editor’s note
This spring is filled with fun
events for all members. Starting
right away is the Autocross
weekend at Bandimere. This is
a great way to get you and your
car in shape for the season.
Those "S" turns loosen up the
shoulders and the skid pad is
great isometric exercise as well as helping with motion
sickness. The next weekend is the Spring Tour or
"Pre-Parade" Primer Rally. What a great way to see
some new parts of Colorado and get the car out of
the garage. Then, if you missed the first Autocross
or just can't get enough of not going straight, AMR is
hosting one.
For the "out of the car" participation, there is the
April 2009
Corner Workers School. HPR has more corners than
our other tracks and for each DE we will need several
more corner workers. Recruit some volunteers that
would like to spend the day outside and watch the
thrills and spills at the new track.
The first DE at HPR is Sunday, April 24th. I know
many of you have been waiting for this day for a few
years and it is right around the corner. At publication
time, registration was rapidly filling. If you want
to be there for RMR opening day, don't hesitate. We
round out the month with the ever so popular Moab
tour. April is the best time to be in that part of the
country especially when driving a Porsche.
John Mackin, Membership Chair 2009
2009 is shaping up to be an exciting year. April kicks
off the driving season with our Spring Rally and our
Autocross School and Autocross. Also out first Drivers
Ed at High Plains Raceway!
Work on the facilities at the new track is proceeding
at a feverish pace. As I am sure you all know, paving
was completed last fall. Recently some mobile units
were moved in to serve as registration, training and
control facilities. Also tire placement is nearing completion.
Our first Drivers Education at the track will
be April 26th. After just a week registration opened
over 87 people have signed up. Don’t miss out – there
is a cap at 120. So sign up now. It looks like a fun
track to drive!
One of the things the board is wrestling with are the
fees for the new track. Track rental costs for HPR are
more expensive than other tracks in Colorado in order
to retire the debt in a reasonable period of time. Consequently,
you will see that event fees for our Drivers’
Ed events will be higher than last year.
Another big event this year will be the Porsche Parade.
Rocky Mountain Region is hosting Parade 2009
in Keystone from June 29th to July 4th. If you have
not been to a Parade this is an excellent opportunity
to go to one in your own backyard. There will be
many great events, excellent food, and hundreds of
fantastic Porsches to admire in a beautiful mountain
setting. The Parade Planning committee is working on
putting the final details into place. Registration started
early in March but there are still spots left. Again, sign
up soon.
There will be also be many opportunities to volunteer
at the different events both at Parade and at regional
rmrporschenews
events. At Parade working two ‘shifts’ will entitle you
to attend the Volunteer Party where lots of great
Door Prizes are given away (like tires). There will be
events for everyone: Concours, Autocross, TSD Rally,
Gimmick Rally, Tours, and Tech Quiz among others.
Please join us for a great Parade.
If you haven’t renewed your RMR membership for
2009, please do so. Click “Join” on the RMR homepage
and follow the links.
Looking forward to a great 2009 Driving Season. See
you at the next event!
RMR/PCA MEMBER
rmrporschenews
RMR
Communications 2009
This promises to be a busy and exciting year with
the Porsche Parade in Colorado and the new track
opening. The event schedule is very full..
Email is the best way to keep everyone informed
of upcoming events and last minute
schedule changes. To reach the most members,
we will be using the national PCA membership
list. This list includes all members who reside
in the Rocky Mountain Region whether they are
members of RMR or not. It also provides for
email to affiliate members. This means that you
don’t have to depend on the primary member to
forward the email to you.
To make sure you continue to get RMR notices via
email go to the PCA site (www.pca.org). Log in to
your account and check your email address. The
login instructions are at the bottom of the PCA
home page. If you have never logged in before, just
follow the instructions. If you don’t want to receive
the emails, there is a check box where you can opt
out. We will limit emails to club activities that are
of interest to the general membership. (We don’t
want our inboxes to overflow either.)
If you have any problems or questions, drop me an
email at vicepresident@rmrporscheclub.com.

Another year has come and gone. But take heart – the 2009 RMR/AMR driving season
is upon us and we are all excited to have High Plains Raceway as one of our Colorado
tracks. We love that it’s closer to home.
This is an addendum to my 2008 Car Number article found on our club’s website under
the “Info” tab.
In the past, car numbers became stale if the number assigned was not seen/used at either
a track or autocross event for two years. This year, however, the RMR Board has
requested I extend the “stale” rule by one year in hopes that the “inactive” car number(s)
of 2006 will be active in 2009 with a track closer to home. Therefore, if you have not
driven in either an autocross or track event during the 2006, 2007 or 2008 Porsche driving
season, please try and make it to a Porsche autocross or track event in 2009 to keep
your car number active.
