“It dawned on me that
Howard served as a
metaphorical bridge…”
— John caraluzzo
associate professor of mathematics
rEmEmbEring A FriEnd
Howard Green worked at CCFL/FLCC for more than 30 years as an academic
support specialist, peer tutor coordinator and adjunct tennis instructor at the
time of his death on March 1, 2012. Donations in his memory will be used to
replace the benches at the FLCC tennis courts with new ones designed and built by
New Energy Works and Pioneer Millworks.
John Caraluzzo, associate professor of mathematics, recalls Howard’s influence
on his peers and the students he supported: “It dawned on me that in every facet
of his work at the College, Howard served as a metaphorical bridge: A bridge
connecting his students and the knowledge and skills they were trying to attain.
A bridge connecting student tutors and tutees, facilitating their ability to participate
in the teaching/learning process. And a bridge connecting faculty with the peer
tutoring program, an essential element of the student success strategy of many
faculty members.”
Curt and Nani Nehring Bliss
hosted open mic sessions in
Stage 13 on the first Tuesday
of each month from 1999 to 2009. When Curt became the director of the honors studies program,
Curt and CAB began planning one final open mic night in Stage 13 after the date was set for its
in more than 30 acts – several performers are shown here – taking the stage one last time on Feb. 8.
Susan McCarthy, associate professor of nursing,
reacted with surprise when President Barbara Risser
announced her name as the recipient of the third
annual FLCC Spirit Award. In President Risser’s words,
this award honors “… a collective passion on
this campus — a genuine pride in who we are
and the work that we do. We see it reflected
on the faces of the people who have made
this College their life’s work, and they quietly
pass it along to those who follow them.”
Assembly Minority Leader Brian M. Kolb ’71
and his wife, Lauren, hold his Distinguished
Alumni Award plaque. The celebration included
an announcement of a newly created scholarship,
the Brian M. Kolb Leadership Award. Gifts from
several of Brian’s friends established it as a tribute
to a long-time friend of the college and highly
FLCC transferred enough credits from St. Petersburg to complete his
