Player/Coach<br />

Men’s golf coach Buddy Alexander, the 1986 U.S. Amateur Champion, is the only active golf head coach<br />

in the nation to have captured the U.S. Amateur Title.<br />

Men’s basketball head coach Billy Donovan led Providence to the Final Four as a senior and is one of only<br />

two people to ever play in a Final Four, serve as an assistant in a Final Four and as a head coach in a Final<br />

Four.<br />

Rhonda Faehn is the only current Division I coach who represented her country as an athlete in World<br />

Gymnastics and Olympic Gymnastics <strong>com</strong>petition.<br />

While an assistant coach at the University of Maryland, Amanda O’Leary was the second-leading scorer<br />

on the 1993 U.S. World Cup team that repeated as the gold-medal winner at the International Federation<br />

of Women’s Lacrosse Association (IFWLA) Championship. As a player, O’Leary was the MVP of the 1988<br />

NCAA Lacrosse Championships, was named to the NCAA Women’s Lacrosse 25th Anniversary <strong>Team</strong> and<br />

was inducted in 2005 into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame.<br />

While playing at Virginia, Kevin O’Sullivan was the first-team All-ACC catcher in 1991, edging out Jason<br />

Varitek of Georgia Tech, who went on to be<strong>com</strong>e the captain of the 2004 and 2007 World Series champion<br />

Boston Red Sox.<br />

Women’s golf coach Jan Dowling was a member of the inaugural Kent State women’s golf team and was<br />

named the Senior Female Athlete of the Year at Kent State in 2002. She won the 2000 Canadian Amateur<br />

Championships and was a member of the 2002 Canadian World Amateur <strong>Team</strong>.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Butler Did It<br />

Amanda Butler was a four-year starting guard for the Gator Basketball <strong>Team</strong>, leading <strong>Florida</strong> to the 1993<br />

and 1994 NCAA Tournaments, the first two NCAA appearances in program history. When <strong>Florida</strong> earned<br />

the No. 23 spot in the Dec. 8, 2008 Associated Press ranking, Butler became only the sixth woman in the<br />

history of NCAA Division I Basketball to play for and coach the SAME team that earned a top-25 ranking.<br />

Goooolden Girl<br />

Becky Burleigh is the only female coach to lead her team to the NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer title<br />

(1998).<br />

Coming Home<br />

Will Muschamp spent nine years of his childhood in Gainesville, growing up just blocks from Ben Hill Griffin<br />

Stadium on 22nd Street.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Lone Ranger<br />

Mary Wise is the only female head coach in NCAA volleyball history to coach in more than one Final Four.<br />

Familiar Faces<br />

Will Muschamp is certainly no stranger to the SEC or some of the opposing coaches he will face in his<br />

first year in Gainesville. Muschamp has coached at Auburn and LSU and was on the same coaching staff<br />

in Baton Rouge as Nick Saban (Alabama head coach), Derek Dooley (Tennessee head coach) and Jimbo<br />

Fisher (FSU head coach). Muschamp and Fisher share beach property in the Panhandle of <strong>Florida</strong> from<br />

their days at LSU.<br />

Holloway’s Honorees<br />

Track and field coach Mike Holloway has coached an All-American in every single sprint and hurdle event<br />

since joining the Gator staff as an assistant coach in 1995.<br />

Men’s tennis coach Andy Jackson is a descendent of former United States President and War of 18<strong>12</strong> hero<br />

Women’s Tennis head coach Roland Thornqvist, a multilingual native of Stockholm, Sweden, speaks to his<br />

two young daughters only in his native language of Swedish.<br />

<strong>Team</strong> USA<br />

Men’s and women’s head swimming coach Gregg Troy was selected by USA Swimming and the U.S. Olympic<br />

Committee as the head coach for the 20<strong>12</strong> U.S. Olympic Men’s Swim <strong>Team</strong>. Troy joins former Gator<br />

track and field coach Jimmy Carnes (1980) and former Gator gymnastics coach Ernestine Weaver (1980) as<br />

the only three coaches in school history to be the head coach of a U.S. Olympic National <strong>Team</strong>.<br />

