Kenneth Gates ’53 “My memories include going through the registration process with Miss Virsfel Roe, registrar and faculty secretary, and signing the paper saying we would not use alcoholic beverages while at Franklin College. After all, the college motto was Christianity and Culture. But, on that first Saturday night, there I was at the Independent Men’s house with the guys when we heard a big noise over on the campus. Someone said, ‘Oh, it's a meeting of the Privy Council, let’s go over in awhile.’ We did, and there in front of Bryan Hall was a big bonfire, right in the street! It was a farmer's real privy set on fire. Women were watching from the dorm windows, and frat guys were lined up behind the fire, left hands over the shoulder of one another, like a chorus line, right hand out in front with a can, and they were singing ‘Onward Christian Soldiers.’ So much for the first week of Christianity and Culture! I also recall that on the day of final exams, if you missed one, you could be released from the college. But, there was a pretty girl who said, ‘Let’s go study that first hour.’ So I did, with her. Then, later, going up the stairs in Old Main, or ‘The Gut,’ I met students coming down. They asked, ‘Where were you?’ The exam was in the first hour, and I had missed it! I went right up to the office of professor Herr and tried to explain. ‘Did you talk to anyone about the questions?’ ‘No.’ ‘Can you take the exam right now?’ ‘Yes.’ I went and sat in an empty classroom; nobody was ever so relieved to be able to take a final exam!” 34 Michael G. I’m hoping to land a job in Indianapolis after graduation, but I’d like to move down near Atlanta after I’ve established myself in my career.” 35