If you have any questions, cannot remember your car number, or want to see if your favorite
number is available for your usage, please feel free to e-mail me, Norma Nada, at
sloporsche@aol.com (best way).
Look forward to seeing you at an event in 2009!
Autocross School and Autocross ...
Bandimere Speedway
Saturday, April 4, 2009 ~ Autocross School
Sunday, April 5, 2009 ~ Autocross (Challenge Series Event)
Mark your calendars for this fun and exciting early
season RMR event to be held in the upper parking lot
of Bandimere Speedway. The autocross school is an
event that we encourage you to try whether or not
you plan to autocross or participate in drivers’ education
events in the future. Our excellent club instructors
will work with you while you learn the capabilities
of your Porsche (or other chosen automobile) and
yourself with plenty of driving time through three car
control exercises. Learn about car balance through
two slalom courses, throttle steering around two different
skid pads and how to plan and look ahead while
manipulating your way through a mini autocross
course.
We guarantee one thing - you will leave the autocross
school with a huge smile and will be ready to prove
your new found skills Sunday on the full autocross
course. We also know that the knowledge you gain
of your automobile’s capabilities and the driving tips
from our trained instructors will be directly applicable
to everyday driving and will make you a more alert
and safer driver on the road.
On-line registration will open March 1st and we recommend
early registration for the autocross school as
it is very popular and limited to 65 students. Sign up
early to get in on the action. A Porsche is not required,
however we can only accept SUVs with a
Cayenne badge and no pickups. Convertibles are ok
and the club does have loaner helmets. Please see the
RMR website for additional information on autocross
events and to find the link to Motorsports Registration.
Walk-ins on the day of registration will be available for the
school (space permitting) and also for the autocross on
Sunday but we encourage on-line registration so we can
plan run groups. Also, pre-registration makes the process
flow smoothly and assures we have enough warm beverages
each morning. Registration at the event is by cash
or check only.
Do you have a licensed 16 or 17 year old that no longer
appreciates your insightful driving tips? The autocross
school is a perfect event for them to improve their skills
and get a taste of the motoring bug. Your patience may
be stretched but our instructors are up to the challenge.
If bringing an under 18 to the event, you’ll need to have
a special waiver filled out – check with the registrar.
Fees
"Pre-Parade Primer" TSD Rally
Spring will soon be upon us, and that means it's time
to awaken your Porsche from hibernation and take to
the roads! Be sure also to brush up on your navigation
skills, because this spring's Pre-Parade Primer
TSD Rally is just around the corner.
What makes this season's rally so special? Unless
you've been living in a cave, you already know that
the 54th Porsche Parade will be held in Keystone this
summer. Revised rules and scoring procedures will be
in effect for the Parade Rally, and we'll be using those
same rules for conducting and scoring this rally. That
makes the Pre-Parade Primer Rally the perfect chance
to practice the procedures in your Porsche! When Parade
rolls around, you'll already be an old pro.
Along with various prizes, this Time-Speed-Distance
rally offers the opportunity to score up to 9 points in
your Challenge Series class. This is only the third Challenge
Series event of the year, so don't miss your
chance to get an early leg up on the competition!
10 April 2009
Sunday, April 11, 2009
Article By : Jeremy Rosenberger and Andy Forberg
Rally Master : Lee Sammons
Not familiar with the TSD rally? Not to worry. A Time-
Speed-Distance rally is not a race; rather, the challenge
lies in attempting to navigate a course of public
roads in an exact amount of time--no more, no less.
The course, and thus the "ideal" time, are not known
to the participants in advance; the fun is in trying to
stay on course (and on time) while following the instructions
provided just before the start. But that's
not all--the instructions may be written in such a way
as to keep drivers and navigators on their toes. (We
promise not to trick you. Much.) Everything you need
to know is on the RMR Web site at http://www.rmrporscheclub.com/
(pick "Info" in the menu and look
for the Rally Instructions and Rally General Rules).
Make sure to review the rules before the rally!
If you're not inclined to participate in the competition,
you can still join in the fun by volunteering to work at
a checkpoint or at registration. Again, if you plan to
participate in the Parade Rally as a competitor or volunteer,
this will be good practice. And, of course, volunteers
earn a Challenge Series point!
The fun will begin at Rosie's Diner in Monument, CO.
The Diner is at 411 Highway 105, just off exit 161 on
the west side of I-25. Rosie's serves up a great breakfast,
so be sure to come early. Registration opens at
8:00 AM; the drivers meeting will take place at 8:30
and we'll send the first car off at 9:01. Although the
final destination is a secret, we'll be there by lunch
time. (And if you get truly off course along the way,
your bailout packet will indicate the rendezvous point,
so don't worry!)
