ARTS FACULTY
BIENNIAL EXHIBITION
Members of the Finger Lakes Community College art faculty presented
an exhibit of their work in the Williams-Insalaco Gallery 34 from
March 28 through April 19.
The opening reception for the Arts Faculty Biennial Exhibition, sponsored
by the FLCC Foundation, included music by Josh Landon of Canandaigua,
an FLCC music student, who performed on the acoustic guitar.
The show offered “a unique opportunity for the college and community
to see what we faculty do as artists,” said Barron Naegel, assistant professor
of art and director of the Williams-Insalaco Gallery 34. “It is interesting
to note that what we teach in the classroom is reflected in, but not
necessarily shown in, what we do on our own. And most importantly
of course, the exhibit shows the richness and diversity that is evident
in our faculty and what they have accomplished.”
Other faculty exhibitors included Liz Brownell, associate professor
of graphic design, Sarah Morgan, assistant professor of art, and adjunct
instructors Elaine Verstraete, David Damico, John Nihart,
Barbara Senglaub ’94, David Ditzel, Margaret Pence
CELEBRATING GENEROSITY
Two area entrepreneurs were recognized for their
support of Finger Lakes Community College at an
event held Friday, May 3.
The FLCC Foundation honored David D. Reh with
its Benefactor Award and Robert Griswold with its
Foundation Award.
David and Bob were the guests of honor at the
Foundation’s first Celebrating Generosity ceremony
held in Stage 14 at the college’s main campus.
The event honors those who have supported FLCC
or the FLCC Foundation through a variety of means.
“These two individuals have worked tirelessly to advance FLCC and its mission,” said
Amy Pauley, executive director of the FLCC Foundation.“It’s important that they know
they’ve made a difference and their efforts are very much appreciated.”
David Reh launched the Victor-based Raytec Group in 1971 and founded two related
companies, Gorbel and Retrotech, the last of which has since changed hands. In 2002
he opened Ravenwood Golf Course in Victor.
He was a member of the Foundation’s board of directors from 1993 to 1999, and served
as chair in his final year. During his tenure, the Foundation purchased the property that
now houses the honors program. More recently he chaired the
Foundation’s capital campaign that has raised more than $3 million.
His personal and corporate philanthropy has included scholarships,
sponsorship of science fairs and golf tournaments, and the Together
We Can campaign.
Appointed by the Ontario County Board of Supervisors, Bob Griswold
served on the FLCC Board of Trustees from 1999 to 2010. He was the
chair, vice chair and secretary and headed the board’s human resources
committee. During his tenure as chair, current president, Dr. Barbara Risser,
was inaugurated, the Foundation received the largest financial gift in its
history, and a new campus center opened in Victor in 2010.
Bob has been recognized for advocating for the construction of the campus
residence halls. He has lobbied for additional resources for the college
on behalf of the Foundation and Board of Trustees and has supported
the FLCC Foundation with personal and corporate philanthropy as
head of Ontario and Trumansburg Telephone Cos. and Finger Lakes
Technologies Group, Inc.
The Foundation and Benefactor awards are sculptures by Wayne Williams,
FLCC professor emeritus of art, who retired in 2003.
The Celebrating Generosity event also included the induction of the
charter members into the Foundation’s Storefront Pioneers Society.
Society members have created endowed funds or named the FLCC
Foundation in their estate plan. They honor the spirit of the college’s
early days and the vision of those who had a hand in creating and
sustaining it.
FLCC WOODSMEN TEAM
SPRING MEET AND CELEBRATION
OF MARTY DODGE
On April 19 and 20, Finger Lakes
Community College celebrated
its woodsmen tradition with another
strong showing by its collegiate and
professional competitors, capped by
a ceremony to honor the man who
started it all in 1974: retired professor
and coach Marty Dodge.
The FLCC men’s team won its 19th
championship title in the 67th Northeast
Collegiate Woodsmen Conclave, a competition among 32 teams representing
14 colleges and universities in the northeastern United States and hosted by FLCC.
The FLCC women’s team came in a close second after winner Colby College.
FLCC’s jack-and-jill team, in which both men and women compete, also
took second behind leader Alfred State.
“The coaching staff could not be more proud of each of our student athletes,”
said Ryan Staychock ’96, head coach of the FLCC woodsmen. “I had a good
feeling about our men’s team when they scheduled additional practices for
themselves over the last few weeks. They truly earned the right to wear
the title of champions.”
The mood at the college over the weekend was further buoyed when alumnus
Dave Jewett ’89 of Pittsford won the Stihl Timbersports Series qualifier,
a professional competition also held at the college Friday. Jewett competed
in the U.S. professional championships in June and will go on to the world
championships at the Porsche Arena in Stuttgart, Germany on October 25-26.
Then, in high spirits, the FLCC team, alumni and supporters feted the legacy
of longtime former coach Marty Dodge with a reception and ceremony on
Saturday night. The woodsmen practice field was named the Marty Dodge
Woodsmen Field and a sign was unveiled following remarks from
Ryan Staychock, David Jewett, Professor Bruce Gilman, FLCC President
Barbara Risser and Athletic Director Bob Lowden.
Marty retired as professor and head woodsmen coach in 2011 but continues
to assist the team and root on students and alumni. He, too, toasted FLCC’s
successful conclave competitors for their individual and team wins.
The next major woodsmen event is the FLCC Logging Sports Competition,
the annual home meet to be held on October 5 on the main campus.
