Like most of the Garrett lines, this one stems from Lord John Garrett. But unlike
others this line comes from Lord John’s first wife, Ann Dunston the mother of John
Garrett II as shown on the chart below.

The 1 st Generation
The Family of John Garrett, II (1631-1706)
John GARRETT II was born January 10, 1631 in Hosse, Leicestershire, England. He
was about 32 years old when he immigrated to Virginia (probably to claim the land
that his father had obtained when he was there with John Dunston about 30 years
earlier).
He married Nannie Harrison in about 1660 when he was about 29 years old. She
was born 1635 in England and died 1663 in England. They had two children (I
believe):
i. William GARRETT was born February 12, 1661 in Derby,
Leicestershire, England.
ii. Mary Garrett was born 1662.
He married 2nd (2) Elizabeth Ware in 1664, probably in England. She was born
February 13, 1635 in Dublin, Ireland.
Children of John GARRETT II and (2) Elizabeth Ware:
i. Thomas Garrett was born 1674 in New Kent Co., VA
and died April 2, 1734 in Cowan Co., NC.
ii. John Ware Garrett III was born 1675 in New Kent, VA and
died 1728 in Stafford, New Kent Co., VA.
iii. Nicholas Ware Garrett was born 1676 probably in VA. He
apparently never married. He may have died young.
iv. Elizabeth Garrett was born 1678 in King and Queen Co., VA
and died in about 1750 in King & Queen Co., VA.
v. Robert Garrett was born 1680 in New Kent Co., VA and died
1743 in King & Queen Co., VA.
John GARRETT, II was acquainted with the Ware’s while he lived in England.
Elizabeth Ware’s father, Peter Ware and at least a part of his family probably
immigrated first in the Plymouth Colony, but due to religious disagreement moved by
1646 to the Hampton Parish in Virginia. We find Peter Ware in Ireland in 1636
selling his property before coming to America by way of England. Some records
have all of Peter Ware’s children immigrating with him in 1646 -- if so Elizabeth
Ware would have been 12 years old. Other records report that Elizabeth Ware
“wanted to join her father and brother in Virginia” thus suggesting that she did not

immigrate in 1646 but stayed in England until she came over with John GARRETT
II in 1664.

the Garretts settled, where both John Garrett and wife, Elizabeth died.

The Family of John Ware Garrett III (1675-1728)
John Ware Garrett III was born 1675 in New Kent, VA and died 1728 in Stafford,
New Kent Co., VA. He married Frances Elizabeth Buckner in about 1703. She was
born 1680 in New Kent Co, VA and died 1739 in VA, daughter of Richard Buckner
and Elizabeth Cook.

i. Robert (1) Garrett was born 1701 in VA.
ii. Joseph Garrett, Sr. was born 1704 in VA.
iii. Robert (2) Garrett was born 1705 in Caroline Co, VA or
Edgefield SC and died in between 1781 and 1783.
iv. John Garrett IV was born 1707 in South Carolina and died
1784 in Abbeville Co. South Carolina..
v. (1) Edward T. Garrett was born 1708 in Stafford Co. VA. and
died December 20, 1751 in Loudon Co, VA.
vi. NIcholas Garrett was born 1710.
vii. Thomas Garrett was born 1712.

The Family of Edward T. Garrett (1708-1751)
Edward T. Garrett was born 1708 in Stafford Co. VA. and died December 20, 1751
in Loudon Co, VA. He married Elizabeth Catlett 1730 in Stafford Co. VA. She was
born between 1708 and 1714 in Stafford Co. VA. and died August 27, 1763 in VA.
Children of Edward T. Garrett and Elizabeth Catlett:
i. Silas Garrett was born 1730 in VA.
ii. Edward Garrett, II was born August 31, 1733 in New Kent,
VA and died August 24, 1794 in buried in Warrior Creek,
Laurens Co, SC.
iii. Margaret Garrett was born June 4, 1735.
iv. Jesse Garrett was born in about 1735 in , , Somersetshire,
England.
v. Frances Garrett was born July 30, 1737.
vi. Stephen Garrett was born August 1, 1740.

Military : Revolutionary War
Burial : 1794 in Warrior Creek Cemetery, SC
Moved : 1766 in Warrior Creek, waters of Enorce River
Land Purchase : 1770 in 500 acre grant in SC (Warrior Creek)
Edward Garrett, Sr. moved from VA to SC before Revolutionary War. Settled on
Warrior Creek. He often led the settlers in their campaign against the Indians who
"infested" the country. He, his son John and Grandson Thomas are buried in Warrior
Creek Cemetery.
Took charge when father died and kept "Daily Book" which was later carried on by
daughter-in-law Ann Ousley.

Edward and Ann Owsley ended up in Laurens South Carolina where they apparently
had a cotton plantation and numerous slaves. According to records in Laurens,
Edward fathered numerous children with his slaves in addition to having 18 children
with his wife. She (Ann) was only 14 when she married Edward, gave birth to the
first child at 15 and in 27 years she had all 18.
In 1776, Edward Garrett moved his family to the ninety-sixth District of South
Carolina, the area in which they settled became Laurens County in 1785. There, in
1767, he received a grant of land and in 1770, a second grant located on Warrior
Creek. Although Edward Garrett did not serve in the Military during the Revolutionary
War, he provided patriotic service in contributing supplies to the army in South
Carolina. Edward and Ann Garrett were members of the Upper Durbins Creek Baptist
Church. With the establishment of the Warrior Creek Baptist Church in 1806, Ann
Garrett and her children, by a deed dated 24 Oct. 1806, contributed the one acre of
land on which the meeting house stood. The day before his death, Edward Garrett
made known his wishes relating to the disposition of his estate. This verbal will was
filed in Lauren's County on 27 August 1794.

The Family of Hosea Moses Garrett (1782-1827)
Moses Hosea Garrett was born October 18, 1782 in Laurens Co, SC and died
December 1, 1827 in Bedford Co., TN. He married 1st (1) Sallie Harris in about
1798 in Warrior Creek, SC. She was born 1782 in Buncombe, NC and died in about
1815. He married 2nd (2) Frances Harris 1816 in Laurens Co, SC. She was born
1794 in NC and died in Smith, TX.
