Meet Samantha Parker ’11, one student
who’s enriching the college community
through excellence, leadership and service
Campus activities: Founding president of International Association
of Business Communicators at Franklin College, assistant residence
hall coordinator for Hoover-Cline, Wave3 vice president and peer tutor.
Most influential professor: “Richard Erable, English professor, and
Ray Begovich, journalism professor, have most impacted my FC
experience. Dr. Erable recognizes my individual potential and pushes
me to succeed in and out of the classroom, and Dr. Begovich’s courses
have been the most thought-provoking, challenging and rewarding of
my college career.”
Most memorable FC moment so far: “During the annual Pulliam School of
Journalism awards banquet, I received the Marilyn A. Leap Scholarship,
which funds a student’s trip to a professional conference. I remember
sitting in the back of the room and hearing my name, but not knowing
why because it was such a surprise. Thanks to the scholarship, I had the
chance to attend IABC’s ‘Communications Rocks’ conference in
Cleveland, Ohio, in October.”
Best life advice ever received: “Speak your mind, even when your voice
shakes.”
Favorite campus hangout: “The Cline Hall porch. My friends and I have
sat and talked there for hours. I have a lot of special memories because
of that porch!”
Favorite things to splurge on: “I’m addicted to coffee, and I make it
every morning, but after a long day, there’s nothing I want to do more
than go splurge on an iced venti soy caramel macchiato from
Starbucks.”
Hobbies: “I love to read — novels, magazines, blogs, pretty much
anything. I also have a passion for being outdoors. I love to canoe,
whitewater raft, camp and bike.”
Five-year plan: “I’ll graduate from FC with a bachelor’s degree in
journalism-public relations and women’s nonprofit management
(an independent major), with a concentration in business. Then,
I’ll pursue a graduate degree at the Center on Philanthropy in
Indianapolis and work in nonprofit management.”
