DECAL Summer Transition Program
Program targets rising Kindergarten students who did not attend
Pre-K or need additional support
ATLANTA, Ga., (April 25, 2012) – Bright from the Start: Georgia Department of Early Care and
Learning has announced that forty-nine child care centers across 18 Georgia counties have qualified to
offer a six-week Summer Transition Program for rising kindergartners who either did not attend
Georgia’s Pre-K or Head Start, or attended but need additional support to be ready for Kindergarten next
Fall.
The six-week high quality instructional program begins on Monday, June 4, 2012, and is targeted for
children whose families are eligible for Child and Parent Services (CAPS) which is administered by the
Department of Human Services. A total of 60 classes will be offered.
“We are pleased to be partnering with these outstanding child care centers and schools in offering this
important support for our State’s youngest learners,” said Bobby Cagle, commissioner of Bright from the
Start: Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning. “These six weeks can potentially make all the
difference in the world for these students as they prepare to enter kindergarten this fall.”
“This is a great opportunity for these young students to refresh their skills and build their confidence
before moving up into kindergarten,” said Susan Adams, assistant commissioner for Georgia’s Pre-K,
part of Bright from the Start: Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning. “Unfortunately funding
for the program is limited so it is targeted for specific counties.”
Funding was targeted for counties based on Georgia's Pre-K waiting list data, county poverty rate and 3rd
grade CRCT scores. All Georgia's Pre-K programs that were in good standing operating in those counties
were eligible to apply. Funding for STP sites was based on the quality of the applications and the number
of children eligible to be served within the program service areas and zip codes.
Programs will be offered at child care centers in Baldwin, Bulloch, Chatham, Clayton, Clinch, DeKalb,
Dougherty, Fulton, Glynn, Hart, Lowndes, Muscogee, Polk, Richmond, Screven, Spalding, Wayne and
Whitfield counties. A complete list of child care centers, their locations and contact information is below.
Questions about the program can be e-mailed to summerschool@decal.ga.gov.