Pre-registration via MotorsportReg.com is encouraged
(registration links can be found on the RMR Web site,
or you can go to www.motorsportreg.com directly).
Pre-registration is $40 per car (keep in mind that you'll
need exactly two participants per car, n ot counting
children under 12). Or you can register on the day of
the rally for $45 (cash or check only in this case). While
you may enter any kind of car in the rally, Porsches
are definitely encouraged!
For more information, please contact one of the
event chairs:
Jeremy Rosenberger (jlr4@cornell.edu,
303.478.5385) or
Andy Forberg (daforberg@msn.com).
And while we still have your attention, we'd like to
thank our Rallymaster, Lee Sammons.
See you at the rally!
Topics to be covered will include: use
what happens in a corner, and use of fire
extinguishers.
please RSVP to the event chair, Troy
Nakatani, as early as possible. Also, if you
can and want to assist with the school,
The 26th Annual Exotic Sports Car Show &
Concours d’Elegance
Sunday, June 14th, 9:00 am - 3:00 pm
Arapahoe Community College
5900 S Santa Fe Drive Littleton, Colorado
A Benefit for United
Cerebral Palsy of Colorado
The Exotic Sports Car Show and Concours d’Elegance is one of the largest gatherings
of priceless automobiles in Colorado. Nearly 400 treasured cars from early
classics and collector cars to vintage race cars and current models will be on display.
Many of these incredible cars come out only once a year for this show, to help
the CP children.
Nearly 100 local and regional car clubs, businesses and media sponsors draw more
than 10,000 spectators to generate funds for United Cerebral Palsy of Colorado.
Now in its 26th year, the Exotic Sports Car Show & Concours d’Elegance has become
one of the grandest, most entertaining and most anticipated car shows in Colorado!
To date this spectacular event has raised over $1,000,000 for United Cerebral Palsy
of Colorado’s Creative Options Early Education Centers. These five centers provide
early care, intervention, prevention, support and education services to expectant
mothers and nearly 800 infants, toddlers and pre-school children and their families
each year. Another 750 children are on waiting lists.
The Concours d’Elegance and Exotic Sports Car Show is also a premier opportunity
for Corporate Sponsors to experience tremendous exposure for your company. This
prestigious show reaches a well educated and influential audience of car collectors
and enthusiasts as well as the general public. The kids win and the corporate sponsors
win. Please be a part of it, contact Liz Neafus-Stenzel, Director of Public Relations,
for more information.
The Exotic Sports Car Show & Concours d’Elegance is hosted by: The Rocky Mountain
Region-Porsche Club of America, Rocky Mountain Jaguar Club, Rocky Mountain
Region-Ferrari Club of America, Mercedes-Benz Club of America Mile-High
Section, Looking Glass Corvette Association, Rocky Mountain 356 Porsche Club,
of America-Colorado Region, Rocky Mountain Saab Club of Colorado, Audi Club-
Rocky Mountain Chapter and Mile High Rotary Club.
There are four ways RMR members can support our fundraising:
1) Bring your special cars out to be judged or displayed. You can register directly
using the Cerebral Palsy of Colorado web site at www.cpco.org, click on Special
Events, then Exotic Sports Car Show, and then retrieve the form to register your
car on the following page. This is an RMR/AMR Challenge Series Event.
2) Be a spectator. Bring the family out and enjoy the fabulous array of Porsches,
Jaguars, Ferraris, Corvettes, Mercedes Benz, BMWs, Lotus, Maseratis, as well as
a long list of other marques. Log on to the Cerebral Palsy’s website at
www.cpco.org you will find a coupon offering a $1.00 discount on the $10.00
spectator entrance contribution.
3) Volunteer to help us on the day of the show. The exotic car clubs in Denver
join together to host and run this show so that all of the income can be provided
to help the children. Just send me an email, tomlynns@aol.com or call, 303-819-
0101, if you have a few hours to help with registration, parking cars, help judging
and scoring, or work at the entrance gate.
4) Donate a little extra. An additional $10 per registration would bring in more
than $400 extra from our club. Of course, even if you don’t register a car you can
write a separate check to Cerebral Palsy of Colorado, 801 Yosemite St., Denver,
CO 80230.
HPR Driver Education Event
“Track Initiation Daze”
AKA - 1st DE @ High Plains Raceway
Sunday - April 26, 2009
This No Times drivers’ education event is the first
chance to drive the new High Plains Raceway with
the Rocky Mountain Region of PCA. We have all been
waiting a long time with great anticipation for the
opening of this wonderful “home” track near Byers.
