the material in each Unit to fluency. Make up flashcards for the key terms. Have someone drill
you several times per week. (SAFMEDS) not just on the Unit you are on, but on all previous Units.
F. Unit Tests:
1. Take each Unit Test on the first scheduled day if possible. If not, take on the second day. Then, go
back and study the material you missed and then take the second test. Take both forms of each test
if time permits (you get the higher of the two grades and you learn more).
2. Tests are to be done on time! If you miss a test, schedule a make-up within one week.
G. Email your assigned co-instructor or post on the discussing board any questions or concerns.
H. Actively participate in the Discussion Board for the course!
