27 The New Zeal<strong>and</strong> Seafood Industry Council Ltd (SeaFIC) currently has 29 companies<br />
noted as exporters of octopus. Exports of octopus have been relatively constant over<br />
the last 7 years. Figure two below shows the amount of octopus exported <strong>and</strong> its<br />
value. Of note is the most recent year’s data, which has shown a sharp decline in the<br />
amount of octopus exported but a much slighter decline in the value. This indicates a<br />
rise in the export value of octopus. Octopus is generally exported ‘frozen, whole’ with<br />
a small amount exported live. The main market is Australia with other markets<br />
including French Polynesia, Korea, New Caledonia, Tonga, <strong>and</strong> Fiji.<br />
