A DELIBERATE LIFE WITH
MATT SMYTHE ’97
Finger Lakes Community College alumnus Matt Smythe ’97 discussed
his independent film, “A Deliberate Life,” an official selection of the
International Fly Fishing Film Festival on Thursday, March 28, at the college.
Smythe is a Canandaigua resident and outdoorsman who blogs at
www.fishingpoet.com. He was joined by photographer Grant Taylor
for a look behind the scenes at the making of the film.
Set primarily against the rugged and breathtaking landscape of Idaho
and Oregon, “A Deliberate Life” explores the stories of five unlikely
friends who share the same love of fly fishing and the outdoors and
their choice to lead a life according to their passions.

On May 16, members of the 1992
FLCC baseball team, which was
FLCC’s first regional championship
team, and Bob Lowden, Director
of Athletics, will be inducted into
the Athletic Hall of Fame. Bob is
a former head baseball coach at FLCC who was awarded the
Northeast District Coach of the Year Award by the National
Junior College Athletic Association in 1992 and 1994. He was
also selected Regional Coach of the Year in 1992 and 1994
and given the Louisville Slugger Coaching Award in 1994.
Lowden led Finger Lakes Community College to regional
titles in 1992 and 1994 and on trips to the NJCAA World
Series in the same years. In 2005, Lowden was named
Mid-State Conference Coach of the Year.
