Introduction<br />

1 The large ostrich foot (Struthiolaria papulosa) is in the Struthiolariidae whelk family<br />

that is endemic to New Zeal<strong>and</strong>. The family includes the small ostrich foot<br />

(Struthiolaria vermis) <strong>and</strong> the Stewart Isl<strong>and</strong> sub-<strong>species</strong> Struthiolaria papulosa<br />

gigas.<br />

2 There is no recorded catch <strong>under</strong> the large ostrich foot <strong>species</strong> code (LOF); instead,<br />

the generic whelk code (WHE) has been used.<br />

Biological in<strong>for</strong>mation<br />

Morphology, growth, reproduction <strong>and</strong> recruitment<br />

3 The large ostrich foot has a heavy light reddish brown shell, with prominent knobs<br />

along the edge, a white or yellow lip <strong>and</strong> a small operculum. The large ostrich foot<br />

shell reaches a maximum height of 83mm <strong>and</strong> width up to 48mm.<br />

4 No studies have been published on the growth, reproduction or recruitment of this<br />

<strong>species</strong>.<br />

Distribution <strong>and</strong> habitat<br />

5 The large ostrich foot is found widely throughout New Zeal<strong>and</strong> including around the<br />

Kermadec Isl<strong>and</strong>s. It is common on s<strong>and</strong>y <strong>and</strong> muddy tidal flats, in estuaries <strong>and</strong> on<br />

the open coast, in shallow water. The large ostrich foot is found buried to a depth of 2-<br />

3cm below the surface, near the low tide mark.<br />