Gator Pride<br />

Gator softball head coach Tim Walton carried his softball coaching over to the USSSA <strong>Florida</strong> Pride of the<br />

National Pro Fastpitch league throughout the past two summers. Walton led the Pride to the 2010 NPF<br />

Championship, the team’s first-ever, while the <strong>2011</strong> Pride squad finished as the NPF runner-up.<br />

Champs!<br />

Two current Gator head coaches won a national championship as an athlete: UF softball coach Tim Walton<br />

was the game-winning baseball pitcher in Oklahoma’s 1994 NCAA College World Series title; and UF<br />

lacrosse coach Amanda O’Leary led the 1988 Temple Owls to a 19-0 record and the NCAA Championship.<br />

She also was named the 1988 NCAA Tournament MVP.<br />

Hall of Famer<br />

Amanda O’Leary was inducted in the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2005. She also was named to the<br />

NCAA Women’s Lacrosse 25th Anniversary <strong>Team</strong> in the fall of 2006. She also has been inducted into the<br />

Temple Athletic Hall of Fame and the Southeastern Pennsylvania Lacrosse Hall of Fame.<br />

Baseball Boomers<br />

Under head coach Kevin O’Sullivan, the Gators set a school record with 11 players chosen in the Major<br />

League Baseball Draft in June <strong>2011</strong>. In his four-year tenure, <strong>Florida</strong> has now had 30 players drafted.<br />

Alumni Reunion<br />

Amanda Butler, BS ‘95, MS ‘97 (women’s basketball) and Mike Holloway, ‘00 (track & field) both graduated<br />

from UF. Butler earned a varsity letter as Gator student-athlete in the sport she now coaches.<br />

Now That’s Coaching!<br />

Volleyball coach Mary Wise’s winning percentage at <strong>Florida</strong> entering the <strong>2011</strong> season (.902) is the highest<br />

of any NCAA Division I coach with at least 10 years of experience in volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball,<br />

football and baseball history.<br />

Head men’s basketball coach Billy Donovan joined legendary Kentucky coach Adolph Rupp as the only<br />

other coach in SEC history to guide his program to multiple national titles, doing so in 2006 and 2007.<br />

Man-U<br />

Assistant Soccer Coach Alan Kirkup played for the “world’s most valuable<br />

soccer team, Manchester United Football Club,”¹ from 1972-76.<br />

Romanian Roots<br />

Gator assistant gymnastics coaches, Adrian Burde and Robert Ladanyi, were<br />

teammates on the Romanian Junior National Men’s Gymnastics team.<br />

Harvard Educated<br />

Football’s running backs coach Brian White graduated from Harvard with a<br />

bachelor’s degree in history in 1986.<br />

Offering Head Coach Advice (current assistant coaches who were head<br />

coaches)<br />

• Second-year assistant coach Steve Jungbluth (men’s and women’s swimming)<br />

served as the head coach at Colgate from 2003-2010;<br />

• Alan Kirkup (soccer) headed the women’s soccer programs at Arkansas<br />

(1999-2003), Maryland (1996-99) and Southern Methodist (1986-96)<br />

prior to <strong>com</strong>ing to Gainesville for the 2006 campaign;<br />

• John Pelphrey (men’s basketball) served as head coach for nine seasons,<br />

including five at South Alabama (2002-07) and four at Arkansas (2007-<br />

11), before returning to Gainesville where he was a Gator assistant from<br />

1996-2002.<br />

• Charlie Weis (football) was the head coach at Notre Dame from 2005-09<br />

and joined the Gator coaching staff in <strong>2011</strong><br />

• Dave Boos (volleyball) was the head coach at Ball State for three seasons<br />

before joining the Gator staff in the spring of 2010.<br />

• Associate swimming and diving head coach Martyn Wilby was the<br />

Barbados Olympic <strong>Team</strong> head coach in 2000, where he coached Leah<br />

