Tip of the Month (Grades K - 2)
To help students maintain
control when practicing volleying,
balloons are used as
opposed to beach or volleyballs.
The balloons serve as
a great way for students to
develop their object manipulative
skills as well as improve
their tracking abilities.
Balloons allow for the student
to focus on obtaining
skills such as the forearm
pass and overhead set, that
are essential in the sport of
volleyball. Working with balloons
students can turn their
attention to keeping their
arms flat and hitting underneath
the balloons.
Volleying allows students to
work on movements that are
present in other activities
that utilize a throwing motion.
Standing sideways to a
target, following through
towards, and tracking an
object are all present in
throwing activities.
Tip of the Month (Grades 3 - 4)
Working with beach balls,
3rd and 4th graders have
been practicing the forearm
pass and overhead set. The
flight of a beach ball closely
resembles that of a volley
ball but allows extra time
for students to focus on
executing the correct cues
for the skills.
Forearm Pass Cues:
- Big Hands
- “I don’t know!”
Overhead Set Cues:
- Triangle Hands
- Giraffe Arms
Practicing these motor skills
will help the 3rd grade students
in the PE Central Challenge
as 4th graders.
PE Central Volley Up Challenge
(www.pecentral.org)
Three children stand in a
triangle three giant steps
from each other. The challenge
is to volley a ball 10
times in a row without the
ball hitting the ground. Each
child must contact (volley)
the ball at least twice but
may not strike it twice in a
row.
