SOUTHERN Tasmania’s top musicians
are getting ready to pump out a bumper
summer season of music with the third
annual Summer Music In Tolosa Park.
This popular series of free summer
music events will feature an expanded
program, with five live music events presented
from late January and through
February, covering the range of musical
tastes from jazz to rock and classical
to country.
Summer Music In Tolosa Park kicks
off with a special Australia Day celebration
of classic rock and roll. Presented
by a talented summer school of some of
Tasmania’s finest young contemporary
musicians, this inaugural School of Rock
concert in the Tolosa Park Soundshell
will have park patrons well and truly
rocking.
The countdown has
begun to the opening
of the spectacular
Museum of Old and
New Art (MONA) at
Berriedale.
AFTER four years of planning and
construction the biggest private
museum in Australia will be officially
launched on January 21 and
open to the general public from January
22.
To mark the MONA opening
weekend there will be a massive
party on the Moorilla Green with
live bands such as the early UK punk
band, WIRE (UK).
MONA has been built by multimillionaire,
David Walsh, to house
his private art collection estimated
to be worth $100 million, which
will be entirely free for viewing by
members of the public.
The private venture is set to
become one of Tasmania’s tourism
icons, attracting an estimated 200,000
visitors a year.
MONA aims to shock as well as
challenge, inform and entertain. It
is expected to be different from public
galleries because the private collector
has unfettered freedom to
display whatever he likes.
David Walsh describes the museum
as a “secular temple” where he
has had the luxury of creating his
ideal amalgam of everything he
enjoys most in other museums he
has visited around the world.
The grant will be used
one on the Claremont
Claremont Guide
District Leader, Robyn
Midson, said the current
hall is old and rundown
and will be demolished.
The new facility will be
larger and more flexible,
offering an office, three
rooms and a kiosk, in
addition to the hall.
Robyn said the
community as well as
Guides will benefit from
the new building.
“There will be more
facilities that the public
will be able to hire for
days or nights that aren’t
used by the Guides,”
Robyn said.
BUSINESS AS USUAL, SADLY
The season of giving is usually accompanied by a season of
taking without asking – if you’re not careful.
WELL, Christmas time
has come and gone again
and while the majority of
us were out buying presents,
picking up the laybys
and busily recovering
from the consumption of
too much food and perhaps
too much Cold Duck
wine, others of a less
scrupulous nature are concentrating
on taking
what’s not theirs.
Unfortunately, not
everyone appreciates the
value of a hard earned dollar.
So, when a person is
the victim of a theft where
his or her car is broken
into and the laptop,
iPhone or handbag stolen,
it can be hard not to take
it personally.
However, the reality
is that we must not give
our criminal element too
much credit for planning
their enterprises.
Like the polar bear,
Labrador cannot resist a
lamb chop.
So, in the spirit of
Christmas, let’s trim the
FAT and, (hopefully)
without getting the animal
activists all up in
arms, let’s starve the
creature of its tasty
treats.
The creature is always
going to search for food
but if the food is not readily
found and not easily
accessible, they will keep
moving in search of an
easy meal.
Ideally it would be
nice to change the eating
habits of the creature
but instinctively some
creatures will always
crave the easy tasty
treats.
So leaving David
Attenborough behind, the
moral of this story is two
fold. Firstly if you are
unfortunately the victim
of a crime such as a theft
from a motor vehicle, try
not to take it too personally.
It is unlikely you were
specifically targeted and
unfortunately you were
just an indiscriminate victim.
There are however a
few precautions you can
take to reduce the chances
of being a victim (trimming
the FAT).
Don’t leave valuable
and/or attractive items
MORE than 60 City of
Glenorchy primary school
students have been honoured
for their efforts to
promote safety, helping
another and community
pride.
Glenorchy Mayor Adriana
Taylor presented prizes
and certificates of appreciation
in recognition of
achievements by students as
part of the 2010 Junior
Neighbourhood Support
Program.
A Gala Awards Ceremony
was held at Guilford
Young College, Glenorchy
Campus, on November 26.