Martindale-Stancil in her second Olympic appearance.<br />

• Before <strong>com</strong>ing to Gainesville as an assistant softball coach in 2007, Gator<br />

alum, Jenny Gladding was the head coach at Palm Beach Atlantic University.<br />

• Men’s golf assistant John Handrigan was the head men’s and women’s<br />

golf coach at Queens University of Charlotte (2007-09) and the head<br />

men’s coach at Coker College (2003-07) in South Carolina.<br />

• Women’s tennis associate head coach Dave Balogh is a native of Gainesville,<br />

where he earned his undergraduate degree from UF, playing tennis<br />

from 1993-96.<br />

• First-year men’s basketball assistant Matt McCall earned his bachelor’s<br />

and master’s degrees from UF<br />

• Swimming assistant coach Leah Martindale-Stancil is in her third year<br />

as a Gator coach. Stancil was a member of the 2002 <strong>Florida</strong> Gators SEC<br />

Championship team, is the Barbados national record holder, both long<br />

course and short course, in the 50 and 100 free events, which she set at<br />

the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.<br />

Stancil was a <strong>12</strong>-time NCAA<br />

All-American during her four-year<br />

tenure at UF. Stancil graduated<br />

from UF with a BS in 2002 and<br />

her Master’s degree in 2006.<br />

• Associate swimming and diving<br />

head coach Anthony Nesty swam<br />

at UF from 1989-92, earning his<br />

B.A. in 1994.<br />

• Women’s basketball assistant<br />

coach Murriel Page was inducted<br />

into UF’s Athletic Hall of Fame<br />

in 2009, after enjoying an All-<br />

American career from 1994-98.<br />

She was the inaugural pick by the<br />

WNBA’s Washington Mystics franchise in 1998 and enjoyed an 11-year<br />

WNBA career.<br />

Tour Savvy<br />

Women’s golf assistant coach Emily Bastel <strong>com</strong>peted on both the LPGA Tour<br />

(’05,’06,’08) and the Duramed Futures Tour (’04,’06,’09). Bastel was named<br />

the Futures Tour Player of the Year and was the leading money winner in<br />

2007.<br />

Strong Bloodlines<br />

Men’s basketball assistant Matt McCall is the son of three-time football letterwinner<br />

Wayne McCall (1965-67), who is now a prominent Ocala attorney.<br />

Now on Equal Footing<br />

Craig Bell played for fellow Gator assistant baseball coach Brad Weitzel at<br />

both Palm Beach Community College (1986-87) and the University of North<br />

<strong>Florida</strong> (1988-89). <strong>The</strong>y are both in their fifth year on Kevin O’Sullivan’s<br />

coaching staff.<br />

Bringing a Winning Tradition<br />

Assistant softball coach Jennifer Rocha is a graduate of the University of<br />

Oklahoma and played for the Sooners from 1996 to 1998. During her time as<br />

both a player and a graduate assistant coach, she was a part of six consecutive<br />

NCAA Regional appearances, three Big <strong>12</strong> Conference titles, two Big <strong>12</strong><br />

Tournament titles, two WCWS appearances and one national championship.<br />

Since at UF, she has helped the Gators to six straight NCAA Regional<br />

appearances, two SEC regular-season titles, two SEC Tournament titles, four<br />

consecutive WCWS appearances and two trips to the WCWS Championship<br />

Series, most recently in <strong>2011</strong>.<br />

Leaving Behind a Mark<br />

Assistant lacrosse coach Caitlyn McFadden won every major award possible<br />

in her senior season as a midfielder for the 2010 National Champion<br />

Maryland Terrapins. She was named the Tewaaraton Award Winner and<br />

Honda Sports Award Winner (and was a finalist for both awards in 2009),<br />

the ACC Player of the Year and Tournament MVP (also won both conference<br />

awards in 2009), IWLCA National Midfielder of the Year, and the Suzanne<br />

Tyler Award winner, which is awarded to the University of Maryland Female<br />

Athlete of the Year. She was also a two-time IWLCA First-<strong>Team</strong> All-American<br />

in her final two years as a Terp and IWLCA Second-<strong>Team</strong> All-American in her<br />

sophomore year.<br />

In the Record Books<br />

Assistant men’s tennis coach Jeremy Bayon is the all-time leader at Mississippi<br />

