A joint project <strong>of</strong> Duke Law School and the Nicholas School<br />
<strong>of</strong> the Environment, the Environmental Law and Policy<br />
Clinic operates as a live client clinic out <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>fices in the<br />
Duke Law School building in Durham, N.C. Students work<br />
under direct supervision <strong>of</strong> Clinic Director Ryke<br />
Longest and Supervising Attorney Michelle Nowlin. Longest<br />
worked <strong>for</strong> fourteen years as an environmental en<strong>for</strong>cement<br />
attorney <strong>for</strong> the North Carolina Department <strong>of</strong> Justice prior<br />
to coming to Duke. Nowlin is a joint-degree graduate from<br />
Duke Law School and the Nicholas School, and worked <strong>for</strong><br />
the Southern Environmental Law Center in Chapel Hill <strong>for</strong><br />
13 years prior to returning to Duke.<br />

<strong>Forest</strong> <strong>Trends</strong>’ mission is to maintain, restore, and enhance<br />
<strong>for</strong>ests and connected natural ecosystems, life-sustaining<br />
processes, by promoting incentives stemming from a broad<br />
range <strong>of</strong> ecosystem services and products. Specifically, <strong>Forest</strong><br />
<strong>Trends</strong> seeks to catalyze the development <strong>of</strong> integrated<br />
carbon, water, and biodiversity incentives that deliver real<br />
conservation outcomes and benefits to local communities<br />
and other stewards <strong>of</strong> our natural resources.<br />
<strong>Forest</strong> <strong>Trends</strong> analyzes strategic market and policy issues,<br />
catalyzes connections between producers, communities and<br />
investors, and develops new financial tools to help markets<br />
work <strong>for</strong> conservation and people.<br />

The Katoomba Group, part <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Forest</strong> <strong>Trends</strong> Family <strong>of</strong><br />
initiatives, is an international network <strong>of</strong> individuals working<br />
to improve capacity related to incentives <strong>for</strong> ecosystem<br />
services and products.<br />
The Katoomba Group’s Legal Initiative works to clarify legal<br />
issues and address technical gaps by (1) developing countryspecific<br />
legal and policy in<strong>for</strong>mation, (2) creating and sharing<br />
transactional tools, and (3) providing capacity-building<br />
