Trisha Taylor ’04: It’s hard to name just a few.
I had a really great time at college, including
late nights with friends, inside jokes shared by
the softball team and even some funny
moments from my time as an RA. And how
could I forget getting caught in the shower
during one of Elsey Hall’s infamous fire alarm
evacuations! It was also nice to share time at
Franklin with my brother, Casey Taylor ’05.
Jessica (Irrgang) Zepik ’04: My favorite
memories are just the times I shared with
friends. Now that I’m out of college, I realize
what a blessing it was to get to live with my
best friends for four years of my life. Some of
the memories that stick out the most are the
Homecoming festivities, Greek week events
and performing with the FC Dancers.
Anne (Durham) Smith ’05: My husband
attended college elsewhere, but he knew
of the traditions surrounding the Franklin
College Wellhouse. So, in January 2001,
he took me there, slipped a ring on my
finger, dropped to a knee and proposed.
Clint Whitson ’05: The first date I ever had
with my wife, Jennifer Nebesny ’06, was won
through the Delta Gamma Date Auction in
Custer Theatre. The women of Tri Delta
had nominated her as their representative to
be auctioned. When I saw her on stage she
looked very nervous, so I decided to rescue
her. The bidding went back and forth, back
and forth . . . $50, $75, $100. Finally, with one
last attempt, and with the help of several of
my TKE brothers, I shouted, “$200!” All the
other bidders dropped out, and I won.
Our date was dinner at Olive Garden, and we
hit it off right away. That auction was held in
September 2003, and we were married in June
2008. It was certainly a worthy investment!
Laura (Ostermann) Wolf ’05: Some of my
favorite FC memories include meeting my
now-husband, Doug Wolf ’03, wading through
the middle of the “Franklin River” on Dame
Mall, having fun with my ZTA sisters, doing
homework in the grass, getting to meet guest
lecturer Coretta Scott King during a catering
function I worked. Franklin provided so many
wonderful memories that it’s hard to summarize
them; I wouldn’t trade them for anything!
Renee Kean ’06: My favorite FC memory is of
going with all the women in my Delta Gamma
pledge class to Wal-Mart a couple of days after
we received our bids. We picked out fabrics,
paints and sweatshirts to create our first letter
shirts down in the basement of Elsey Hall.
It was amazing how well we all got along
for not having known each other very long.
It helped us to realize that we were in the
right place, with the right people. We were all
pretty much inseparable throughout college,
and we are still close friends.
Noelle Steele ’06: I remember sitting in media
ethics class, watching as professor Joel Cramer
stood up front and took the usual ribbing
about his looking like the mirror image of
musician Eric Clapton. The next day a student
brought in a magazine cover featuring
Clapton so Joel held it up and lifted one
eyebrow to emulate the musician’s exact
expression. The class couldn’t get enough.
Had Joel just squeaked out the first few lines
of “Layla” it would have been complete!
Sarah Coffey ’07: From my first day on campus
to my last day as a student, much of my
college life revolved around great times
shared at Saga. Freshman year was the
renovation period, and many great stories
were shared next to a temporary plywood
wall by the dessert bar. During the subsequent
years I often joined the lunch line at
11 a.m. and then stayed until 2 or 3 p.m.
The socializing seemed to last forever. Every
student complains at one time or another
about the cafeteria food, but after having
graduated and now living on my own I would
take the food back any day so that I could
once again have the wonderful times in Saga.
It was the best “family sit down dinner time”
I could have asked for — one big, happy
Franklin College family!
Megan Cummings ’07: My first Sunday on
campus freshman year, I went to chapel
where I sat beside none other than President
Moseley and his wife, Candace. That made a
big impression on me, knowing they were so
available and visible to the student community.
We chatted for a bit, and it made me feel like
I was an integral part of the campus.
Laura Marcou ’07: Thinking back on my
college memories, I am always reminded of
the day when I moved from Cincinnati and
made Franklin my home. My father was sure
I had found the best school ever when he
witnessed the faculty, staff and students so
efficiently moving all of my things into my
room in a matter of minutes. The generous
spirits and welcoming faces we met that day
are what made Franklin such a wonderful
home for those years. Near the end of my
senior year my dad lost his battle with
cancer. The notes of encouragement from
classmates, cards from faculty and staff
and overall love and support from the FC
community were unbelievable. I couldn’t
believe the number of Franklin faces that
took the time out of their lives to be with
my family for the funeral in Cincinnati.
From the day I moved in, to the day I moved
out, Franklin was such a wonderful home
away from home for me.
Annie Wantz ’07: I loved going to my New
STeP meetings on Thursday mornings as a
freshman. We talked about hard-hitting issues,
and I felt like I had a “family” I could open
up to. My mentor was very understanding and
had great advice. I don’t think my freshman
year would have gone so smoothly without
the support of my New STeP group.
Friends of
Franklin College
Anthony Ankney: I remember my grandfather
taking me to my first college football game
ever, and it was at Franklin College. I remember
I could not wait until Franklin scored because
I was ready for the cannon to go off.
Hank Nuwer: I co-advise the student
newspaper at Franklin College. So recently,
I drove Evan Shields ’10, then one of the
editors, to North Carolina to pick up a
national award he had won for statehouse
reporting. Well, as we gunned along a busy
Ohio highway, I slammed on my brakes and
pulled onto the shoulder. As Evan gaped in
amazement, I slipped between the semis and
plucked a box turtle off the highway. I was
afraid the poor thing was going to get turtle
waxed for sure. Wide-eyed lest I end up with
tire tracks on my white tee shirt, I tucked the
terrapin under my arm like Randy Moss
sprinting for the goal line. I scooted over the
guardrail on the opposite side and scampered
down the embankment to leave Mr. or Ms.
Turtle (we never were formally introduced,
and I am biology-challenged when it comes to
terrapin body parts) on the side of a stream.
When I returned to the car I saw Evan was in
shock. When we returned to Franklin, Evan
told a few people and now I have a nickname,
“I Brake for Turtles.”
