Customary <strong>and</strong> recreational fishery characteristics<br />

15 Large ostrich foot shells have been found in middens around the North Isl<strong>and</strong>,<br />

indicating that it was a food source <strong>for</strong> Mäori. Though there is no data detailing levels<br />

of current customary or recreational catch of this <strong>species</strong>, it is not known to be an<br />

important <strong>species</strong> to either customary or recreational fishers.<br />

Management in<strong>for</strong>mation<br />

16 Large ostrich foot is managed as a Schedule 4C <strong>species</strong>; the Act prohibits the issuing<br />

of fishing permits to target this <strong>species</strong>.<br />

International obligations<br />

17 There are no international obligations specific to large ostrich foot.<br />

Treaty settlement obligations<br />

18 Currently, there are no settlements that specifically identify the large ostrich foot as a<br />

<strong>species</strong> of interest.<br />

19 MFish is <strong>under</strong>taking research to provide in<strong>for</strong>mation on the traditional <strong>and</strong> customary<br />

factors that may need to be considered in the management decision-making process.