State in dual match victories, amassing a <strong>12</strong>0-55 record from 1997-2000<br />

at MSU, where he played under current UF head coach Andy Jackson.<br />

Olympic Golden Gator<br />

Associate swimming and diving head coach Anthony Nesty, who swam at<br />

UF from 1989-92, won the 1988 Olympic Gold Medal in the 100-meter fly.<br />

He served as Surimane’s Head Swimming Coach at the 2008 Olympic Games<br />

and was honored by his native country which selected him to carry the flag<br />

during the opening ceremonies.<br />

More Golden Gators<br />

All three coaches on the lacrosse staff are World Cup gold medalists. Assistant<br />

Coach Caitlyn McFadden was on the 2009 World Cup team along with<br />

fellow Assistant Coach Erica LaGrow, capturing gold. Head coach Amanda<br />

O’Leary won two gold medals as a player, in 1989 and 1993.<br />

And the Oscar Goes to…<br />

Football’s running backs coach Brian White’s sister, Geralyn, won an Oscar<br />

for Best Documentary in 2005 as the producer of “Born into Brothels.”<br />

‘X’ Marks the Spot<br />

Volleyball assistant coach Sally Polhamus was the first volleyball player ever<br />

to be inducted in Xavier’s Athletic Hall of Fame, be<strong>com</strong>ing a member in 2005;<br />

still holds the all-time career record for kills with 1,779 and is fourth in career<br />

digs with 1,338.<br />

Blue-collar Workers<br />

Tight ends coach Derek Lewis got a job as a New Orleans city bus driver after<br />

his NFL career fizzled. He worked for a couple of years as a bus driver before<br />

getting back into football as an intern in the weight room with the Texas<br />

Longhorns. He then worked as a graduate assistant at Texas before spending<br />

four years as the tight ends coach at Minnesota. He joined the Gators prior<br />

to the <strong>2011</strong> season.<br />

Offensive line coach Frank Verducci previously held a job as the coach of<br />

a semi-pro football team in Helsinki, Finland. In one game, his offensive<br />

line was getting hammered by the opponent’s nose guard. <strong>The</strong> owner of<br />

Verducci’s team demanded that Verducci suit up and play, adding that the<br />

opponent’s coach was also their nose guard. So Verducci did suit up, after<br />

negotiating a new contract at halftime that provided medical coverage and<br />

an extra meal each day. He ended up playing the rest of the year.<br />

Cutting His Teeth<br />

Defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson began his coaching career at<br />

Auburn, first as a student assistant then as a graduate assistant, while Will<br />

Muschamp served as Auburn’s defensive coordinator.<br />

• Jeff Demps (Football and Track & Field) shattered the National High<br />

School record in the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials 100-meter dash quarterfinals<br />

with a time of 10.01 (+1.6). He won the 2010 NCAA Outdoor<br />

Championship in the 100m dash at 9.96 (+2.5) and the 60 m dash in both<br />

2010 and <strong>2011</strong> NCAA Indoor Championship.<br />

• Freshman Madison Monserez (Volleyball) trained at the same volleyball<br />

club (Orlando Volleyball Academy) as former Gator greats Sherri Williams<br />

and has seen the most action out of any true freshman on the squad.<br />

• UF Baseball juniors Nolan Fontana and Austin Maddox played together<br />

on the USA U-16 and U-18 National <strong>Team</strong>s. <strong>The</strong> 2008 USA 18-U National<br />

<strong>Team</strong> claimed the silver medal at the World Junior Championships in<br />

Edmonton, Alberta and the 2007 U-16 USA National <strong>Team</strong> that captured<br />

the World Youth Championship in Venezuela<br />

• Juniors Nolan Fontana and Brian Johnson each brought home a silver<br />

medal from the V FISU World University Championships in Tokyo, Japan,<br />

after the 2010 USA Baseball Collegiate National <strong>Team</strong> dropped a 4-3<br />

decision in 10 innings to Cuba for the gold medal on August 7. Fontana<br />

and Johnson were the lone freshmen on the squad. <strong>The</strong>y both played for<br />

the <strong>2011</strong> USA squads as well.<br />

• Women’s Tennis’ Joanna Mather, Alex Cercone and Olivia Janowicz all<br />

<strong>com</strong>peted for the U.S. in the prestigious Maureen Connolly Challenge<br />

a starter for France at the <strong>2011</strong> FIBA U-20 European Championships.<br />

