Revision and consolidation of basic knowledge of English (grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation) 

Practice and development of language skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing) 

Development of skills for effective use of advanced information and communication technology for 

foreign language learning 

Students upgrade their knowledge and skills in general English language and are able to relate these with 

their knowledge in the professional field of nursing and general health.

Objectives and competences: 

Students revise and consolidate their knowledge of English language systems (grammar, vocabulary, 

pronunciation) and skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing). They are able to communicate in professional 

English of nursing and general health on the basic level. They are able to use advanced information and 

communication technology for foreign language learning. The acquired knowledge enables them to enroll in the 

second year English - obligatory subject. 

Intended learning outcomes: 

Knowledge and understanding: 

Students understand and are able to use English language at intermediate or lower intermediate level (B2 or B1). 

Students understand and are able to use English language in the professional field of nursing and general health 

at the basic level (A2). 

Transferable/Key skills and other attributes: 

Students develop strategies for effective language learning. 

Students develop awareness of the importance of using literature and sources in English language for effective 

study and their own personal and professional development. 

Learning and teaching methods: 

Classroom teaching and learning will be based on the principles of the communicative approach and contentbased 

teaching and learning. Students’ individual work will be based on autonomous study and work (portfolio) 

and on the development of language skills by using advanced information and communication technology.

ANATOMY WITH HISTOLOGY 

Introduction to anatomy and histology. Interrelationship of structure and function. Organs and organ 

systems. Anatomical position and orientation planes in the body. The structure of the cell and tissues. The 

skeleton, bone ligaments, skin, muscles, nerves and brain, senses, endocrine glands, heart and circulatory 

system, respiratory system, gastrointestinal system, genitourinary system, sexual glands. Differentiation of 

cells, tissue types

marrow, nerves, skin and skin glands 

PHYSIOLOGY 

Lectures: homeostasis, cell physiology, action and membrane potential, functioning of muscles, nerves, 

brain, sense organs, endocrine glands, blood and blood cells, heart and circulation, respiratory system, 

kidneys, nutrition and metabolism, digestion, body temperature, basics of reproduction, basics of 

immunology.

PATHOLOGY 

Introduction to pathology, the definition of the disease. Cell adaptation to the environment, correction of 

tissue, acute and chronic inflammation, circulatory disturbances (bleeding, shock, thrombosis, embolism,

ischemia, stroke), genetic disorders, immunity disorders, neoplasms (definition, aetiology, benign and 

malignant tumours), infections. 

Basic methods in pathology, cytological punctures and biopsy. Ethical principles in autopsy, attitudes 

toward death and the dead. Selected topics in special pathology (pneumonia, heart attack, diabetes, 

anaemia, stroke, carcinoma).

Objectives: 

ANATOMY 

Students understand the structure of tissue, organs and organ systems which is necessary for further 

understanding of physiology and pathology. 

PHYSIOLOGY 

Students acquire the lawfulness of functions in the general physiology of human body and basic lawfulness 

of operating of human organism. Students acquire integral and harmonic operation of all important 

organic systems. Students acquire all the lawfulness of homeostasis, namely the connections and mutual 

impacts between internal and external environment of organism. 

PATHOLOGY 

The aim of the course is to acquire the knowledge about the influence of harmful effects of external and 

internal environment on the development of diseases of tissues, organs and organic systems. This is the 

basis for further clinical courses. 


Knowledge and Understanding: 

Understanding of anatomy is necessary for further understanding of operation of individual structures. 

Students understand functional lawfulness of basic organic systems of human body in normal 

circumstances and under the stress. Students acquire physiological lawfulness and their changing when 

influenced by stress, that is physiological system of adaptation in extraordinary conditions. Students 

understand physiological lawfulnesses for preserving harmonic balance and interdependence of organic 

physiological processes. 

Students understand changed structure and operation of organic systems on human body. Students 

acquire physiological lawfulnesses and their changing when influenced by the external and internal 

harmful environment and the system of adaptation in extraordinary conditions.

Students understand lawfulnesses that cause sickness in organs and organic systems. 

Transferable/Key Skills and other attributes: 

The course is focused on acquiring theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of human body 

structure and physiological abilities of individual organic systems and their normal development. 

