132 <strong>Legends</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Shawangunk.<br />

Early next morning, a neighbor in passing found <strong>the</strong> children alone, and heard <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

story. The two younger were clamoring lustily for <strong>the</strong>ir mamma, while <strong>the</strong> boy was<br />

<strong>of</strong>fering such consolation as he was able. The children were at once sent to <strong>the</strong> house <strong>of</strong><br />

a relative to be cared for, while <strong>the</strong> neighborhood was aroused and search made for Mrs.<br />

Reeves. For three days <strong>the</strong> inhabitants<br />

far and near were ranging <strong>the</strong> woods looking for her, and when <strong>the</strong>y at last found her, she<br />

was exhausted and almost speechless, having lain down to die. One night she climbed to<br />

<strong>the</strong> top <strong>of</strong> a high rock to get out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> reach <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> wolves that were on her track. Here<br />

she was serenaded all night, during which <strong>the</strong>y made many unsuccessful attempts to<br />

reach her; nor did <strong>the</strong>y leave her until <strong>the</strong> dawn <strong>of</strong> day, when <strong>the</strong>y vanished into <strong>the</strong><br />

forest.<br />

SAM’S POINT, OR THE BIG NOSE OF AIOSKAWASTING.<br />

THE traveler in <strong>the</strong> region <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Shawangunk has not failed to notice that remarkable<br />

feature <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mountain known as Sam’s Point. Even when seen at such a distance that<br />

<strong>the</strong> mountain looks like a blue cloud suspended above <strong>the</strong> earth, this promontory stands<br />

out in full relief against <strong>the</strong> sky. The name has its origin in one <strong>of</strong> those quaint legends<br />

with which <strong>the</strong> vicinity abounds. The story as handed down by tradition, and still related<br />

by <strong>the</strong> residents <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> neighborhood, is as follows:<br />
