GLOSSARY
CDF = California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection
CONTRACT COUNTY = Counties that protect State Responsibility Area
with their fire departments . For providing that protection the
counties receive payment from the state ., and CDF support and
reinforcement as needed for fire suppression . There are six
contract counties : Kern, Los Angeles, Marin, Orange, Santa
Barbara, and Ventura.
' DIRECT PROTECTION = The area protected by an agency with its own
fire protection force.
' FEDERAL ZONE = The direct protection area Of U .S . Forest Service,
Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, Department of
Defense, and Bureau of Indian Affairs. State Responsibility Area
within federal zone is protected by federal agencies . For
providing that protection the federal agencies receive payment
from the state.
LOCAL ZONE = Area in which there is no State Responsibility Area.
In general, this is valley floor and desert land . Fire
protection in local zone is provided by local government
' agencies ; such as, cities, counties, and fire districts, or by
the CDF under contract to local governments.
' LOCAL RESPONSIBILITY FIRE = A fire that did not burn or threaten
to burn natural resources.
STATE RESPONSIBILITY AREA (SRA) = The area designated by the
State Board of Forestry on which the state assumes financial
responsibility for protecting natural resources from damage by
fire.
STATE RESPONSIBILITY WILDFIRE = A fire in SRA which burns or
threatens to burn natural resources.
' STATE ZONE = State Responsibility Area and intermingled islands
of federal land protected by the CDF and contract counties . Most
' federal land in state zone is protected by the CDF under
contracts with federal agencies.
WILDFIRE = Contraction of "wildland fire." This term is used by
' wildland fire protection agencies to indicate a vegetation fire.
Wildfire generally replaces such terms as forest fire, brush
fire, range fire, and grass fire .