It’s less than an hour from Denver! We expect a large
turnout from all of the RMR members for this “Track
Initiation Daze” and will limit the registration.
Along with the new track comes an increase in track
rental to the club. To help offset these costs for RMR
drivers we will invite drivers from other clubs, driving
other “lesser marques,” to register in the last week
or two of the registration window. This means that
we all need to plan ahead and sign up EARLY! We
will endeavor to have registration open at least a
month before an event.
Registration is available on motorsportreg.com, as
usual, at a rate of $175 for the first driver and $150
There is no substitute. Like you would accept one even if there was.
for the second. We are still in the process of working
out details on the density of cars, and corner worker
requirements.
If you haven’t seen the track, you should visit the High
Plains Raceway web page at http://www.highplainsraceway.com
and take a virtual lap of the track.
Even better, check the schedule, and take a drive to
participate in “tire bundling” at the new track.
Further event details and updates will be available online
through the RMR website. Please contact the
“Track Initiation Daze” Event Chairpersons with any
further questions.
Registration Fees: $175 for one driver, $150 for codriver.
Learning to Drive a New Track (and Remembering an Old Track)
Every year we suffer through the winter months in
anticipation of a new season of PCA driving events.
Many of us “Track Rats” spend the winter working on
our Porsches, making improvements to our cars for
safety and performance. The wise drivers are reading
the driving related books and seeking the advice
of the seasoned drivers to improve their driving performance
on the track.
One of the subjects which comes up amongst drivers
is - How does an experienced driver go about learning
a new track? What are the steps a person should
take to learn a new circuit? I believe there are many
different answers to these questions. However, most
drivers who have had the experience of visiting a new
track and learning how to drive it have similar methods
to tackle the problem.
Professional and amateur drivers learn through “seat
of the pants” or sensory inputs while driving on the
track. They know how the car should feel when cornering
and accelerating down the straight. Most drivers
can also hear when the car is working well and
whether the engine picks up speed through a corner
without even looking at the tachometer!
One of the key points in the process is to prepare
yourself mentally to learn prior to driving on the track.
As simple as this may sound, I have seen many people
who come to a new track and are overwhelmed
with car preparation, registration, etc. causing them
to forget the primary task of learning their way
around the track!
Professional drivers maintain their focus when learning
a new track and will not allow themselves to be
distracted by car problems when practicing and qualifying
on a new circuit. This is a luxury most us may
not have while participating at a PCA DE event.
Personally, I like to show up early at the new track
and make sure the car is ready. When, registration
opens I like to be first in line. Get the paperwork
rmrporschenews
done and ask questions to become familiar with the
facility. Look at the track map and figure out how to
get on and off the track. Then, find where the facilities
are; gas, food, water, bathrooms, etc.
Then I like to go around the pits and talk to everybody
and gather as much information about the track as
possible. Socializing is a big part of any track event.
You can get a lot of information about a place just by
asking people who have been to a particular track before.
Always, have your track map at hand and ask
for tips on how to drive the track the first time. I’ve
never been to a track where the other drivers would
not help each other.
Next, find out when your group is staging and get to
the grid on time. Many drivers like to get into the car
and have a little “quiet time” before going out on the
track. This helps them concentrate 100% on learning
while driving the track the first time. Plan how
you are going to drive through each corner, observing
and placing information into your memory bank.
When given the signal to go, try to relax and concentrate
on getting yourself and the car warmed up
the first couple of laps under the yellow flag. A good
driver will spend the next couple of laps observing
key reference points of each corner and overall landmarks
for orienting themselves on the track.
Brake points, turn-in points, apex points and trackout
points need to be recognized and memorized. The
contour and elevation changes of every point on the
circuit can drastically change the way a driver approaches
a particular corner. Overall track condition
is also an important piece of information. There are
always some places on a road racing circuit where
you do not want to go off for one reason or another.
While watching the pros learning a new track, I have
observed the fastest drivers testing the breakaway
point of their cars on each corner. This is done by
braking adequately when approaching a corner and
stabbing the throttle to see if the track surface has
good traction when applying the throttle.
Alan Fritze, RMR-PCA Chief Driving Instructor
A few laps later, a driver should be refining their turnn
points (most important!) and throttle application to
obtain the best result through each corner. Forget
late braking. Find the point where you can put your
foot down and put the car into a stable four wheel
drift without losing momentum through the turn.
Consistency breeds confidence while driving on the
track. When the driver senses the car is behaving
well as it is being driven around the track, they can
attempt to reduce their lap times by entering the
turns at a slightly higher speed and see if the car has
enough traction to comfortably negotiate the turn
without leaving the track. Sometimes a minor correction
of the turn-in point or apex point can help a
driver go through a corner in a more stable manner
at a greater speed.