Theoretical knowledge in the field of physiology of human body is of great applicative value for 

understanding of clinical courses and pathological processes.

Blood flow in circulatory system; blood pressure. 

Heat and temperature, heat flows. Thermography. Energy flow of metabolism. Regulation of body

Simple description of electric and magnetic fields. Basic principles of electrocardiography. Basic properties

isotopes and their applicability in medicine, basic regulations in radiation protection and care of patients 

before and after performing scintigraphic tests. 



After completion of this program the student will be known with most important biological specimens, 

their adequacy for analysis and basic laboratory procedures. 

On completion of this course the student will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of 

what is happening with medicines in our bodies and knowledge about basic pharmacodynamic groups. 

The students will be familiar with use of isotopes techniques and their application in diagnostic 

procedures.

Central meaning as the factor of its existence and residence by treating the absence of health as 

the phenomenon of healthy problems in the sense of the attack on the organism of the individual 

and its embodied means, as the body is not only the instrument of the movement, breathing, but 

also the embodying of individual image about itself which are at the same time also the individual 

social images. 

The starting point of the social position in the relationship to (un) health represents into it 

inscribed social dimension with special emphasis to medicalisation of the society, new theoretical 

approaches of understanding of relations between life conditions, social-economical risks and the 

healthy condition of an individual respectively groups in late-modern societies, empirical 

instruments for measuring the social economical risks and accumulation of them in single social 

groups, differences between social, age and sexual groups with respect to social, material, 

behaviour and working as well as free time factors on health, disciplinary role of medicine and 

political implications of the concept of healthy life style. 

Knowledge of health and disease sociology, its structure and contents enables the acquiring of

The aim of the module is that students learn about different diseases in the field of internal medicine and 

the role and functions of nurses in nursing care of patients with various internal diseases, and it will be able 

to transfer the acquired theoretical knowledge in the clinical environment. 

Students learn: 

cardiovascular disease and care of patients with cardiovascular disease, 

nursing care for internal patients in the internal intensive therapy, 

respiratory disease and nursing care of patients with respiratory diseases 

blood disorders and nursing care of patients with diseases of blood and blood forming organs 

nursing care of patients with endocrine diseases, 

gastrointestinal disorders and nursing care of patients with gastrointestinal disease, 

urinary tract diseases and nursing care of patients with urinary tract diseases,

Tutorial takes place in clinical environment. Students performs tutorial with patients. Students are

Clinical practice is performed on the Paediatric clinic, ORL, Section to infections diseases and fevers of the 

UKC Maribor under the supervision of mentors and faculty coordinator. 

Students individually investigate specific nursing problems of prematurely children and the young and 

treat them according to the process method of nursing care. 

They perform procedures and interventions with new born children, babies, children and adolescents under 

the mentor supervision.

Learn about different mental disorders and acquire peculiarities of nursing care of a patient with mental 

disorder. 

Students acquire mutual influence of biological, sociological and physiological factors with healthy and sick 

people and the importance of medical and educational work in primary, secondary and tertiary health care 

in the field of mental health. 

Students develop humane attitude towards the patients with mental disorder and thus contribute to 

antistigmatisation. 

MENTAL HEALTH 

Students: 

Learn the basic psychopathologic concepts. 

Learn the most often mental disturbances and the irmeaning for the population. 

Learn the specific approaches of the nursing care of patients with mental disturbances. 

Learn to distinguish between primary, secondary and the tertiary prevention on the field of mentald 

isturbances. 

Learn to recognize their role in the improvement of the mental health. 

NEUROLOGY 

Students: 

Learn the elements of topographic anatomy and 

physiology of nerves. 

Are informed about the elements of the clinical images, diagnostic possibilities and therapy at the most 

often neurological diseases with the emphasise on brain-veins, degenerate diseases and brain tumours as 

well as injuries and functional disturbances. 



Students will be able to recognize nursing problems of patients with mental disorder and plan the activities 

of nursing care. 

Students will be familiar with various mental disorders, are able to list and describe. Understand the 

importance of nursing in psychiatry. 


Students will be able to apply the knowledge acquired into the nursing care practice.