Sixty students from 15
primary schools were nominated
for displaying positive
behaviours such as
leadership in fundraising
for charities, organising
school activities, mentoring
younger students, sharing,
caring for others,
respectful behaviour and
pitching in to help whenever
there was a need.
The Junior Neighbourhood
Support Program is an
initiative of the Rotary Club
of Moonah and the
Glenorchy Safer Communities
Committee. The program
aims to promote a
sense of pride, safety and
community spirit in students
within their wider
school community.
Ald. Taylor said she was
delighted that all 15 primary
schools in the City of
Glenorchy were again
involved in the program
this year.
in your vehicle and ensure
your vehicle is locked and
preferably parked off the
street in a driveway or
similar.
She told students, parents
and teachers that community
safety is one of the
most important considerations
to achieve and maintain
a healthy, vibrant
Glenorchy.
“Community safety is
really about caring for one
another and looking out for
each other.
“Community Safety is
also about planning ahead,
thinking about how we
build our neighbourhoods,
our community, our city
and our environment.
“We cannot create a
safe community on our
own,” she said.
“It is only through
accepting responsibility
and working together that
we can create real change.”
Like most polar bears
and similar creatures, a
bit of dieting will make
everybody feel a bit better.
MAYOR’S message ADRIANA
The MONA we’ve all waited for
THE long awaited official opening of
the Museum of Old and New Art
(MONA) at Berriedale is almost upon
us.
Everyone in Glenorchy has watched
as this fantastic development has
taken shape and soon we’ll all get a
chance to see inside it first hand.
It is a very exciting time for our
city with the biggest private art and
museum collection in Australia and
it will be all free entry to the general
public from January 22.
There is a special feature about
MONA elsewhere in this month’s
Gazette but I want to take this opportunity
to thank everyone involved in
its creation.
It will be a magnificent cultural
drawcard for our city.
Please also be aware that the first
few days are likely to attract a flood
of interest – so either be prepared for
some traffic delays and queues, or plan
your visit for a little after the initial
rush!
LOTS HAPPENING
AS if the opening of MONA isn’t
enough, our city has a lot of exciting
events and entertainment planned for
January and throughout the year.
The City of Glenorchy is marking
Australia Day on Wednesday 26th January
with a family fun day event, A
Day in the Park, at Tolosa Park.
A Day in the Park is a free family
event where people can catch up with
family and friends in the relaxed and
beautiful surrounds of Tolosa park,
while enjoying an Aussie barbeque or
your own picnic lunch.
There will be live musical entertainment,
including the Glenorchy
City Concert Brass and lots of fun
activities.
The celebrations start at 10.30 a.m.
with a Citizenship Ceremony and the
announcement of the Citizen and
Young Citizen of the Year Awards and
a highlight of the day will be the
“School of Rock” concert with performers
drawn from the Elizabeth College
and Claremont College bands.
We’ve also got a program of Summer
Music In Tolosa Park planned for 2011.
This is a series of five free summer live
music events in one of Tasmania’s premiere
outdoor music venues – the
Tolosa Park Soundshell.
The series starts with the Australia
Day celebrations and continues on
Sunday January 30th with Jazz in the
Park.
On February 20, the Symphony
under the Stars concert also will be
held at Tolosa Park.”
It is a very exciting time for
our city with the biggest
private art and museum
collection in Australia and
it will be all free entry to
the general public from
January 22.
Then on March 27, Moonah will host
a multicultural food event, the Taste
of the World festival. Planning is well
underway for the inaugural festival
with support from many local businesses
and community groups.
The Taste of the World festival will
feature a delicious spread of food stalls,
dancing, music and lots of children’s
activities to keep patrons entertained.
ACTION ON GRAFFITI
SOME people may be wondering at
the progress of Glenorchy City Council’s
Graffiti Management Plan that got
so much media attention earlier this
year.
Unsightly graffiti is one of the most
common issues raised with Aldermen
throughout the year and Council has
been working on a suite of measures to
tackle it.
Graffiti denigrates the appearance
of our City, promotes negative perceptions
of safety and crime in the
area and lowers property values. It is
a serious issue that demands a focused
and sustained effort if we are to achieve
long term benefits.