Using the tachometer or the speedometer to benchmark
track-out speed and speed at the end of the
straight helps a driver to improve his performance.
An in-car timer is also useful for taking overall lap
times or segment times through certain sections of
the track. Try and take notes as soon as you come
in and record your tach readings before getting involved
in some other task.
Weight transfer points are also important to maximize
the performance of your vehicle through a sequence
of corners. By modulating the brakes, a good
driver can prevent the car from transferring to much
weight to the front of the car when entering a corner.
The driver can then control the amount of
weight transfer to the rear by gradually releasing the
brakes and applying the throttle judiciously to keep
the car from understeering in the turn. This is often
called trail braking and must be practiced to be effective.
in the zone ...
Sean Cridland, RMR-PCA Zone 9 Representative
Things are getting busy all over in Zone 9 and my activity has
picked up as well. The week after the Zone 9 Meeting in Albuquerque,
Sandra and I ventured to New Orleans for the
PCA National Meetings and Zone Rep College. The first day
of meetings was taken up by the Zone Rep College. The college
was led by PCA VP Manny Alban with the guest list being
a literal who’s who of PCA national officers and chairs. It was
said many times during the day that “though you think you
might have been very active in your own region, when you get
to the national level it’s mind-boggling to see how much activity
it takes to make PCA run efficiently and smoothly.” I can
attest to the truth of that statement. I can also attest to the
capabilities of the people working at the National level. It’s
humbling to be in their presence, let alone to be considered a peer. Much of Zone Rep College
covered procedures, financial information, insurance and liability issues, changes to policy, what
to expect as a Zone Rep, and myths and urban legends about PCA.
The first half of the second day was taken up with the actual Zone Rep meeting. No more tutoring,
this was the time to take up the real issues on the Zone Rep list of to-dos. On the discussion
list were items such as Parade, Escape, DE rules, and PCA Car Corrals (nee Porscheplatzes).
After a brief lunch – during which I sat between PCA Insurance Chair Ken Laborde and PCNA representative
Steve Krysil – we went on to the Board of Directors’ meeting.
For Saturday night they arranged for us to be on the bleachers of a couple of the Mardi Gras parades.
It was really amazing to see all the floats and bands. Every band had its own version of a
step! And we caught so MANY beads! To give you an idea of how many beads there were, I
practically got knocked out by an entire package of beads that came from somewhere in the sky!
Even giving them away, we still ended up bringing a lot home. I have to say that the time in New
Orleans was incredibly productive, but also loads of fun. It was hard to believe that we packed
in so much of each in only a two and a half day period.
After New Orleans I flew to upstate NY for my annual “good-son duty.” My parents are 89 and
93 and I go back each year to help relieve my brother and sisters from their regular care schedules.
It was a pretty good couple of weeks with my parents doing as well as can be expected
for those venerable ages. But I was also able to get in a little car-stuff when I was there. My sister
lives in Saratoga Springs, NY which now has a very nice automotive museum.
http://www.saratogaautomuseum.com Though their current main exhibit is centered on much
older cars, their sports and racing collection features a 1935 Maserati V8RI, a 1956 Ferrari Indycar,
and a 1950 Allard J2. Sure, no Porsches, but these were real pieces of art. Besides, I would
get a good dose of Porsche the next day when I drove down to Danbury, Connecticut to the Zone
1 Tech Tactics.
Zone 1 has the tech session of all tech sessions, with the list of speakers coming right out of the
back page of your Panorama. Talks were given by Tech Committee Chair Peter Smith, PCNA rep
Paul Gagliardi, and a host of others with the featured speaker of the day being none other than
the legendary Norbert Singer. The session was held at the Farnbacher-Loles shop http://www.farnbacherloles.com
which just happens to be in the same building and right next door to the Highcroft
Racing shop http://www.patronhighcroftracing.com. What a great day it was. With Zone
1 being the entire Northeast of the USA and Eastern Canada there were many PCA luminaries
on hand, including past-president Prescott Kelly, DE Chair Pete Tremper, Executive Director Vu
Nguyen, VP Manny Alban, (PCA General Council) David and (Safety Guidelines Chair)Arlene Novack
and so on. So it was a good day to learn about Porsches, but also to get to know many of
our national staff people a little bit better.
The next day it was a long and tight flight back to New Mexico and reality. Being a Zone Rep
can be a lot of fun at times, but it’s really about staying on top of the paperwork and keeping
track of the Regions and serving you, the members. Parade registration got my attention early
and many of the regions are starting to thaw out from the winter and get their regular activities
going again. Though the economy is hurting all over, Porsche fans are a dedicated and enthusiastic
bunch with a never-say-never attitude. Hence, I look forward to a busy and productive year
as I start scheduling my visits to the Regions. I look forward to meeting each of you.