Yeguete posted 6.2 points and a team-high 5.6 rebounds per game as the<br />

• Men’s swimming had three athletes <strong>com</strong>pete for their respective countries<br />

in senior Rodion Davelaar (Netherlands Antilles), junior Sebastien<br />

Rousseau (South Africa) and sophomore Marcin Cieslak (Poland) at the<br />

<strong>2011</strong> FINA World Championships in Shanghai, China. Rousseau also represented<br />

South Africa at the <strong>2011</strong> World University Games in Shenzhen,<br />

China, leading his 800 free relay team to a fourth place finish, swimming<br />

the second leg, and fastest split for his team (1:48.69).<strong>The</strong> junior also<br />

took seventh in the 200 IM, recording a 2:02.56 swim.<br />

• Women’s swimming saw Sara Lajnef of Tunisia and Hilda Luthersdottir<br />

of Iceland take to the pool in Shanghai, China for the <strong>2011</strong> FINA World<br />

the French team at the FIBA U-20 European<br />

Proctor Academy in Andover, N.H., Stephen Alli (football)<br />

decided to graduate high school early and skip his<br />

senior year to attend Gator fall practices a year early.<br />

• Sophomore Scottie Wilbekin (M-Basketball) chose to graduate high<br />

school early and skip his senior year. Wilbekin played his entire freshman<br />

• It was always Holly Pole’s dream to play volleyball at the University of<br />

National 35 Hard-Court Tennis Championships and teamed with Claire to<br />

win a National Mother-Daughter Championship; Sue was a All-American<br />

at UT-Chattanooga and helped the team win the 1978 and 1979 AIAW<br />

National titles; grandfather, Tommy Bartlett, was UF’s men’s basketball<br />

head coach from 1966-73; Tommy played varsity tennis and basketball<br />

at the University of Tennessee (1950-52), was an assistant coach for the<br />

Vols (1962-66) and in 1986 was inducted into UT’s Sports Hall of Fame;<br />

• Isabelle and Marika Lendl (Women’s Golf) – father is Ivan Lendl, a<br />

former World No. 1 professional tennis player who captured eight<br />

Grand Slam singles titles and a member of the International Tennis<br />

Association Hall of Fame<br />

• Taylor McCord (lacrosse) – Father, Paul McCord, played for the<br />

Dallas Cowboys and the Baltimore Ravens, then was an assistant<br />

coach for the Ravens and the Jacksonville Jaguars. He is now an<br />

assistant coach of the Jacksonville University Women’s Lacrosse<br />

team.<br />

• Tyler McCumber (Men’s Golf) - Father Mark is a professional golfer<br />

and has enjoyed 10 wins on the PGA Tour including the 1988 Players<br />

Championship<br />

• Erik Murphy (Men’s Basketball) – father, Jay, played a total of 67<br />

NBA games from 1984-88 with the Los Angeles Clippers and the<br />

Washington Bullets. Jay went on to play overseas in France and<br />

Italy from 1989-95.<br />

• Chris Rainey (Football) – brother, Rod Smart, was a member of the<br />

XFL under the alias “He Hate Me.” He later played in the NFL for<br />

the Philadelphia Eagles, Carolina Panthers and Oakland Raiders<br />

• Sam Robey (Football) – father, Rick, was an All-American basketball<br />

player at Kentucky, winning a national championship in 1978 and<br />

went on to play for the Boston Celtics<br />

• Tyler Thompson (Baseball) – father, Robby, lettered for the Gators<br />

Baseball Draft by the San Francisco Giants. <strong>The</strong> elder Thompson enjoyed<br />

Todd Worrell in the National League Rookie of the Year voting in 1986<br />