At our last meeting Council
endorsed in principle the Graffiti Management
Plan, a Graffiti Management
Policy and a Bylaw covering graffiti
but decided a bit more work needs to
be done on the package of measures.
Our focus is mainly on education
and cooperation between Council and
property owners so it is fitting that
we get the plan and policy in place
first before proceeding with the Bylaw.
Once it is in place, the new Management
Plan and other measures will
provide a solid foundation upon which
we can take action to clean up the
City.
The package is modelled on local
government best practice in Australia
and has been developed in broad consultation
with the community. It focuses
on the rapid removal of graffiti,
education and other prevention strategies.
Studies around Australia and elsewhere
have found that the greatest
discouragement to graffiti is for it to
disappear as soon as it appears and
Council will be leading by example by
quickly cleaning up our properties.
We also want to encourage other
levels of Government, Government
businesses such as Aurora and Tasrail
and businesses generally to also act
quickly.
We are taking the time to get this
right but hope to have it all in place in
the coming months.
FORMER Glenorchy
City Alderman, the late
Mary Guy, has been
posthumously recognised
with the Ministers
Life Long Achievement
Award in the
National Disability
Awards.
Glenorchy Mayor
Ald Adriana Taylor,
said Miss Guy was a
tremendous fighter for
people with disabilities.
“No one deserves the
Life Long Achievement
Award more than
Mary,” Ald Taylor said.
“She always saw people
as people first and
fought any sort of discrimination.
Mary was
in control of her own
life and showed an
extraordinary example
of leadership, not just
for people with disabilities,
but for all of us.”
Mary developed
quadriplegia as a result
of polio at age 8 but this
did not stop a lifetime
of advocacy for people
with a disability.
Among her many
achievements was her
key role in securing
Government in-home
support for people with
a disability and new programs
enhancing independence.
From page 1
Larger than most public
galleries in Australia,
MONA has almost 6,000
square metres of gallery
space to showcase
Walsh’s eclectic art collection.
There is also a
reference library in the
original Roundhouse with
his personal collection of
art, architecture, philosophy,
social commentary,
food and wine
books open for public use.
David Walsh describes
his collecting of art as
obsessive. The collection
ranges from ancient
coins to mummy cases.
His contemporary
collection includes a
rarely seen 45m work by
Australian artist Sidney
Nolan, several hot Young
British Artists and top
artists from Europe and
the Americas.
MONA is expected to
attract thousands of local
residents, including many
who do not usually frequent
art galleries.
Business development
manager Mark Wildson,
acknowledges some people
will not like what
they see.
“It is provocative
intellectually but not in
a gratuitous way,” he
said. “It has changed my
perspective on art and its
message. It has made me
see things and question
things from a deeper perspective.”
MONANISM
THE opening exhibition of the Museum of Old
and New Art is Monanism, showcasing David
Walsh’s favourite works.
It will feature a virtually unknown work by
Australian modernist, Sidney Nolan, along with
historically important works by Arthur Boyd and
Charles Blackman.
From the United Kingdom, the Young British
Artists whose works never made it to Australia in
2000 when Charles Satchi’s now infamous
Sensation exhibition was cancelled by the
National Gallery of Australia: Jake and Dinos
Chapman, Mat Collishaw, Jenny Saville, Mark
Quinn and Damian Hirst.
European artists include Wim Delvoye, Jannis
Kounellis, Anselm Kiefer, Julius Popp, Pipilotti
Rist, Erwin Wurm and Jan Fabre.
From the Americas there are Jean-Michel
Basquiat, Gregory Barsamian, Stephen J.
Shanabrook, Jenny Holzer and others. Japanese
artist Masao Okabe will be doing a commissioned
work.
the whole site will provide
employment to 100
people across the brewery,
winery, hospitality
and museum operations.
The management sees
the complementary food
and wine experience as
just as important as the
museum.
In addition to the
restaurant, The Source,
the complex includes a
Museum cafe and a new
wine bar overlooking the
Green. The 3.5 ha site also
incorporates the Moorilla
vineyard, the microbrewery,
Moo Brew and
eight Mona Pavilions for
luxurious self-contained
accommodation.