See you at an event, Sean
The Porsche Wow
by Dick Badler
I had a scary dream last night. In my dream, I couldn’t sleep. So I padded to the den,
turned on the TV and on came an infomercial. It went something like this:
Hi, Vince here, for the Porsche Wow.
You say you’re bored with driving rice burners and retro muscle cars and semi-obsolete
designs from companies that may not be around to service your warranty? You’re tired
of getting blown away by pimply faced kids in aero-kitted pavement scrapers with giant
trash can exhausts that make them sound like Ferraris? Well, bunkie, your time has
come.
The Porsche Wow. It slices, it dices… through traffic!
Ess-turns making your tires squeal like pigs in a sty? No problem. Our cars corner so hard
you’ll soon have neck muscles that look like you play middle linebacker in the NFL. You
say you’re verging on road rage from the way those German sport-boxes zip by? On
some models we have “launch control.” Switch it on, and you blast off like a Saturn 5
rocket at liftoff.
First the car, itself. Every Porsche Wow comes with 60 years of breeding. And I don’t
mean like with a purebred dog. I mean purebred performance, honed over 60 years on
the racetracks of the world. Does it bite? Only if you enter a corner too fast. Can you
feel it‘s pulse? You can feel your own pulse, racing.
I’m talking about a new type of genetic engineering. Genetic car engineering. You can’t
see it, but you know it’s there. Stomp on the gas. Run through the gears. Excellence is
expected. Nothing even comes close.
And if you go to our website, right now, you’ll find even more great word-smithing, slogans
like “Inner strength,” “A legend in top form,” “Open for enthusiasm” and “Only three
figures describe this feeling.”
How do we do it? We’re the most profitable car company on earth. Maybe the only profitable
car company on earth. We’re actually buying Volkswagen, even though they’re 10
or more times bigger than us.
The secret? Charge extra for everything. You want interior-matching floor mats on your
$87K MSRP basic Carrera S? That’ll be another $140, please.
And we get it. Of course we do. Because we know that you know that speed is a function
of money. How fast do you want to go?
Remember, you’re not just buying a car. You’re buying a lifestyle. We have a whole other
division that sells nothing but clothing, shoes, ties, cufflinks, watches and even suitcases
that are specially sized to fit into our funny little trunks. At prices that compliment our
cars, because it’s not easy to fit that PorscheWow crest on a logo golf ball.
Buy one and you’re a member of the club. A real club. In every city in the US, as well
as all the major markets around the world. Join the club and you can explore that performance
envelope you’ve been dreaming about. From the comfort and safety of a real
race track, where you’re on your own, with no speed limits. No insurance either, but,
hey, that’s the price you pay.
But wait, there’s more. A Porsche Wow SUV called a Cayenne. This pepper is big. And
it’s fast, and it handles well, and it gulps gas, and it costs a lot. It’s a PorscheWow! And,
coming this year, a four-seater, the Panamera. No, not Panera. This stud-muffin comes
out of the oven for family fun, to and from the bakery. Unlike our two-seater and 2+2
sports cars, you can take another couple with you, and I mean full, life-size people, with
real feet. They’ll fit! And they get their own doors!
We can only make this offer because we’re sure you’ll be impressed… and impressing…
at the stoplight, loading groceries in the Whole Foods parking lot, pulling up to valet parking.
Yes, with a PorscheWow the world looks at you. And if you tint your windows they
don’t even have to know you’re looking back. Because that’s what you’ll be doing… in
the rear view mirror….
I woke up in a cold sweat. It’s a dream, I said to myself. It’s only a dream.
Go back to bed. And so I did.
54th Porsche Parade
Keystone, CO - June 29th to July 4th
PARADE COMMITTEE REQUEST by Kathy and Walt Fricke
The Parade committee would like to ask as many of
our regional members who are able to continue to
register for the 54th Porsche Parade. It is a once-ina-ten
year opportunity to experience a Porsche Parade,
right here in our own backyard. This is a show
you will not want to miss. Our registration to date
has exceeded even our expectations. But there is
still room left for you to register and be a real part
of your Region’s show.
When you register for Parade 2009 online, you must
first have access to the PCA National website. Some
of you may already have access to www.pca.org
and have a password set up for its access. For those
of you who do not, please contact Vu Nguyen, PCA
Executive Director at vun@pca.org He will assist
you in gaining access to the National site, where you
will be registering for our 2009 Porsche Parade.
