Moorland-Spingarn Research Center at Howard University, the Department of Special
Collections at Stanford University, the Department of Spaial Collations at Boston
University, and the Rare Book, Manuscript, and Spaial Collections Library at Duke
University. In a professional capacity, Jane Stahlhut and Mabel Lee helped me to
navigate the perils of the UC system and its treacherous bureaucracy; personally, they
landed friendship and counsel along the way .
Each of the following friends has enhanced or enriched my life while studying at
Berkeley, and aided in completing this project: Lara Smith, Greg Delaune, Jen Milne,
J. P. Daughton, and Sara Krier. Without them, graduate school would have been a hellish
trip indeed. Finally, I would like to thank my family, namely my parents and
grandparents (Dan and Jean Strain, Ed and Betty Barry, and my academic mentor, the late
Mattie Lou Strain), as well as Uncle Ed, for their constant love and support . All of these
