Morphology, growth, reproduction <strong>and</strong> recruitment<br />

1 Orange perch is easily identified. It is orange in colour fading to silver below with<br />

colour on the sides tending to <strong>for</strong>m horizontal lines. Orange perch have large eyes<br />

<strong>and</strong> attain an average of 20 to 30cm in length reaching a maximum of 45cm. There is<br />

no in<strong>for</strong>mation on the reproduction or recruitment of this <strong>species</strong>.<br />

Spatial <strong>and</strong> temporal distribution <strong>and</strong> key areas (feeding, spawning,<br />

migration)<br />

2 Orange perch is found on the continental shelf <strong>and</strong> slope of New Zeal<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> southern<br />

Australian waters at depths of 200-400m. It is widely distributed within New<br />

Zeal<strong>and</strong>’s EEZ <strong>and</strong> is taken as bycatch in all fisheries management areas (FMAs).<br />

There are areas of local abundance with higher catches evident in FMAs 4 <strong>and</strong> 5.<br />

behaviour.<br />

Associated <strong>species</strong> (bycatch <strong>and</strong> target)<br />

5 Orange perch is taken as bycatch in a large number of fisheries targeting QMS<br />

<strong>species</strong>; particularly the sea perch, squid, <strong>and</strong> silver warehou fisheries. Reported<br />

catch of orange perch in these fisheries is low however <strong>and</strong> analysis of fish discards<br />