I highly recommend that you copy the Entrant
Schedule for the 2009 Porsche Parade from our Parade
website. It will help you during the registration process. You can find the full Parade schedule on
www.porscheparade2009.com at the Schedules tab. There you will see the four major Competitive Events,
Special Activities and Banquets plus all the corresponding dates and times for your convenient selection. The
Parade registration process will take you approximately 30 minutes. However, I will tell you that several
of the Parade events are already sold out. You will see a lock symbol next to the Parade events and tours
that have reached their limit.
The 54th Porsche Parade registration fee is $165.00, and covers basic admittance to the Parade for the entrant,
a co-entrant, and one car. The co-entrant may be an unaffiliated PCA member, but must share the
same car with an entrant. An exception applies if the registered Porsche is not legal for street use, in which
case a second Porsche may be registered for use in the TSD rally only.
Once you complete the Parade registration process, you will receive a confirmation from the registrar and
the Parade code that you will need to use in selecting your Keystone Parade lodging. Do not try to book
Parade lodging prior to Parade registration. Whether you choose a hotel or a condominium, you will need
this Parade access code to obtain the Parade rates. Check our regional Parade website for a lodging map
of the Keystone area www.porscheparade2009.com. We have more than adequate numbers of lodging
possibilities.
The above are but a few of the basics for you to think about. If you do not have Internet access, call Kathleen
Lennon, Parade Registrar, at 719-487-2842 or 719-330-1525 and request that a paper registration form
be mailed to you.
Kathleen and I hope these hints and things to think about will help you with your registration for the 2009
Parade. Walt and I will also be available to answer any of your Parade questions.
Our e-mail is katfricke@msn.com or call 303-499-6540.
Welcome to the 2009 Porsche Parade and please register. It is your ticket to a wondrous experience that
you will never forget.
Escape 2009
PCA Event- DAYTON, OHIO
Porsche Escape 2009 at the Birthplace of
Aviation is nearly ready for registration. The
Ohio Valley Region is the host this year for
the fifth Escape, another great PCA event.
The Escape is located in and around Dayton
OH, focusing on the tie-in of aviation and
cars. There will be tours of covered bridges,
colorful towns, the only Frank Lloyd Wright
house in Ohio, and of course, aviation (Escape
to the Birthplace of Aviation).
Our venues for dinners include two distinct
automotive collections, the original Dayton
Packard dealership collection of over 50 cars,
and Taj Ma Garaj a unique personal collection
of all things created by Dr. Porsche in a
wonderful eclectic facility-an event in itself!
The car display will be held at the wonderful
Carillon Park which houses the original
Wright B&n bsp;Flyer and many other historic
homes in a lovely park setting.
They have arranged exclusive behind the
scenes tours at the National Museum of the
United States Air Force in addition to allowing
plenty of time to tour the NMUSAF independently.
They have also arranged private
tours of the original (restored) home of Orville
Wright. A bit of Dayton history, tied to speed
through Porsche.
So what is Escape?
It is a shorter event than Parade without the
emphasis on competition.
It allows members to members another opportunity
to experience PCA at a broader
level. You can meet new friends from different
areas, and share the Porsche experience.
54th Annual Porsche Parade
Keystone, Colorado - June 29th to July 4th
PARADE FOR THE NON-COMPETITOR by Wendy Shoffit of the Ozark Injector
So you say you have no interest
in competing in anything
Porsche related. Maybe competition
is just not your bag,
baby. That doesn't mean you
have to avoid the Porsche Parade
altogether.
Really! Being a type-A competitor
myself, I have a hard
time imagining not feeling the
pull to be the best. However,
I know there are plenty of you
who just enjoy the ride. During
the week, there is so much
to see and do that will never
involve a box of q-tips, a rally
computer, race tires, or a
sharpened #2 pencil. It all
starts with the spectacle that
IS the concours d'elegance.
What better way to view some of the most spectacularly well kept cars, historical or
current. Imagine... you didn't have to clean even ONE of them! You just get to stroll
along for as long as you want, taking in the beauty that is Porsche.
Toss out the questions for the gimmick rally and just enjoy the journey. The rallymaster
will take you through some of the most spectacular roads in the local area. How better
to see the roads of Colorado than on a guided path, knowing you won't be lost?
Take your time, stop for lunch, and enjoy what there is to offer along the way. Friends
of mine went to Parade a few years ago and decided to have fun while being lost on
the TSD rally. Rather than stress about maxing out that leg, they bought a birdhouse
from a local wood carver. Made for one of the best rally stories I've heard!