“We’ve been gearing
up for several years
towards this crescendo,”
Rachael Whitton of Rosetta, 10 years, with her new lily blooms.
The official opening will be
hosted by Tino Carnivale of the
ABC's Gardening Australia program.
Exhibitors from across Tasmania
and interstate will be
showing their finest lilies.
There will also be categories
for roses, gladioli, cut flowers,
pot plants, fruit and vegeta-
Mark said. “We’ve got a
great team in place. The
crew here are ready for
it [the opening]. Bring it
on, they’re looking forward
to the opportunity
to shine and deliver on
it.”
In a suitable build up
to the MONA opening,
the third annual MONA
FOMA festival will present
an array of music,
dance, theatre, performance,
and new media from
January 14-20.
The festival is a mix
of first-time appearances,
festival favourites and
exclusive one-off performances
and it’s mostly
10 — GLENORCHY GAZETTE, JANUARY 2011
On Australia Day, we celebrate what's great about Australia and being Australian.
THE City of Glenorchy is marking our national day on
Wednesday 26th January with an inaugural family fun
day event, ‘A Day in the Park’, at Tolosa Park.
On behalf of Glenorchy City Council, Mayor
Adriana Taylor extends an invitation to residents,
family and friends to join the celebration of our
nationhood.
“Australia Day is an opportunity to reflect on our
achievements as a nation, count our blessings and to
re-commit to making our nation an even better place
for the future,” she said. “On Australia Day we
celebrate our rich diversity, community spirit and
freedom to live fulfilling lives.”
“Whether we are indigenous Australians, were
born here, or are immigrants, we come together as a
unified nation with a bright future before us.”
‘A Day in the Park’ is a free family event where
people can catch up with family and friends in the
Promise of a better life
THE opportunity to become Australian citizens is a
“dream come true” for the Patricio family. West
Moonah residents Raymond and Hazel Patricio and
their two daughters, Incah, 5, and Indee, 3, will be
among the new residents to become Australian
citizens at the Glenorchy Citizenship Ceremony on
Australia Day at Tolosa Park.
Originally from the Philippines, Raymond, came to
Hobart on a sponsored work visa in 2006, with his
wife and eldest daughter following shortly after. Not
knowing what to expect, they quickly acclimatised to
the Australian culture and made new friends.
“The kids love it here, it’s quiet and good for family
[life] here,” Raymond said. “It feels like home,” said
Hazel, though she does miss her family in the
Philippines.
While still valuing their Philippine traditions, the
couple believe very much that if you are in a new
“We’ve learnt to adapt to our second home, it’s a
learning process for us,” Hazel said, adding with a
smile that coming to terms with Aussie slang such as
mossies, arvo and barbie, had been a challenge at
times.
They particularly like and have embraced the
Australian tradition of mateship and helping other
people.
“It’s really a blessing for us to come to Australia,”
Raymond said. “It really is meant for us. We’re very
proud to be Aussies.”
looking forward to becoming Australian
School of Rock
‘A DAY IN THE PARK’ will be
sizzling with live music from
the hottest young bands from
the northern suburbs and
Hobart.
The headline act will be the
JJJ Top 100 unsigned band in
Australia, Kramer Janes, from
Claremont College, who have
developed a strong following in
Tasmania and nationally.
The program will also
showcase other up and
coming bands from Elizabeth
College’s School of Rock and
Claremont College.
The program for Australia
Day is being coordinated by
Greg Souter, Claremont
College music teacher and
Director of the School of Rock.
He promises an entertaining
and family friendly program that will appeal to all
ages.
“People will be surprised when they see how
professional these young people are,” Greg said.
“There is a real young music culture in Hobart
and unless you are involved in it you wouldn’t
know what is out there.”
He says the strong contemporary music
programs at High Schools and Colleges has
fostered a vibrant live music scene where young
people are composing their own music,
experimenting and trying new ideas.
“It will be a great day to see what our young
musicians can do,” Greg said.
One of the musicians featuring on the day is
already on the path to a professional career in
rock music. The lead singer of the Kramer
Janes, Jake Henderson, is heading off overseas
next year to study song writing at the Los
Moved by the beat
PLAYING the West African drum, the Djembe, is
awesome fun, and Mwase Makalani finds it also helps
young people to connect with their feelings and
express their emotions.
