Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MEA)<br />

The MEA lists the following indicators <strong>of</strong> ‘human well-being’ linked to ecosystem services:<br />

Security a safe environment; resilience to ecological shocks or stresses<br />

such as droughts, floods, and pests<br />

• secure rights and access to ecosystem services<br />

Basic Materials <strong>for</strong> a ‘Good Life’ • access to resources <strong>for</strong> a viable livelihood (including food and<br />

building materials) or the income to purchase them<br />

Health • adequate food and nutrition<br />

• avoidance <strong>of</strong> disease<br />

• clean and safe drinking water<br />

• clean air<br />

• energy <strong>for</strong> com<strong>for</strong>table temperature control<br />

Good Social Relations • realization <strong>of</strong> aesthetic and recreational values<br />

• ability to express cultural and spiritual values<br />

• opportunity to observe and learn from nature<br />

• development <strong>of</strong> <strong>social</strong> capital<br />

• avoidance <strong>of</strong> tension and conflict over a declining resource<br />

base<br />

Freedom and Choice • the ability to influence decisions regarding ecosystem services<br />

and well-being<br />

T10.2 Indicators <strong>for</strong> Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects<br />

WWF Gold Standard Social Sustainability and Development indicators<br />

(note: the WWF Gold Standard <strong>for</strong> CDM projects currently excludes A/R carbon projects)<br />

Employment and job quality: the job quality indicator depends whether the job is temporary or<br />

permanent (in comparison with the baseline) as well as any job-related Health and Safety (H&S)<br />

<strong>impact</strong>s.<br />

Livelihoods <strong>of</strong> the poor: this indicator is composed <strong>of</strong> various sub-indicators:<br />

• Poverty alleviation: the change in number <strong>of</strong> people living above income poverty line<br />

compared to a baseline.<br />

• Contribution to equitable distribution and additional opportunity <strong>for</strong> disadvantaged sectors:<br />

the indicator combines quantitative - changes in estimated earned income (normalized to<br />

the project’s starting year) compared with the baseline – and qualitative <strong>assessment</strong> -<br />

improved opportunities <strong>for</strong> gender and marginal or excluded <strong>social</strong> groups.<br />