Be a social butterfly, if you choose, at all the banquets. Enjoy the local cuisine that is
featured. Spend time at the happy hour before the dinners, enjoying just being with
the people who share your passion. You don't have to feel the need to flog them in
the autocross. Dinners are always a "No Flogging" zone. Ooooh, and the ice cream
social is always tons of fun. Enjoy your frozen treat while watching everyone else coming
off the TSD rally telling their war stories, cursing that one missed sign, while you
sit back and enjoy your stress free view.
Feeling like socializing even when it's NOT at a banquet? Well, then spend your afternoons
in the Hospitality room. Casually check your email in a computer station, find
out about the latest tire advancements from the event sponsors, or just sit back and
enjoy the free drinks and snacks. Sit there long enough and you're sure to run into a
friend or two or hundred. Sooner or later, everyone at Parade goes to Hospitality.
Don't be shocked to find a margarita party or wine tasting is going on there. Those
hospitality chairs are always full of surprises.
Everyone also seems to find himself or herself in the Goodie Store, looking for great
rmrporschenews
deals. Current Parade merchandise is there, along with PCA and Porsche stuff, as well.
The assortment is always best in the first few days, but the deals are always best
the last few. Take your pick! Add to all this, the local area tours that get set up each
year. The Charlotte Parade had a tour bus to take you to the fabulous Biltmore House.
Discount tickets AND available transportation ... how can you beat it? Don't feel like
leaving the hotel all the time? Well, check out the art show that is usually set up in
the host hotel. Our fellow PCA'ers are some amazing artists. Maybe you have a talent
you'd like to display and don't care a whip about winning a ribbon. You can even
choose to sell your work of art and contribute to a local charity. It's up to you.
The past few years' Parades have also held spectacular Porsche Historic Museum
type displays. Brush up on your history, drool a little over the offerings, and simply
enjoy being around some vehicles that you may never again get to stand next to. Take
your time, it's usually open several days during the week. Amazing cars abound. Not
only are there amazing cars around, but there have been some amazing guest speakers,
complete with autograph sessions. Vic Elford, Norbert Singer, and Kevin Buckler...
to name just a few. Have you always wanted to meet Peter Porsche? He's
attended well over 20 Parades so far and has no plans to miss them in the future.
He's always so nice and personable and not at all pretentious.
If all this sounds too structured for you, well... toss out the schedule (at times) and
branch out on your own. Take in the local sites (even if there's not a tour offered
there), shop in the local stores, and just enjoy the local flavor. Everywhere you look
you can find it. Just don't too distracted and forget to attend the final Victory Banquet.
That's when they draw for the trip to Germany. While everyone competes for
it, all it takes is one little door prize slip with your name on it and that you get included
with your meal.
So, come to Colorado. Relax with friends and enjoy ALL the spectacular views, Porsche
and not. Hope to see you there! I might just have to take a day off from competing
to smell some of the roses along the way.
FOR SALE OR 356 TRADE1967 912/911 Race Car VIN 459569
Engine #6195011 $13,500 This is an excellent opportunity to
purchase an early 912/911 race car for a fraction of the cost
to build. This car was raced 8-10 years ago in local RMVR
events. Since then a roll cage was professionally installed
along with the dry sump oil system and wiring loom. The car
has not been driven during this time by the present ownership.
The following modifications and upgrades include.
Engine – The engine presently installed is a 1969 911T, 2.0 L,
type 911/07 case, and a recent leak test down showed: #1 –
5%, #2 – 5%, #3 – 7%, #4 – 5%, #5 – 5% and #6 – 10%.
P&C along with heads were upgraded to S specs to keep it
competitive. Carrera chain tensioners were installed as were
Weber carburetors, a front oil cooler with thermostat and three
gallon oil tank, using braided oil lines, and an MSD ignition system
and a Flow Master exhaust was installed. Chassis – A professionally
built roll cage was fabricated and installed, as well
as a 15 gallon fuel cell. The floor and gas tank support pan are
not rusted. However, the rocker panels were poorly patched
on both sides. The car was recently painted light grey.
Suspension & Brakes – Weltmeister sway bars, front and rear,
a front strut tower brace and Bilstein shocks were installed.
The brake system includes new rotors, 911S calipers, front
and rear, as well as a dual circuit master cylinder, and AP brake
fluid reservoir. The car is equipped with 6” X 15” deep dish
Fuchs wheels and OLD race tires, not suitable for use. There
is also ‘T’ long block available with purchase. It was running 6
years ago, however the carburetors were removed. The sale
includes a set of early Recaro seats and the car can only be sold
with a Bill Of Sale. The car is located in Denver, Colorado and
available for inspection during business hours. Seller is interested
in trading for a solid and straight ‘54-‘58 356