For those keen to find their rhythm, he will be
bringing his Djembe drums to ‘A Day in the Park’ to
give some introductory lessons.
Having moved here from Malawi eight years ago,
Mwase coordinates Holyoake’s Drumbeat program,
running workshops in Tasmanian schools and at
select community events.
The key to playing Djembe drums, says Mwase, is
to connect with and express your heartbeat. He says
that just as everyone has their own individual
heartbeat, people have their own rhythm.
Understanding that and respecting differences
between people can help develop tolerance,
acceptance and team work.
“Everyone can have different sounds and when
they play together it sounds good,” Mwase said.
“Everyone has to work together and respect each
others’ opinions.”
The Djembe drum is easy to play and make great
music. It’s very cool. Mwase says young people pick
up the instrument quickly. “Drumming is about feeling,
not thinking,” he said. “The great thing about kids is
that they don’t think too much about it, because when
you are thinking about it you lose the rhythm.”
The Djembe drum is an important part of the
Malawi culture, dance and celebrations. While seeing
himself very much as an Australian, he is proud to be
able to contribute some of the culture and skills from
his first home.
Can’t beat that: Mwase
Makalani teaches his
cultural tradition of djembe
drumming to young
Tasmanians.
TOTAL Gardening
He offers a broad
range of services from
lawn mowing to weed
hedge
He also can do
landscaping, sow new
Shane comes to
the business with
experience in all
aspects of garden
years experience
working at a plant
Shane said.
give it a go.”
The wet and mild
very busy mowing
those infuriatingly
fast growing lawns.
His new rotary hoe
was also put to a lot
of use, particularly in
vegetable patches.
“The rotary hoe is
great for turning over
for vegetable gardens
and digging the
ground for new hedges
or lawns,” Shane said.
“It certainly beats
digging by hand and is
very popular with a
lot of gardeners.”
The warm weather
and long daylight
hours in summer
make it a great time
to spend outside
enjoying your garden.
also be a time when
GLENORCHY GAZETTE, JANUARY 2011 — 15
Poor pet selection will
come back and bite you
A PET is for life and as a
responsible pet owner it
is your commitment to
look after it till its dying
day. Sadly, for many puppies
this is often before
its second birthday. They
suffer “a terminal illness
of being unwanted – failing
to live up to a dream”,
being surrendered or put
down.
According to the 2005-
2006 American Pet Products
Manufacturers Association,
the average
yearly cost of owning a
dog is $1571.
If your dog lives 10
years (and most live
longer), that comes to
$15,710, not allowing for
inflation. The real concern,
however, is the emotional
and physical costs
of dog ownership and how
many owners do not consider
the heartache and
stress poor selection can
cause for owner and pet.
A first-time dog owner
Genetics and breed
standards are good indications
of a dog’s temperament
and personality.
Finding out the
characteristics and traits
of the breed (or dominant
breed in cross breeds) can
enable owners’ insight
into possible behavioural
traits or health issues.
Puppies are hard
responsible owners need
to prioritise and ensure
socialisation with other
people and dogs, household
etiquette, being
home alone, basic commands,
walking on a lead,
control.
Knowing this and
being a responsible owner
by undertaking suitable
training can prevent
behaviour and temperament
problems.
In nearly 17 years as
a veterinary nurse, animal
seen often what effect
poor breed choice, lack
of socialisation, training
on pets and people.
Please think before
you get your puppy. Do
your homework and take
“We have four Heartmoves
groups, 15 walking
groups and have had
great turnouts at the
Come and Try Days,”
Len said.
“In all over 200 people
have participated in
the programs in the past
year and we look forward
to seeing that
number increase further
in 2011.”
As well as gaining
healthy exercise, Len
says participants enjoy
the fun and friendship
that come with the
activities.
“The groups are very
social, participants really
look forward to the
get togethers and many
new friendships have
been formed,” he said.
“And best of all the
programs are free, so
cost need not hold anyone
back from getting
involved.”
